Weather forecast is for overcast conditions, with a top temperature of 19C.

The track surface is rated a GOOD 4 and the rail will out 3-metres for the entire circuit.

An interesting meeting with several horses on the comeback trail and some up-and-coming stayers looking to consolidate against seasoned performers. Weights-and-measures could provide the key to success with a number of horses having re-matches on the roomy Flemington circuit. Everyone will be carefully watching the first race down the Flemington straight to ascertain the best barrier positions for subsequent straight-track races.

EMPTOR Promising type suited by blinkers being applied here. Won twice at Newcastle before venturing south to run a close third to Alter Call and Oak Door in similar grade 1200m Caulfield on Boxing Day. Meets Oak Door on better terms here and extra distance suits.

WIDGEE TURF Smart type who freshened up before beating Styleman BM70 over this trip 17 December then burst through ruck to challenge final 150m only to be beaten narrowly by Fuhryk 1200m Gold Carat Moonee Valley 31 December. In top form and will be hard to beat with 2kg claim.

OAK DOOR Has struck a purple patch of form and looms as one of the main chances. Just missed in thrilling three-way photo to Alter Call (Emptor third) in similar company Caulfield 1200m on Boxing Day. Stepped up to 1400m in beating Cliff Hanger comfortably at Sandown 4 January. Claims 2kg here but still meets Emptor 1kg worse for a narrow margin two runs back.

FUDGED Gained inside passage and drew clear to beat Rock’n’rollrock 1600m Sandown 21 December. Won 1400m Cranbourne Fillies’ Maiden two runs earlier and rates a place chance against the boys here.

SELECTIONS: No3 EMPTOR, No1 Widgee Turf, No2 Oak Door, No5 Fudged

VALUE RUNNER: No3 Emptor

R2 – 1.22pm Seascay Handicap – 2000m

HONEY CARA Tough little mare who is racing in great heart and will prove hard to run down. Produced a herculean effort when forced to work wide on track for half the race before crossing and finishing courageous one-length second to Prima 2040m BM78 Moonee Valley 31 December. Led until the last bound when photo fourth Tavi Bay 1700m this track three runs earlier 3 November and meets Hell Or Highwater 2kg better here for beating her a length in that race.

HELL OR HIGHWATER Rates highly on recent form with two wins and a second last three runs. Fought tenaciously to just beat Domino Vitale 1700m this track 10 December then slipped back to fourth at 150m but came again for neck second Kenjorwood 1700m Lord Stakes Caulfield on Boxing Day. Has plenty of courage and back to mares’ grade here.

VANDANCER Right at her peak now and has sound claims. Peaked on run final 50m when 1.2-length third Sweet Melody 1800m Mares BM70 Sandown 7 December then kicked clear on straightening and easily held My Sanctuary BM84 over the same trip on 24 December.

MY SANCTUARY Improved by three runs this campaign and will strip at her top for this. Chased hard when half-length third Castle Hackett and Big Duke 1600m Sandown BM70 then no match for Vandancer when 2.25-length second 1800m same track 24 December. Meets Vandancer on same weight terms here. Narrowly beaten at only start this track and distance.

VALUE RUNNER: No5 My Sanctuary

R3 – 1.57pm Meadow Mist Handicap – 1400m

PRINCESS ARROW Has created a huge impression winning last three over shorter trips and will measure up to class rise here. Effortless winner 1200m Mornington BM70 28 December then cruised home 2.25-lengths clear of Ascendance 1100m Werribee 5 December. Perfectly drawn in 2 and Damien Oliver goes back on to further enhance her prospects.

VITAL IMPORTANCE Is the class runner of the race but has struggled to regain her best in four runs since winning first-up 1400m Sale BM78 23 October. Hit the lead at 250m when 1.6-length sixth Aurum Spirit 1600m here 10 December when laid-in before rattling home for photo-finish second Violent Snow 1400m Caulfield on Boxing Day. Will be running on.

EXPINSIVE Impressive first-up winner 1170m Wangaratta BM70 6 December then was doing best work at the finish when 1.5-length fourth Violent Snow Caulfield 1400m on Boxing Day. Meets Vital Importance 1kg worse but has further improvement in her.

NEW SUMMER NIGHT Flew home to beat Lasayette second-up 1300m Sandown 7 December and not far away two subsequent runs. Finished strongly for 2.25-length sixth Deja Blue 1300m Sandown Mares BM70 21 December then finished wide on track when 1.15-length fifth Aurora Glow BM78 same trip 4 January. Meets Deja Blue 0.5kg better here.

SELECTIONS: No3 PRINCESS ARROW, No1 Vital Importance, No4 Expinsive, No6 New Summer Night

VALUE RUNNER: No4 Expinsive

R4 – 2.32pm Piping Lane Handicap – 1100m

BARTHELONA Produced an impressive turn of foot to motor home and win his first two starts – 1000m Sandown 31 August and 1100m Caulfield 17 September. Took on top grade and looked flat at next start when seven-length tenth Flying Artie Caulfield Blue Sapphire 1200m 12 October. Showed dash in recent jump-out and looks primed for a winning return.

INVINCIBLE AL In top form and will go close again. Game 1.75-length second Khaki straight 1200m here 10 December then desperately unlucky when fast-finishing nose second Pearl Congenial 1000m Sandown 24 December. This is slightly tougher than last start but gets in nicely with 3kg claim. Always hits the line hard.

STRICTLY LEGIT Super-impressive on debut when he sat deep and circled the field to trounce Bolossomo 1000m Mornington Three-Year-Old Maiden 20 December then last to turn and worked home well for two-length third Mystified 1100m Caulfield last Saturday. Smart type from strong stable and gives the impression he will be suited down the straight here. One of the dangers.

IF NOT NOW WHEN Impressed by winning first two starts 1000m Bendigo and Cranbourne March-April then disappointing as favourite and ninth Modern Wonder 1050m Morphettville Dequettville Stakes 23 April. Was given an easy run in recent jump-out in preparation for this. Keep safe.

R5 – 3.07pm Arbroath Handicap – 1000m

No2 DIVINE TEN (NEXT BEST BET) Top-quality former Hong Kong speedster who hasn’t raced for more than two years but has to be respected against moderate field of sprinters here. Beat Straight Gold 1000m Listed Sha Tin Bauhinia Sprint 6 April 2014 then photo second to Aerovelocity 1200m Sha Tin Vase 25 May 2014. Not raced since tenth Golden Harvest 1200m Sha Tin 14 September 2014 but is a class act who must be respected first-up. Oliver goes on, so where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

No9 ROCK ‘N’ GOLD

No4 BEAU RADA

No8 SUPER FUN

R6 - 3.42pm Rain Lover Handicap – 2500m

No6 ONCIDIUM RULER (BEST BET) Up-and-coming stayer who was narrowly beaten by Manapine in Galilee Final at only start this trip last April and has a win and a second from only two runs over 2400m. Proved too classy for Crediton Sandown BM70 2400m 4 January with 59kg and drops to 52kg with claim here. Hard to beat.

No3 SOVIET COURAGE

No9 HARDERN

No8 RENEW

R7 – 4.22pm Chester Manifold Stakes – 1400m

TONOPAH (Best Roughie) Was having first run for six months when he worked home solidly final 100m to finish three-length fifth Lucky Liberty, Grand Rosso 1200m Caulfield Listed Race on Boxing Day. Beat Melbourne Cup winner Prince of Penzance 1600m Morphettville two runs earlier last May. Has won twice second-up and extra trip in his favour at lucrative odds.

LORD ASPEN Very smart sprinter who loves the 1400m at Flemington and will be hard to beat. Was doing best work at the finish when 0.7-length fourth Odyssey Moon down the Flemington straight 1200m on New Year’s Day. Fitter for recent racing and ready to return to the form that saw him beat Rough Justice and Lucky Liberty over this trip 5 November.

GRANDE ROSSO Won two of last four starts and comes under notice again. Beat Burning Front 1400m Sandown 3 December before running on gamely for 1.25-length second Lucky Liberty 1200m Caulfield on Boxing Day. Meets Tonopah on same weight terms here with extra 200m.

DIVINE MR ARTIE Resumed with easy three-length win over Armada and Chiavari 1200m BM84 this track 10 December then favourite when game 1.2-length fifth Odyssey Moon straight 1200m here on New Year's Day. Better off going around the turn here and has to be considered.

SELECTIONS: No3 TONOPAH, No2 Lord Aspen, No4 Grande Rosso, No8 Divine Mr Artie

VALUE RUNNER: No3 Tonopah

R8 – 5.02pm Craftsman Handicap – 2000m

FLYING LIGHT Racing in peak form. Beat Gallic Chieftain, Prima BM84 over this trip 17 December then kicked clear on straightening and held off Master Zephyr same trip New Year’s Day. Meets Master Zephyr 1kg better here and Prima on same terms for their last clash.

MASTER OF ARTS Should be ready for this following two solid runs from a spell. Hit the line powerfully when half-length fourth Kenjorwood 1700m Caulfield Lord Stakes on Boxing Day. Has two wins over this track and this distance and rates highly.

CHANCE TO DANCE Well-supported first-up when worked home from second-last early to finish three-length fourth to Burning Front 1600m Caulfield last Saturday. Will strip fitter and extra distance will bring him into contention again.

MASTER ZEPHYR Getting near the money. Held up near the turn when solid 2.5-length third High Church 2030m Werribee Cup 11 December then doing best work at finish when 0.75-length second Flying Light over this trip on New Year's Day. Meets Flying Light on 1kg worse terms but can buck the odds here with further improvement.

VALUE RUNNER: No2 Chance to Dance

R9 – 5.35pm Tauto Handicap – 1100m

RICH CHARM Has three wins and five placings from ten starts and boasts an excellent record this track and distance. Covered extra ground when 1.75-length third Crystal Dreamer 1000m Sandown BM78 first-up 24 December. Fitter for the run and rates highly.

INVINCIBLE HEART Classy mare resuming from a lengthy spell but should run well fresh. Not far away last preparation when first-up fourth Nudierudie 1100m Caulfield 23 April. Proved her class in beating Silent Sedition, Little Indian four runs earlier 1200m Caulfield October 2015. Respected.

WALL STREET WOLF Beat El Dorado Mine 1300m Geelong Synthetic 12 August then jumped awkwardly when favourite and ninth Tapestry Vision 1300m Sandown BM70 24 August. Meets Rich Charm 2kg worse for being beaten by that horse in earlier race. Won a recent Tatura barrier trial so will strip fit first-up.

ARMADA Improved by recent racing. Ran on gamely for three-length second Divine Mr Artie straight 1200m BM84 here 10 December then fractious in gates before 2.35-length seventh Roman Fizz 1200m Moonee Valley BM78 31 December. Could pay to forgive last run. One to watch.
