Canterbury Betting Preview | Horse Racing Tips

Canterbury for the final meeting of 2016 and we have an intriguing card, a few horses engaged throughout are either on their way to the Magic Millions in two weeks or trying to get their rating up to make the fields.

Fri, 30 Dec, 3:21 AM
The new weight scale has made the card even trickier with the bigger spread of weights. The rail is in the true position and the track will be good, with hot weather in the lead-up. QUADDIES (Races 6-7-8-9)

GENETEAU Super effort last start when run down late by Candala in the Inglis sprint. She was probably found out a touch late second-up on a heavy track. Third up here she should be ready to peak and Avdulla on board only adds confidence.

WEATHERLY Resumes here on the back of two imposing trials and a big reputation to live up too. Last prep he was talked up as one of the best 2yo colts in the land and had a few setbacks along the way. First-up from a wide gate with a big weight, he will have to bring his best to win.

SUPER TOO Was scratched at the gate when a short price favourite in the Inglis sprint, I am not a fan of backing horses off setbacks and she has to carry a big weight here. But if she brings that Spright form, she’s hard to beat.

MAGNETAR Made a wide sweeping run in that Inglis race last start and was not disgraced. Blinkers on from barrier 2, I expect him to be much more prominent in the run now.

SELECTIONS: No 5 GENETEAU, No 1 Weatherly, No 2 Super Too, No 4 Magnetar

VALUE RUNNER: No 6 Geneteau

No 1 MISS WONDERLAND (Best Bet) Produced a monster effort first up at Flemington when facing the breeze with a big weight. She may well have been $1.50 that day, but the win was something only good horses would do. She comes to Sydney for the first time here and brings Spright form which is more than good enough for this. She is one on her way to the Magic Millions.

ATOM EVE Resumes here after a good second prep, where although she didn’t find the winners circle she ran full of merit. First-up over 1250m here is a worry, but her form over her first two preps is more than good enough for this.

FREE STANDING Has done a good job winning his last two. The win at Randwick was in a good race for Highway level and I’m happy to follow that race going forward. From gate 8 Ford will have to make a decision early on and that will dictate his chances.

HESCO GOLD Has been quite good at his past two runs, filling up the runners-up stall. The placing in the Highway two back was quite good. From barrier 1 and with only 52kgs he will have to do no work in the run and gets every chance.

TIGER BY THE TALE The Danny Williams stable are starting to fire and I’m happy to throw this mare in off her last two runs. Back on good going and up to 1250m suit perfectly here.

SELECTIONS: No 2 ATOM EVE, No 3 Free Standing, No 8 Hesco Gold, No 11 Tiger By The Tale

VALUE RUNNER: No 11 Tiger By The Tale

R5 – 3:05PM #THERACES HANDICAP - 1900m

BURNING ENERGY Has been in great form this time in with a big win at Mudgee two starts ago and then a tough effort last week at Warwick Farm. The step up to 1900m and Saturday grade suit well and he is bringing the other form to the race here.

RUSTIC MELODY Was good enough first-up over 1550m. I like the quick jump up to the 1900m here as it looks as if it will suit. Avdulla stays on and back on dry ground gives her a chance.

UNBIASED Was bogged down last start by the wet track. He just couldn’t quicken when he really needed to and that cost him. Back on dry going here, he will be thereabouts.

LIAPARI Comes back off a setback and has had a trial since. I liked the trial as it showed that he was back and in good form. He is a winner at the track in the past and he needs to be given a hope.

SELECTIONS: No 4 BURNING ENERGY, No 1 Rustic Melody, No 3 Unbiased, No 6 Liapari

VALUE RUNNER: No 4 Burning Energy

HETTY HEIGHTS Like the jump up to 1550m here after two runs back this time in. There doesn’t look to be a lot of speed here so it shouldn’t be the toughest 1550m out there. She has sprinted well both runs this time in and with the big weight drop she gets a chance to win.

GOLD AMBITION On the quick backup and big weight drop looks set to peak here. He may be looking for a touch further than this after three runs this time in. But down to 51kgs he needs to be given a chance.

DUCA VALENTINOIS Got bogged down on the wet track last start. He drops massively in grade here from a Villiers to what is a benchmark 92. He is a winner at Canterbury in the past and with Shinn on, he will have every conceivable chance.

BERRY DELICIOUS Is probably due to bob up and win a race at huge odds soon and this may be it on a hard track. They may well crawl here which will suit the big turn of foot that she has. If she gets a crack at them, she may well blow them away.

SELECTIONS: No 10 HETTY HEIGHTS, No 9 Gold Ambition, No 6 Duca Valentinois, No 2 Berry Delicious

VALUE RUNNER: No 9 Gold Ambition

FLIPPANT Comes off a dominant last-start win in which the form has held up quite well so far. The trial between runs was good and the freshen is because she is on her way to the Magic Millions. From gate 16 she will have to go back and have the last shot at them.

HIS MAJESTY Just lacked match practice first-up when he loomed up to them. Second-up here and on harder going he may well explode and show them a clean pair of heels.

BALL OF MUSCLE Comes out of the best race leading up to this, The G2 on Derby day which had Illustrious Lad and Southern Legend involved. The trial since was good enough for this. With the Pride stable currently flying you need to have him in all bets.

WEATHERLY Resumes here on the back of two imposing trials and a big reputation to live up too. Last prep he was talked up as one of the best 2yo colts in the land and had a few setbacks along the way. I hope he gets a run as he looks better suited here than earlier in the day.

SELECTIONS: No 6 FLIPPANT, No 9 His Majesty, No 1 Ball Of Muscle, No 17 Weatherly

VALUE RUNNER: No 6 Flippant

R8 – 5:00PM TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP - 1200m

MEDITERRANEAN Looks ready and primed for a big first-up run here after being gelded after his last prep. The trial leading in was ultra- impressive. He is on his way to the Magic Millions to tackle the Guineas. If he brings his best he could blow this lot away.

NICCOLANCE Forget his last run where he played up behind the gates and should have been scratched. That race regardless was quite hot and his two wins before that were ultra-dominant. He is another on his way to the Magic Millions and needs to put his best forward.

DEPLOY Came back with a vengeance first-up with a dominant win. The step up to Saturday grade here will not faze him, as he has always had the ability to be a more than handy horse.

DISGRACEFUL Has a good first-up record and has trialLed pleasingly coming into this run. There looks to be good speed on paper and if he can wind up on the smaller track he will be hard to hold out.

SELECTIONS: No 15 MEDITERRANEAN, No 13 Niccolance, No 10 Deploy, No 3 Disgraceful

VALUE RUNNER: No 3 Disgraceful

SHAHRAZAD Has a good record first-up and at Canterbury and will be out to hold onto that first-up from a spell here. The trial leading in was quite good and from the barrier she won’t have to do any work and will be hard to beat.

RAIMENT Won well in dominant fashion first-up and should go on with it here. She had won her previous start before a spell and looks to be in a good vein of form. The way Godolphin are going at the minute you wouldn’t discount any of their horses.

SUSPENDERS (Best Roughie) Was quite good first-up in a listed race in Brisbane, the form from that race should hold up quite well and with no weight second-up she is well within a chance now.

SELECTIONS: No 4 No 10 SHAHRAZAD, No 13 Raiment, No 16 Suspenders

VALUE RUNNER: No 16 Suspenders
