Heat wave conditions are predicted for Brisbane on Saturday and that also means thunderstorms, so keep a close watch on the weather. The rail is out five metres, which has meant in recent months that horses coming from back in the field are suited. Really, though, with this new track you are better waiting to see how it plays before having a big bet.
BEST BET: RACE 5, NO 1 WINNING RUPERT.
NEXT BEST BET: RACE 6, NO 5 MAN OF HIS WORD.
BEST ROUGHIE: RACE 9, NO 4 RIVER RACER.
R1 12.27pm QIMR BERGHOFER MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OPEN HANDICAP 2200m
This does look a quinella race between EMERALD CITY and ANTON EN AVANT.
EMERALD CITY is going for five straight wins and has a 2kgs claim here, meaning he is very well weighted. But ANTON EN AVANT has a good record this track and distance and gets 2kgs off the top weight. The only problem is they both need early pace in their races.
There is no natural leader, although ALL CLEAR might go to the front.
POP ‘N’ SCOTCH ran well last time when trapped deep for a long way but is another who needs pace.
SELECTIONS: NO 1 EMERALD CITY, NO 2 ANTON EN AVANT, NO 3 ALL CLEAR, NO 5 POP ‘N’ SCOTCH.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 ALL CLEAR.
R2 1.02pm NATURALLY AUSTRALIAN MEAT & GAME QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD PLATE 1000m
I AM VENUS could not have been more impressive in winning her only start. She came from the extreme outside barrier and blew the field away.
CLAIRVUE looked like the run would do him the world of good when a first-up second.
DREAM KISSES was a very strong winner at her second start after having no luck first try.
JABROOK is well bred and related to some smart horses. No trial but has had a jump out where he went well.
GWAPO won a trial at the Gold Coast recently in handy fashion. To be honest, it is often hard to line up form out of the Gold Coast trials but his effort was good.
SELECTIONS: NO 9 I AM VENUS, NO 2 CLAIRVUE, NO 8 DREAM KISSES, NO 11 JABROOK.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 6 GWAPO.
R3 1.37pm DEAN WEBB MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 80 HANDICAP 1825m
Once upon a time to back anything starting from outside barrier (5) at this start was like setting fire to your money, but for some reason on the new track it isn't such a worry.
SPEED GONZALES was strong at the finish behind a good horse when second at Doomben and probably should have nearly won. He has won at 1800m.
THE GREY FLASH landed a good betting move at the Sunshine Coast and then was a bit flat last start at Doomben. This distance should suit.
BLUE LION had no luck last start this track and not harshly treated with a 3kgs claim.
HUDSON COUNTY has been racing well since coming to this area and could get a soft lead here.
SELECTIONS: NO 9 SPEED GONZALES, NO 11 THE GREY FLASH, NO 1 BLUE LION, NO 3 HUDSON COUNTY.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 HUDSON COUNTY.
R4 2.13pm DON ALROE & SONS BENCHMARK 80 HANDICAP 1825m
This is by far the harder of the two heats of this race.
SAGA MISS has been in a purple patch of form and will appreciate the rock hard track. Provided the pace is true early, she will be storming home.
EMPHASIS won two races in good fashion before spending most of his time in the car park last start. Much better drawn here.
SAHARA SIREN is very promising and will relish getting out to 1800m. Any rain would be a huge bonus.
LORD COCONUTS another who is racing consistently. He will appreciate the 2kgs claim here.
SELECTIONS: NO 6 SAGA MISS, NO 4 EMPHASIS, NO 10 SAHARA SIREN, NO 2 LORD COCONUTS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 10 SAHARA SIREN.
R5 2.48pm MCINNES WILSON LAWYERS QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD COLTS AND GELDINGS PLATE 1200m
WINNING RUPERT (BEST BET) does look very hard to beat in this. He has won his only two starts, including a Group Two race during the winter carnival. It means he gets in very well at the weights. He has had three trials leading into this race and is chasing a big bonus for winning all legs of the summer triple three-year-old crown. He is also perfectly drawn for this type of race as he should be able to sit off the pace with cover.
SELECTIONS: NO 1 WINNING RUPERT, NO 5 BELOSO, NO 2 SUNDANCE, NO 9 CRAZY POPS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 9 CRAZY POPS.
R6 3.28pm WALKING ON SUNSHINE FOUNDATION CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1500m
MAN OF HIS WORD (NEXT BEST BET) appears to have been crying out for 1500m or 1600m. It is not always the case that horses who finish hard in shorter races are suited when they get out to 1500m-1600m, but he has been charging home at the end of his races. There is no doubt he should have won last start when a nose second over 1400m. There does appear to be pace in this race and it should be truly run. All that means is he will be very hard to beat.
SELECTIONS: NO 5 MAN OF HIS WORD, NO 8 BECKONING LIGHT, NO 13 DEITCH, NO 1 HEART OF A WARRIOR.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 13 DEITCH.
R7 4.08pm STANTON CLASS 3 PLATE 1200m
Another case of these Class 3 races being very strong.
EL GRECO had good older form in Melbourne where he was stakes placed twice. He also won in handy company there. He is now trained in Toowoomba but won a jump out in very good fashion recently.
PERFECT DARE is another who has been placed in stakes company and is thrown in here under Plate weight conditions.
MY GIRL HAYLEY has a light weight and should lead again here. She will be fitter for recent racing.
DESERT MAN is another who is fitter for recent racing and is well drawn here.
CASHING UP has always shown ability and he could sprint well fresh as he is a first-up winner in previous campaigns.
SELECTIONS: NO 10 EL GRECO, NO 6 PERFECT DARE, NO 15 MY GIRL HAYLEY, NO 14 DESERT MAN.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 3 CASHING UP.
R8 4.48pm IPG CONNECT GEORGE MOORE STAKES 1200m
TOO GOOD TO REFUSE has been brilliant his two runs back from a spell. He remains on the minimum so he is hard to beat again.
THAT’S A GOOD IDEA has been around the money in Sydney without placing. He has had a recent trial where she went with Group One winner Rebel Dane. This type of race is his go these days.
BIG MONEY raced well in a Gosford trial and is down in class against this field.
COOLRING was ordinary last start but better on a dry track and will also be fitter.
HARD STRIDE should have finished closer last start and is another suited here.
SELECTIONS: NO 8 TOO GOOD TO REFUSE, NO 2 THAT’S A GOOD IDEA, NO 1 BIG MONEY, NO 5 COOLRING.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 6 HARD STRIDE.
R9 5.24pm PEAK SPORTS AND SPINE CENTRE MODE PLATE 1200m
Some very promising three-year-old fillies in this race.
NICCONI LEGGERA has finally drawn a good barrier. There is a slight doubt about her at 1200m but the inside marble should negate that. She is very honest.
TIYATROLANI returned to her best last start and she will be in this race for a long way. Another ideally drawn for her racing style.
RIVER RACER (BEST ROUGHIE) turned in one of the runs of the day when coming from last to be second at latest effort. She is always good odds and looks the best roughie of the day.
SUSPENDERS won twice in Sydney before running into a potential superstar at her last start. She was third in a recent trial when not asked to do much.
SELECTIONS: NO 3 NICCONI LEGGERA, NO 6 TIYATROLANI, NO 4 RIVER RACER, NO 7 SUSPENDERS.
VALUE RUNNER: NO 4 RIVER RACER.
