The rail is out 4.5 metres the entire course, which usually favours the leading horses early and then the backmarkers can win late in the day. Rain and thunderstorms are predicted for the weekend but Doomben is a good drying track, so it should be safe to bet.
This is yet another example of betting blind because most of the field are having their first starts and haven't trialled. How that encourages betting is anyone's guess.
But we do know SHE'S SPICY is pretty smart and she was scratched last week for this race. The stable is noted for first-up two-year-old winners. Jeff Lloyd could have ridden three horses in this race and chose her.
SAXTON ROCK is one of the horses he knocked back and who could blame him on his first run, but the colt is much better than that effort and he did trial well before his first-up effort.
EVERYDAY LADY has not had a trial but is also from a noted two-year-old stable. Again we are told she went well in a recent jump out.
SERIOUS DOUBTS is well bred and has trialled well enough to be a chance here.
REDWISKA is from a stable which usually runs its first starters in Toowoomba unless they can gallop, so keep very safe. It is yet another with no official trial but we are told went okay in a jump out.
SELECTIONS: NO 9 SHE'S SPICY, NO 4 SAXTON ROCK, NO 7 EVERYDAY LADY, NO 8 SERIOUS DOUBTS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 REDWISKA.
R2 1.03pm BRONCOS GAME DAY HOSPITALITY BENCHMARK 80 HANDICAP 1050m
ANOTHER WHISKEY was very good first-up from a bad barrier and is much better drawn here. He has a 2kgs claim and does not look badly off against most of these at the weights. His second-up form is very good.
DAME DESTINY raced very well last campaign and she is well drawn for her comeback run. She does race well fresh and she wasn't asked to do much when fourth in a recent trial.
OUTBACK SAGA had very good restricted class form in central Queensland before finishing unplaced in that area's premier winter races.
STELLARCRAFT was a very strong winner first-up and has barrier (1) here. This isn't beyond him.
NATURAL DANCER has been racing in north Queensland and going well. On her old form this area, she is a chance at good odds.
SELECTIONS: NO 2 ANOTHER WHISKEY, NO 4 DAME DESTINY, NO 7 OUTBACK SAGA, NO 13 STELLARCRAFT.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 12 NATURAL DANCER.
R3 1.38pm NATIONAL STORAGE QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD HANDICAP 1350m
Probably the weakest three-year-old we have had in Brisbane for some time.
VICTORY STREET did the right thing by us first-up in a maiden at Eagle Farm. This is a big step up in class but bred to run a strong 1350m and there is a wrap on her.
RULER'S PRIDE has been in fine form in easier races, winning his past two starts. Has a lot of early pace and should be handy for a long way from the inside barrier.
ANNAMOSSITY was a good winner two starts back and then no luck last start.
LIPSTICK LOVER is badly drawn but not without hope on her last-start win in maiden company.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 BEAUDACIOUS, NO 10 VICTORY STREET, NO 2 RULER'S PRIDE, NO 4 NO ANNAMOSSITY.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 9 LIPSTICK LOVER.
R4 2.17pm CONSTRUCTION SKILLS QUEENSLAND BENCHMARK 75 HANDICAP 2200m
We never thought we would see the day we made a special in one of these Brisbane staying races but FLITERO (NEXT BEST BET) does look very hard to beat. He is a last-start Rosehill winner at 2000m and his previous start was a good third at Randwick. At one try at 2200m he was a good third. Most of these will never see the highway to Sydney let alone the big smoke race-tracks. He is a stayer on the up and will just need a touch of luck from the tricky barrier to be in the finish. Jockey Robbie Fradd is a noted staying jockey so it does look a good race to bet on.
SELECTIONS: NO 4 FLITERO, NO 11 SHE'S A RUBY, NO 2 WAR BABY, NO 10 JUST KEEP GIVING.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 14 MONT DE LOIR.
R5 2.53pm ONE KEY RESOURCES & FIRCROFT PNG CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1630m
L'ENTRECOTE (BEST BET) has won six races but he should have won a lot more. His career has been littered with hard luck stories. In fact, he has got an unfair reputation as a non-winner. He has finally drawn a good barrier and while he has plenty of weight, he has a top jockey. He has had two runs back from a spell and finished them both off very well. If he is ever going to win another race, this should be it.
SELECTIONS: NO 1 L'ENTRECOTE, NO 4 BENTLES, NO 8 COURT'S STAR, NO 7 BELFLYER.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 9 EXTRASAY.
R6 3.32pm NATIONAL STORAGE LOCKER ROOM CLASS 3 PLATE 1350m
BE THE MAGIC is relatively lightly raced and showing plenty of ability. Was a good run last start at 1200m but much better placed here at this trip. Has 2kgs off his back here and perfectly drawn for his racing style. He is at very big odds and while far from the good thing category he does look "overs".
RENESMEE is showing a lot of ability and is nicely placed in a race like this. Has a light weight and an inside barrier.
SHOTACROSS THE BOW has always shown potential and has won twice first-up.
CORNROW was once rated a top flight prospect but has had many problems. However, a very good effort last start and this is no harder.
BACHELOR HEIR was good at first run this area and has strong enough NSW provincial form to give this a shake. He is from a noted big betting stable, so watch the market closely.
SELECTIONS: NO 1 BE THE MAGIC, NO 14 RENESMEE, NO 7 SHOTACROSS THE BOW, NO 12 CORNROW.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 8 BACHELOR HEIR.
R7 4.12pm ONE KEY RESOURCES MINING OPEN HANDICAP 1350m
A very tough race with a couple of extra smart horses resuming and a few in-form horses to boot.
LORDAG has a touch of class and can race well fresh. He has a big finish and there should be plenty of early pace in this. Lordag has won first-up and has the minimum weight.
RUDY is a Group winning horse who has always raced well fresh. He has a big weight here but a top jockey. The best chance would be in the wet as he is an out and out swimmer.
JOPA loves Doomben and loves the 1350m. He isn't badly treated at the weights with the claim and he is ideally drawn for his racing style.
HARADA BAY can be hard to catch but the stable is in form and suited here from his good barrier draw. He also goes well fresh.
COL ‘N’ LIL probably wants further but did race well first-up with no luck. She has a claim and could spring a surprise here.
SELECTIONS: NO 11 LORDAG, NO 1 RUDY, NO 4 JOPA, NO 9 HARADA BAY.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 13 COL ‘N’ LIL.
R8 4.50pm BRONCOS SUPERSTORE NO MORE THAN TWO METRO WINS HANDICAP 1200m
PERFECT DARE is also engaged in Sydney but at the time of writing was going to run here. Any major rain and he won't start but all being equal he will be very hard to beat here. Had good form against much better horses during the winter.
CYLINDER BEACH is the class runner and has won at stakes level and been placed at Group Two. Has plenty of weight but can race well fresh and on class alone will be in the finish. He seems to be at silly odds in early markets and should start shorter.
URBAN KNIGHT can be hard to catch but he was a good winner last start at the Sunshine Coast and he was entered for the open handicap today, which is an indication he is going well.
ZAHA’S ACE goes well this track and distance although might be better at 1300m-1350m. Has solid claims.
MY LITTLE FLICKA (BEST ROUGHIE) should be a lot fitter for recent racing and on her day could cause an upset with a light weight.
SELECTIONS: NO 7 PERFECT DARE, NO 1 CYLINDER BEACH, NO 2 URBAN KNIGHT, NO 5 ZAHA’S ACE.
VALUE RUNNER: No 9 MY LITTLE FLICKA.
