Leading trainer Darren Weir is on a high having won the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic at Ascot with Stratum Star last Saturday.

The affable trainer unleashes a strong team of local and imported gallopers on this midweek Sandown meeting and he should be followed closely.

He uses the services of leading apprentice Ben Allen to reduce the handicaps of some of his talented runners and their combination could reap plenty of reward.

The rail is at 12 metres and the track is rated a Good 4 on a fine day, so racing should be competitive.

R1 - 1.30pm. The Cove Hotel Handicap - 1400m

AMERICAN RUSH is a lightly raced filly with a win and a second at three starts. Broke her maiden status over 1300m at Seymore last start as a well-backed $3.60 favourite. Michael Dee’s 1.5kg claim helps lower her impost to 58kg – a 3kg increase on last time.

I’LL DECIDE is going to find this a hell of a lot easier than at her Victorian debut when finishing a close seventh over 1400m at Sandown on November 12. Ben Allen’s 2kg claim helps her handicap, lowering it to 57.5kg against her own sex.

INVICTUM DOMINA was an alarming drifter in the betting from $9.50 to $18 before finishing a close third over 1300m here on November 23. Apprentice Dylan Dunn’s 1.5kg claim reduces her handicap to 58kg.

ZOLANI was having her third start and her first unplaced run when finishing sixth over 1500m at Moonee Valley on November 18. Apprentice Regan Bayliss’s 1.5kg claim sees her carry 58kg and she can redeem.

R2 - 2.00pm. Argyle Maintenance Plate - 1300m

FAST TYCOON has had his hoof on the till and can break through here. Latest ran a close second over 1200m against his own age at Moonee Valley on November 18. Senior jockey Luke Nolen replaces apprentice Regan Bayliss.

MISTY SEA is from the stables of trainer Darren Weir and was strongly backed into a $2.60 favourite before finishing third over 1200m in a maiden at Kyneton on November 18. Bound to be improved and rates highly.

ZARTINI (BEST ROUGHIE) is having only his fourth starts and showed rapid improvement first up when finishing a close fifth over 1200m in a maiden at Pakenham on November 17. Expect further improvement here.

SMOOTH WHISKEY has the blinkers going on and would expect improvement on latest close fifth over 1411m in a maiden at Sale on November 11. Jake Noonan replaces Daniel Moor and respect.

R3 - 2.30pm. Hyland Race Colours Plate - 1400m

CAPTAIN ARABIA made an auspicious debut when flying into third place over 1200m maiden at Moonee Valley on November 18. Sydney jockey Blake Shinn rode that day and he gets top Melbourne hoop Dwayne Dunn to steer here.

DOMESTICATED was outgunned by a smart winner at her debut but gave a good effort to run third over 1100m against her own sex at Seymore on November 19. She did enough that day to warrant here on 55kg.

ASTLEY was hampered badly when clogged up in traffic when finishing seventh over a 1400m maiden at Pakenham on November 17. Ace jockey Craig Williams sticks here and is worth following.

RUN FOR RAFFIN was at the odds of $81 but flew home to claim second place first up over 1200m in a handicap at Pakenham on November 10. Down in class here and if he can repeat the effort he must have claims.

R4 - 3.00pm. Quayclean Handicap - 2400m

PRESUMPTION is racing well and battled hard to finish fifth over 2050m at Wodonga on November 25. Before that he won over 2500m in a maiden and gets regular hoop Noel Callow back after Steven King deputised last time.

MY GYPSY JANE is only having her fourth career start so plenty of upside. She gave a sound effort to run third over 2025m at Cranbourne on November 4. Leading apprentice Ben Allen’s 2kg claim sees her carry 55kg here.

PRESTBURY PARK was stepped up to 2200m last start and battled on steadily to finish seventh at Bendigo on November 24. Dean Holland keeps the ride and drops a half kilo to 58.5kg here. He is doing enough.

MIGHTY MAHER is rock solid now and has a riding change, with Dwayne Dunn replacing Brad Rawiller. He ran a sound third over 2100m here at his last start on November 16 and will carry the same weight on 57kg here.

PLEIN CIEL (BEST BET) is a German import who was super impressive at his Australian debut for leading trainer Darren Weir when storming home to land a 1 /14 length win in a 1300m maiden at Warrnambool on November 17. Apprentice Ben Allen gets the nod here and he will carry 58kg with Allen’s 2kg allowance. He was a drifter at his debut from $2.20 to $3.70, but expect him to be firm here on a bigger track and with that explosive run under his belt.

LASAYETTE was a brilliant 3 ¼ length winner second up over 1100m at Warrnambool on November 17. Was steady throughout in the betting at $3.60 and expect her to be firm here in the betting with the barrier gates the key to this race. Many of the fancies have drawn wide. She jumps from (9).

NEW SUMMER NIGHT is expected to improve sharply on her first-up third over 1100m at Seymore on November 19. She gets a riding change, with Dylan Dunn replacing Cory Parish and Dunn’s 1.5kg claim sees her carry 56.5kg here from a perfect draw in (1).

RELAUNCH has been kept fresh and expect a bold showing on her last start dominant three-length win over 1200m at Pakenham on October 17. She gets the services of top jockey Craig Williams here and drops two kilos on her last start to 57.5kg.

ECOLOGY ran a solid fourth over 1300m off a 25-day break against her own sex at Cranbourne on November 25. She gets the services of top jockey Dwayne Dunn to help her here and she rarely runs a bad race so give her thought.

BIG DUKE (NEXT BEST BET) is a lightly raced import who can take a big step forward here on Australian debut when finishing a solid fourth over 1500m at Bendigo on November 24. He gets a riding change here, with leading trainer Darren Weir employing 2kg claimer Ben Allen to drop his weight to 57kg. He has drawn perfectly on the rail to gain a soft run throughout and he appears the strongest chance of the stable’s three runners – On Wings and My Sanctuary - in this race.

MOUNT OMEI is from the leading Sydney stables of Chris Waller and this is her fourth start back. She was the $2.50 favourite and gave a solid effort when running second over 2040m against her own sex at Moonee Valley on November 11. Good chance.

CONCUBINE carried 57kg with the claim of apprentice Dylan Dunn when running third over 1800m here on November 23. She gets top jockey Craig Williams to steer here and she only carries a half kilo more weight on 57.5kg.

SWEET MELODY can burst back into the winners’ list here. She gets the 2kg claim of apprentice Ben Allen to reduce her weight to 55.5kg, which is 2kg less than she carried when running second over 1800m here on November 23 in this class.

VANDANCER won first up and struck a smart type in Hell Or High Water when finishing ninth over 1600m in a mares’ race at Moonee Valley on November 26. Jordan Child’s 1.5kg claim reduces her impost to 59kg and rates as a chance.
