Gold Coast Betting Preview | Horse Racing Tips

The Gold Coast has been hit by heavy rain but has had some drying conditions as well.

Thu, 5 Jan, 12:00 AM

Exactly why this metropolitan standard meeting is at the Gold Coast a week before the rich Magic Millions day is anyone's guess. No one can give us a real answer.

The Gold Coast has been hit by heavy rain but has had some drying conditions as well. The problem is heavy rain is predicted for Saturday. Weather forecasts in south east Queensland are wildly inaccurate at this time of the year because for some reason one part can get 200mm while two kilometres away gets nothing.

So be very careful although the track should be in some stage of wet which means horses getting wide late in the day have an advantage here. In other words a day for caution especially as the fields get bigger as the day wears on.

QUADDIES (Races 5-6-7-8)

Skinny: 6,10/3,14/2,13/7
Wide: 6,7,10,11,12/3,6,10,14,15/2,7,13,16/7,11,13,15

Best Bet: R4 – 4. PANNO ROSSA
Next Best Bet: R8 – 7. FORGOTTEN YEARS
Best Roughie: R3 – 6. SCOTTY BE GOTTI

R1 - 12:27pm FIRST NATIONAL BROADBEACH QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap - 1800m

GOOD LUCK MALELA A very good run last start when forced to come wide to get a crack at them but got home like a genuine staying type. His wet track form isn't exactly outstanding but it is as good as any runner here with only a few horses having won in soft going.

HOSTWIN VINTAGE Has the best form of any horse in this track but has the top weight which will be no help. He was okay in his only wet track start.

STOKE IT UP Form is nothing to get excited about but this distance will suit and placed two of three starts on soft tracks.

GYPSY MISS She has better form than most of these and has been placed in the wet. This isn't strong and should be a hope.

SELECTIONS: NO 3 GOOD LUCK MALELA, NO 1 Hostwin Vintage, NO 13 Stoke It Up, NO 6 Gypsy Miss

R2 – 1.02pm FIRST NATIONAL REAL ESTATE GOLD COAST QTIS Two-Years-Old Handicap - 1100m

HOUTZEN Boom filly who is bound for the Magic Millions Classic. Might need to win this to be assured of a start in the big race. She was simply brilliant at her only start. She just needs to handle the wet track to beat these. No certainty to start here but if she does she should win.

MAKE MY OWN LUCK Not eligible for the Magic Millions so she has been set for this race. Very good at her two starts and from a wet track breed making her the obvious danger.

SISTA ACT She is chasing a place in the Magic Millions and has blinkers for the first time. The breed are okay in the wet without being champions. Her two starts have been good before having no luck last time.

UMAWINNER A brilliant trial winner at the Sunshine Coast last month but was scratched from a Group Three race last Saturday because of a barrier mishap. Having her first start here but is reportedly very smart and breed usually okay in the wet.

SELECTIONS: NO 1 HOUTZEN, NO 4 Make My Own Luck, NO 8 Sista Act, NO 9 Umawinner

VALUE RUNNER: NO 9 Umawinner

R3 – 1.37pm SMOKE ALARM SOLUTIONS BenchMark 75 Handicap - 2200m

LAREBIL Not the strongest 2200m race of all time and Larebil has won his past two starts at 1800m when finished well. Has solid soft track form and a light weight so rates highly here.

UNCLE GERRY Has been racing well in the Canberra area and the stable has a good strike rate in Queensland. His soft track form is only fair but most of those runs have been at unsuitable distances.

SCOTTY BE GOTTI (BEST ROUGHIE) Usually races well around this distance range and while has never won in the wet has been placed several times. He has the leading rider at this track but should be good value.

FUERZA Surprise winner last start and has paid the price at the weights. But good last time and must be a chance again.

SELECTIONS: NO 13 LAREBIL, NO 12 Uncle Gerry, NO 6 Scotty Be Gotti, NO 1 Fuerza

VALUE RUNNER: NO 6 Scotty Be Gotti

NO 4 PANNO ROSSA (BEST BET) A tough race with plenty of old timers who like wet tracks. But Panno Rossa is a horse on the up who has been good at his two starts back from a spell without running a place. He has probably been the staying find of this season and has won this track and distance. Stays down in the weights here and he has superior wet track form. Provided the track is genuinely wet, he will be very hard to toss.

R5 – 2.50pm FIRST NATIONAL PALM BEACH Class 3 Plate - 900m

HIDDEN LIGHT This is a nightmare race in which to tip and we could probably find a dozen horses with winning hopes. But we will go with a horse at big odds who likes this track and distance. She also has handy wet track form and gets in with a fly weight after a 3kgs claim. No special but at least she should give us a sight.

SIR DONALD He has plenty of pace and a good Doomben winner last start. Usually a hope this type of race and should handle a wet track.

JUST ORM He was considered good enough to run in last year's magic Millions Classic and hasn't run since. However, strong trial winner last month and this suits for comeback run.

DELIRIUM Has been good both starts this area which have resulted in short course wins. One of many horses with a lot of pace here.

SELECTIONS: NO 12 HIDDEN LIGHT, NO 5 Sir Donald, NO 10 Just Orm, NO 11 Delirium

VALUE RUNNER: NO 11 Delirium

R6 – 3.30pm NERANG RSL OPEN Handicap - 1200m

PILLAR OF CREATION He was terrible at his first run back from a spell but he is about six-lengths better on a wet track. Has been placed in stakes company and reunited here with a jockey who has won twice on him. Give a top chance here in what is a very tough race.

ECKSTEIN Promising three-year-old taking on a very tough field of seasoned sprinters. She has Sydney's leading jockey and has won on a soft track.

EL SASSO From a top Sydney stable and does have very good wet track form. First-up here and is a winner three times fresh. Must be respected.

DREAM CHOICE A class runner with a big weight but he does usually go well fresh and does like wet tracks. Another with a hope in a difficult race.

SELECTIONS: NO 3 PILLAR OF CREATION, NO 14 Eckstein, NO 8 El Sasso, NO 1 Dream Choice

VALUE RUNNER: NO 1 Dream Choice

RINGO’S A ROCKSTAR Promising horse who had no luck at all at his first run from a spell. In fact it was a great effort to run fourth. He won his only start on a wet track and is well in at the weights.

GROOVY GAL She is a very fast mare who was impressive winning a recent trial in handy time. She will probably lead this field and will be hard to beat although last 100m could be a worry.

ECKSTEIN She is engaged in two races but would be a top chance if runs here. Has won in better company than this and handles the wet.

HEARTFORD She has been racing very well in better races than this. Another who has won on a wet track and at this racecourse.

SELECTIONS: NO 13 RINGO’S A ROCKSTAR, NO 16 Groovy Gal, NO 7 Eckstein, NO 8 Heartford

VALUE RUNNER: NO 8 Heartford

R8 – 4.48pm SKY RACING ORIGIN JOCKEY SERIES Class 6 Plate - 1400m

NO 7 FORGOTTEN YEARS (NEXT BEST BET) He has been racing very well since a year off with injury. Has been crying out for a soft track and no matter what will get the sting out of the ground here. This is a tough race but even on a dry track he would be a hope but here looks a very strong each-way chance.
