Sandown Betting Preview | Horse Racing Tips

Melbourne’s fickle weather can throw form on its head at Sandown!

Mon, 16 Jan, 12:00 AM

Showers are predicted in the morning, easing in the afternoon. Top temperature will be 22C.

With rain predicted, it could pay to wait until the afternoon to properly assess the chances. A number of horses will have their prospects enhanced by rain-affected going – particularly

European horses and those with proven form on synthetic racing surfaces.

As shown with last Friday’s sudden downgrade of the Cranbourne track, Melbourne’s fickle weather can throw form on its head.

The rail will be in the TRUE position for the entire circuit. The track is predicted as Good 4 rating.

Next Best Bet: R1 – 3. Into Orbit
Best Roughie: R6 – 6. Imperial Empress

R1 - 1.30pm Handicap - 1000m

No 3 INTO ORBIT (NEXT BEST BET) Most impressive at debut when he sat outside the leader to turn before powering away for effortless 4.5-length win over La Bandita 1100m Pakenham Synthetic Maiden 23 August. Classy type who will be more mature now and another strong first-up showing expected.

R2 – 2.00pm Yarramalong Racing Club Plate – 1800m

RODIN’S DOLL Promising filly who has been doing best work at the finish of recent starts and gets her chance to break through here. Held up in straight when six-length third Shadow Prince Cranbourne 2025m Maiden 23 December then game two-length second 2000m Werribee 5 January. Will be suited by the roomier track and Craig Williams goes on here.

IHEARTPOPPY Desperately unlucky at second start when held up from turn until final 120m when fast-finishing second Toff Of The Town 1700m Geelong Maiden 2 January. Impressive long-striding filly who will prove hard to beat.

CAPTAIN ARABIA Smart colt who is nicely placed against some handy fillies here. Solid debut third Power Up Rise 1200m Moonee Valley then favourite but lost rider Sandown 21 December. Only plodded when 3.5-length third Nepean 1400m Randwick 2 January. Extra distance an advantage.

PULL THE RIPCORD Placed at eight of last nine starts and has to be included in multiples again.

SELECTIONS: No13 RODIN’S DOLL, No12 Iheartpoppy, No10 Captain Arabia, No6 Pull The Ripcord

VALUE RUNNER: No10 Captain Arabia

R3 – 2.30pm Handicap – 1300m

LEODORO Has returned in brilliant form with a commanding first-up win over Chateau Cheval 1000m Cranbourne 23 December then got within a length of subsequent Flemington winner Rocket Tommy 1000m here 4 January. Meets Chateau Cheval 4kg worse here but looks the one to beat again.

I BOOGI Runner-up last three starts and could break through here. Closed late when photo second Knowable 1100m Cranbourne 2 January. Fitter now and goes well this track.

CHATEAU CHEVAL Improved by two runs this campaign and meets Leodoro 4kg better with claim on length second 1000m Cranbourne BM64 23 December. Wouldn’t settle early when second Mr Sneaky 1100m Werribee BM64 5 January.

BARMAID FROM WYE Came from the clouds to beat Our Dexter 1300m Stawell BM58 6 January. Facing tougher opposition here but the way she storms home suggests she will love the long straight here.

SELECTIONS: No1 LEODORO, No6 I Boogi, No5 Chateau Cheval, No7 Barmaid From Wye

VALUE RUNNER: No7 Barmaid From Wye

R4 – 3.00pm Dream Thoroughbreds Handicap - 1600m

CLIFF HANGER Bound to strip fitter after gritty 1.75-length second to Oak Door first-up over 1400m here on 4 January. Extra distance in his favour. Oak Door franked that form by beating a quality field at Flemington last Saturday.

ZOLOTOI Mixes his form but has produced some stunning finishing bursts in South Australia and could be a smokey in this field with Damian Oliver aboard. Market may be best guide.

YULONG SHENG LONG Lightly-raced and shows promise. At third run from spell proved too strong for Night Sight 1600m Maiden over this course 4 January. Should continue to improve in this better company.

HETUKA ZARSHO Couldn’t have been more impressive when he overcame trouble to storm home and beat Patche Gift 1500m Geelong BM58 2 January. That win was completely against the pattern for the day which augurs well for further improvement here.

SELECTIONS: No5 CLIFF HANGER, No4 Zolotoi, No7 Yulong Sheng Long, No2 Hetuka Zarsho.

R5 – 3.30pm Thoroughbred Club Handicap – 1300m

WITCHES Went to the post better than anything when 0.75-length second to the smart Crystal Fountain 1200m Moonee Valley 31 December. Perfectly drawn to get a good run and should find this slightly easier.

DREAM FIRST Trailed Let’s Go To Rio into straight and gave him ‘windburn’ 1200m Mornington Maiden 28 December. The second horse has since won Sandown midweek against better company than this so she will go close against own age and sex here. Each-way claims.

PRIVATE LOUNGE Didn’t get clear until final 150m and motored home to beat Jaybee Out 1200m Echuca Maiden 31 December. Facing stiffer opposition here but is a likely improver with obvious ability.

EXTRA OLIVES Honest filly who chased the winner throughout when 1.25-length second Sullivan Bay slightly tougher grade Moonee Valley 1200m 31 December. Should be handy from good inside draw.

SELECTIONS: No7 WITCHES, No9 Dream First, No5 Private Lounge, No1 Extra Olives

VALUE RUNNER: No9 Dream First

R6 -4.00pm Ladbrokes Handicap – 1000m

IMPERIAL EMPRESS (BEST ROUGHIE) At her peak now following four runs this campaign. Wide throughout when courageous second Go Down 1000m Moonee Valley Fillies-and-Mares BM70 18 November then ran home solidly for 2.8-length fourth New Summer Night 1300m here 7 December. Freshened for this trip and will be running home powerfully.

CONSPICUOUS MAID Slashing first-up effort when she sprinted quickly to hit the lead momentarily before being swamped by Little Indian Flemington straight 1000m New Year’s Day. Has one win and eight placings from 13 starts and sure to figure in the money again.

NORTHKAPE Won her first two runs this time in over 1000m Cranbourne BM64 and BM70 in December and she should prove hard to run down again.

HARD SPARK Won Wangaratta 1170m Maiden and Echuca 1100m BM58 before courageous 2.5-length second Essence Of Terror 1200m Cranbourne BM64 30 December. Has to be considered again.

SELECTIONS: No6 IMPERIAL EMPRESS, No5 Conspicuous Maid, No2 Northkape, No10 Hard Spark

VALUE RUNNER: No6 Imperial Empress

R7 – 4.30pm Le Pine Funerals Handicap – 2400m

No2 CROCODILE ROCK (BEST BET) Lightly-raced former Irish stayer who rolled forward to lead from 1600m and gave nothing else a chance when winning first-up 2100m this track April 27. Raced just off the pace and worked home solidly at first run for eight months when half-length second Gervais 1600m Flemington on New Year’s Day. Fitter now and will relish this distance. Hard to beat.

R8 – 5.00pm Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap - 1800m

SKULDUGGERY Has struck form since changing stables and being allowed to drop out early and saved for one burst. Backed-up from photo second to Lola Lu BM64 over this trip 4 January when he stormed home to beat Royal Applause 1700m Caulfield BM70 7 January. Still does a lot wrong but has class on his side.

WHEAL LEISURE Got home better than anything at only second start when three-length fifth Gervais, Crocodile Rock 1600m Flemington BM70 New Year’s Day. Won 1400m Terang Maiden on debut 5 December and while rising quickly in grade, will be finishing on.

LOLA LU Has three wins and three close-up fourths from last six starts and goes well this course. Forced to go forward when battling 0.7-length fourth Sammy The Snake this trip 21 December then came from last to pip Skulduggery same trip 4 January. Meets Skulduggery 0.5kg better with 3kg claim here.

SIR PROSPECTOR Former Irish stayer who fought back strongly for first-up two-length second Spur On Gold 2000m Flemington 7 May then forced to work forward from wide gate when plugging eight Amarela 1800m Flemington 21 May. Chances enhanced with a rain-affected track.

SELECTIONS: No10 SKULDUGGERY, No16 Wheal Leisure, No8 Lola Lu, No2 Sir Prospector

VALUE RUNNER: No16 Wheal Leisure
