All recent Eagle Farm meetings have been tough but this one looks as difficult as any with big fields and plenty of chances. The rail is in the true position and the track is rated good, but again there is a forecast for storms, so remember Eagle Farm goes from dry to very wet quickly these days.
R1 12.50pm BOB GREGG 60TH BIRTHDAY OPEN HANDICAP 2200m
We know it is stretching the friendship to make a special two weeks in a row in a Brisbane staying race but EMERALD CITY (BEST BET) does look the best bet of the day by a long way. He is going for four wins in a row and the stable says they have never seen him so keen. He has a 3kgs claim, which means he is in with only 2kgs over the limit. The rest of this field are either country horses or restricted class. Emerald City has a rating which is eleven points higher than his nearest rival. The only slight doubt is that he has been racing for a good while this campaign.
SELECTIONS: NO 1 EMERALD CITY, NO 3 KAISER FRANZ, NO 5 METEOROLOGIST, NO 4 POP 'N' SCOTCH.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 KAISER FRANZ.
R2 1.27pm GOLDEN FINCH LAWNS QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD HANDICAP 1000m
Again a case of betting blind in these two-year-old races, with a stack of first starters who haven't trialled officially.
CATALINA MISS showed a lot of pace and was run down right on the line by a smart horse last start.
HEY DORIS was good her only start when second at the Sunshine Coast after getting caught in the wrong part of the track.
YOU MAKE ME SMILE is very well bred and the stable has a huge amount of success with the owner's two-year-olds. Naturally no official trial but has had a jump out.
PINS FOR ARROWS has won a trial at the Gold Coast and looked good doing it. Deserves plenty of respect.
SELECTIONS: NO 5 CATALINA MISS, NO 7 HEY DORIS, NO 4 YOU MAKE ME SMILE.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 10 PINS FOR ARROWS.
R3 2.02pm LUCRF SUPER SUPPORTS JOCKEYS QTIS 3Y0 COLTS AND GELDINGS HANDICAP 1000m
STARCOURT is a maiden but having only his third start here. A $300,000 buy as a yearling, he was very impressive when a first-up second at Doomben two weeks ago. He had won a trial before that and he is ideally drawn here.
SUNDANCE is a class act who has had a few problems but lived up to his recent trials with a good first-up win. Hard to beat again from the inside barrier.
SIR DONALD never looked like getting beaten at Ipswich last start and deserves a chance in town.
ANOTHER SLIPPER is back in the right sort of race and with a jockey who can get him going early.
ALASSAK had no luck at all last start and is much better than that failure.
SELECTIONS: NO 11 STARCOURT, NO 1 SUNDANCE, NO 4 SIR DONALD, NO 7 ANOTHER SLIPPER.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 5 ALASSAK.
TIYATROLANI did everything wrong last start and was well beaten at her comeback run. But she is far better than that and there has been a jockey change to Jim Byrne. He can get his horses to jump and run, which is needed here.
NICCONI LEGGERA is about as honest as they come. She is starting to get up in the weights but you can be sure she will run a good race.
ICE FROST has been most impressive, winning her only two starts in easier races. But she has a chance here as the stable doesn't think she is far inferior to Thunder Raider, who has won two of these races recently.
TWO SHOES always goes well fresh and will be value.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 TIYATROLANI, NO 1 NICCONI LEGGERA, NO 7 ICE FROST, NO 5 TWO SHOES.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 5 TWO SHOES.
R5 3.13pm NATIONAL JOCKEYS TRUST TWO METRO WINS HANDICAP 1200m
BROOKLYN STORM was very good from a terrible barrier last start. He drops in weight and is much better served at the barriers here. He wasn't far from good Sydney mare Nieta at his previous start.
PERFECT DARE raced well against stakes horses last campaign and he didn't have much luck when resuming in Sydney. This race suits from a good barrier draw.
IN HIS STRIDE was also good at his last start on this track. He has always shown a lot of ability and this could be his campaign.
SHEISWHATSHEIS is another who has always been highly rated although she has not always delivered. Much better run last start gives her a hope here.
Be very careful of the resuming stayer OUTRAGED who won the Townsville Cup at his last start in July. He can sprint well fresh.
SELECTIONS: NO 6 BROOKLYN STORM, NO 5 PERFECT DARE, NO 7 IN HIS STRIDE, NO 10 SHEISWHATSHEIS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 1 OUTRAGED.
R6 3.48pm DALTON CONSULTING ENGINEERS CLASS 3 PLATE 1200m
The funny thing is these races, which are basically midweek class, have turned out to be very competitive and good betting races.
MY GIRL HAYLEY showed us what she could do with an all-the-way-win last time. Not harshly weighted again and she was once talked about as a Golden Slipper horse. She has the pace to overcome the bad barrier.
DESERT MAN was extremely unlucky when second first-up and then raced flat last time when well beaten. Forgive that run and he is a top chance at the weights.
CORNROW was once rated as a top flight horse of the future but has had problems. He was very well backed in a race which was washed out last week. Where there is money it has to be respected.
SHOTACROSS THE BOW is yet another who has had a wrap on him. He does race well fresh and might finally be ready to live up to his reputation instead of his racetrack failures.
FIERY HEIGHTS has trialled well and no luck first-up.
SELECTIONS: NO 16 MY GIRL HAYLEY, NO 15 DESERT MAN, NO 14 CORNROW, NO 8 SHOTACROSS THE BOW.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 FIERY HEIGHTS.
R7 4.28pm UBET KEITH NOUD QUALITY HANDICAP 1200m
The first of the summer stakes races and not a very strong affair at all. It means Sydney visitor COOLRING (NEXT BEST BET) is very hard to beat. He was a good fourth behind a top flight horse in Sydney at his second run back from a spell. Coolring has won in Queensland in much better company than this. He is drawn off the track but there is a stack of pace and a number of natural leaders in this race so he should get cover. He looks too good for these.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 COOLRING, NO 1 DIDNTCOSTALOT, NO 8 TOO GOOD TO REFUSE, NO 4 FLAMBOYER.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 10 ANOTHER WHISKEY.
R8 5.08pm HEINRICH RACING CLASS 6 PLATE 1400m
Interesting that top jockey Jeff Lloyd has elected to ride MAN OF HIS WORD in this. The gelding has been crying out for 1400m but he does get a long way back in his races. If he is within striking distance at the 200m he can finish very hard.
COL ‘N’ LIL was good first-up and was scratched from an open handicap on Wednesday for this.
BETTER LAND got too far back last start when second and should be closer on the corner here.
HEART OF A WARRIOR was also scratched from Wednesday's open for this. He does race well fresh.
BRETTAN hasn't run since July when he raced in far stronger races than this. He can go well fresh so respect here.
SELECTIONS: NO 13 MAN OF HIS WORD, NO 15 COL ‘N’ LIL, NO 9 BETTER LAND, NO 5 HEART OF A WARRIOR.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 10 BRETTAN.
R9 5.48pm GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB BENCHMARK 85 HANDICAP 1600m
A lot of these horses were in the same race last time and had no luck. The race will probably be won by luck again.
LORD COCONUTS was one of the unluckiest last time and just needs some breaks here to be in the finish.
PRIVLAKA also had little luck last start at first try at 1600m. He should be hard to beat from the good barrier in this monster field.
EMPHASIS stays down in the weights despite two wins this distance. But he has a terrible barrier draw here and will want luck.
L'ENTRECOTE finally got some luck last start and won well. But he does have a bad barrier again this time. If he has luck he can win.
BLUE LION (BEST ROUGHIE) is nearly old enough to vote but he did trial well before two fair runs back from a spell. He has a 3kgs claim here and 1600m is his best distance. He will be very big odds in this very hard race.
