Wed, 25 Jan, 11:31 AM
The track surface is rated a GOOD 4. The rail will be in the TRUE position for the entire circuit. Group racing returns to Moonee Valley with the mouth-watering clash between spring stars Malaguerra and Black Heart Bart with the up-and-coming Sydney sprinter Chetwood in the Group Two Australia Stakes over 1200m. Malaguerra and Chetwood will need to overcome wide barriers whereas “Bart” is ideally situated in gate No. 3 and should take up a positive position without too much effort. QUADDIES (Races 6-7-8-9)

BIG JOHN CANNON Promising type who jumped up to Group Three class at second start to finish 1.85-length third Archives, Crafted this track and distance 22 October. That is excellent form for this and a forward first-up showing is on the cards.

LAYNE’S STAR Placed at three of four starts this campaign and should be peaking for this. Got home strongly for 1.5-length second Go Gracey 1200m Colac Maiden 17 December then fought on strongly for 0.75-length second Bonus D’Oro 1200m Geelong Maiden 2 January. Should give a good sight from inside barrier.

MARQUANT Stable has a strong record of producing horses first-up and this Fastnet Rock gelding has Dwayne Dunn in the saddle. Market is best guide.

LIMESTONE COWBOY Placed at two of three starts and should measure up to the slight rise in class here. Drawn wide when fifth Yacht Club Bendigo Maiden 18 December then improved 3.35-length third Havadash 1300m Stawell Three-Year-Old Maiden 6 January. Has to be respected.

No2 PROPERTY (BEST BET) Ran into a real top-liner on debut and should find this an easier assignment. Led clearly but raced erratically in straight when game 2.2-length second to Catchy 1100m Caulfield 7 January. Should have improved his manners with that experience and Craig Williams will give him every chance from barrier one.

R3 – 7.30pm Simpson Construction Handicap – 1000m

ANGRY GEE Racing in great form and looks nicely placed dropping in class here with Jack Martin’s 3kg claim. Solid length second Lady Esprit BM70 over this trip 31 December then finished gamely out wide for 1.5-length fourth Lady Esprit BM84 same course last Saturday.

PUNT CLUB Speedy type with two wins and five placings from 11 starts who will go forward again from outside draw. Led but overhauled by One More Daisy 1050m Morphettville BM70 10 December then battled gamely for 2.75-length third Rocket Tommy, Leodoro 1000m Sandown 4 January. Both those horses have won since so the form looks pretty strong for this.

MILITARY Excellent fresh run when he rocketed home from last for nose second Kentucky Flyer 1000m Cranbourne Soft-5 track last Friday. Tends to find trouble in his races but can figure in the finish if given a clear run.

STAR STEALER Just behind the placegetters two runs since beating Chivadahli 1200m Echuca BM78 June 27. Has won four and placed three times from 15 starts and likely to sprint well first-up. One to watch.

Finished too well for Rock’n’rollrock 1600m Sandown similar grade 21 December then ran home boldly fresh for 2.75-length third Oak Door Widgee Turf 1400m Flemington BM78 last Saturday week. Looks to have the class edge on these.

R6 -9.00pm 1Print Tour Of Victoria Distance Series Heat 4 – 2040m

ON WINGS Close-up three runs since beating Three Strykes first-up 1400m Ballarat BM64 21 November. Didn’t handle track when favourite and 2.5-length ninth Sammy The Snake 1800m Sandown BM70 21 December then worked home nicely for three-length third Skulduggery 1700m Caulfield 7 December. Gets his chance to bounce back here for Damian Lane.

ZILBIYR Former European stayer improved by two recent runs. Hit the line nicely when first-up photo third Antrim Belle, Tre Dierci 1500m Mornington BM64 20 December then forced to work wide on track throughout when fighting length third Manny 2042m Warrnambool 15 January. Should be peaking now and rates highly with 5kg weight drop.

BALF’S CHOICE Getting back to more suitable distances. Struck trouble when 4.85-length seventh Skulduggery 1700m Caulfield 7 December then finished fast to just miss when second Have Plenty 1950m Morphettville BM70 last Saturday week. Chance with luck in running.

RICHARD OF YORKE Proven over more ground so will appreciate this distance. Has put in a dash before peaking final 50m last three runs, latest 2.85-length seventh Playful Rosie Sandown last Wednesday week. Will have been given a good trackwork blow-out since so he runs through the line in this. Oliver sticks. Keep safe.

Overpowered Le Romain, Famous Seamus 1350m Newcastle Cameron Handicap 16 September then toyed with Rough Justice, Sistine Demon 1400m Caulfield 8 October. Turned in a couple of excellent barrier trials in preparation for this. Wide draw and first time on the track are the only concerns.
