Small fields the order of the night here at Canterbury

Wed, 4 Jan, 12:00 AM
Small fields the order of the night here at Canterbury, which is on the quick back-up from last Saturday’s meet. The maidens look quite intriguing and could be good races to follow in the future. We have fine weather in the lead up which should leave the track in the good reading and the rail is out 3m the circumference.

QUADDIES (Races 5-6-7-8)

Skinny: 7 – 1 – 10,11 – 4,5,6
Wide: 2,4,7 – 1 – 2,3,10,11,12 – 1,4,5,6

Next Best Bet: R5 N7 LE CAVALIER
Best Roughie: R3 N9 RED HEARTS

R1 - 6:15PM TAB REWARDS SPRINT - 1100m

CHAIN OF FOOLS Looked as if she’d had enough on debut in the Gimcrack and that was emphasized by her greenness and over racing in the run. She was well supported in the market that day and has trialled well twice leading into this and has to be hard to beat.

TE AMO Was off the map on debut and was just no match for Debonairly who ran super time. Robl was heard saying pre-race that she wasn’t screwed down, as he is aiming her at Karaka later this month. With natural improvement she has to be respected.

YULONG XINGSHENG Has trialled well leading into a debut run here, I do have a knock on these Freedman horses at the minute, as they seem to be trialling better than they are racing and its why she isn’t on top and I’ll play around them until I see consistent results.

LIPIZZAN Trialled well enough leading into this. I like how she travelled away from home for the trial, so leaving her home base won’t worry her tonight.

SELECTIONS: No 2 CHAIN OF FOOLS, No 1 Te Amo, No 6 Yulong Xingsheng, No 4 Lipizzan

VALUE RUNNER: No 6 Yulong Xingsheng

R2 – 6:45PM #THERACES HANDICAP - 1250m

BOLD CARLOTA Is suited on the quick backup here, the race wasn’t really run to suit last Saturday and this looks a much better race for her. I am waiting until the day the penny drops here. If and when it does we have an exciting horse on our hands.

TEST THE WORLD Was backed off the map on debut and smashed them at Scone after sitting wide throughout. The step up to 1250m can only suit her and if she improves from that debut win, lookout.

TICKLING Comes out of a good form race at Wyong last start, she did well as a 3yo filly against the older horses there. She gets the blinkers for the first time and drops a kilo and is sure to be thereabouts.

FOXY HOUSEWIFE Comes out of good races at her last two performances and looks suited here. She is going to get a perfect run on the map here from gate 2, and I won’t be surprised to see her springboard.

SELECTIONS: No 5 BOLD CARLOTA, No 8 Test The World, No 6 Tickling, No 2 Foxy Housewife

VALUE RUNNER: No 8 Test The World

R3 - 7:15PM TAB PLATE - 1100m

PRINCESS POSH Comes out of a hot race on debut at Newcastle. The trial leading into the first-up run was fantastic and quite stylish. With Avdulla on from gate 9, expect him to push forward and be hard to run down.

RED HEARTS (Best Roughie) Was good enough on debut on the heavy 10 at Warwick Farm. The form out of that race and around have been quite good. The trial at Wyong was quite nippy and expect a forward showing fresh.

GLORIETTE Is well experienced but has been taking on much stronger races than this. It is all listed/group form that has held up quite well over the last season. The trial was inconclusive/quiet. From gate 10 she probably goes back and has the last crack at them.

LAUNCH CODE Has trialled quite well leading into a debut run here. The James Cummings horses are in quite a groove at the minute and they seem to be running for Glyn quite well. From barrier 3 he is going to get a good run and be thereabouts.

SELECTIONS: No 8 PRINCESS POSH, No 9 Red Hearts, No 6 Gloriette, No 3 Launch Code

VALUE RUNNER: No 9 Red Hearts

AUSTIN Is overdue for a win and gets a race run to suit here. This race is really full of a bunch of “old mates” who have been taking themselves on over the last few months and the best ride wins the race and he is well set up after the previous run at 1900m.

MONTAUK This all depends which Montauk turns up. If he is at his best he could well blow them away. But if he is the Montauk we have seen at his last four he will get our money again and never give us a yell.

TRADTRI Drops back in grade after taking on Saturday level last week and wasn’t disgraced. He will find this much easier and was a strong winner two back.

DYLAN'S ROMANCE Comes out of a good race last start in which the form has stood up quite well. The form before that was quite scratchy, and I want to see him do it again.

SELECTIONS: No 6 AUSTIN, No 1 Montauk, No 3 Tradtri, No 4 Dylan’s Romance

VALUE RUNNER: No 4 Dylan’s Romance

R5 – 8:15PM TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP - 1550m

No 7 LE CAVALIER (Next Best Bet) Has been simply awesome in his last two at Wagga, he has had a double bias to contend with and should have won both not just one of them. The Ted Ryder Cup run last start was brilliant with no help from the jockey whatsoever. Back to 1550m is no issue at all and the booking of Shinn is a big plus here and he will be flying late.

No 1 CABEZA DE VACA (Best Bet) Gets everything to suit here, the small field, the step up in distance all tick perfectly. He just ran them into the ground last start and gave them no chance. With the small field here, I don’t see any pressure on him whatsoever and if he gets some cheap sectionals they won’t run him down.

R7 – 9:15PM SCHWEPPES SPRINT - 1100m

STAR CROSSED Should be much fitter second-up from a spell here, the form out of that first-up run behind Magicaz has stood up well and he is well weighted after a claim. The three weeks between runs looks ideal and he will be hard to beat.

VICEMAN Smashed them last week and backs-up quickly here. I do like it when Pride backs-up his horses and the form behind him looks quite good. He gets another dream run on the map and has a chance.

WIDE ACCLAIM Was good behind Deploy last start who has since won a Saturday race. This race is probably a touch tougher than that. But you need to respect that Deploy has won since and he stays at the T&D here.

LOVERBOY CHARLIE Has trialled quite well leading into this and has some nice form behind him. From barrier 7 Clark is going to need to be switched on early to find a spot and if he does he can finish over the top.

SELECTIONS: No 10 STAR CROSSED, No 11 Viceman, No 2 Wide Acclaim, No 3 Loverboy Charlie

TO BE SURE Trialled brilliantly leading into a first-up run here. The Baker team is flying currently and given that this horse has a good first-up record, I want her to be on my side.

WAY TOO GOOD Wasn’t at all suited by the wet track first-up and that probably cost her. Before that, she had really trialled up quite well. Back on a dry deck and second-up she will be hard to roll.

CIARLET Gets a gun run on the map yet again here like her win a few starts back. She wasn’t at all suited last start by the way the race was run. Shinn will just need a touch of luck at the top of the straight to be in the finish.

KNIT ’N’ PURL Trialled up well enough for this and I don’t expect her to roll forward like she has shown in recent starts. If she gets a soft enough run throughout, she can finish over the top.

SELECTIONS: No 4 TO BE SURE, No 5 Way Too Good, No 6 Ciarlet, No 1 Knit ‘N’ Purl

VALUE RUNNER: No 6 Ciarlet
