Stakes racing returns to Sydney this week with what is essentially the start of the carnival. We have Group races / slipper lead ups for the 2yos starting and the Expressway stakes for the older horses. A welcome back to Corey Brown after three years in Singapore too. He only adds depth to the riding ranks. The rail is in the true position and with the potential for showers around this week, we will be dealing with a SOFT track. QUADDIES (Races 6-7-8-9)

Skinny: 1 – 2,4,5,9 – 4,5,12 – 3
Wide: 1 – 1,2,4,5,7,8,9 – 4,5,12 – 1,3,5,7,9

Next Best Bet: R9 N3 YOUR WAY
Best Roughie: R7 N4 SEWREEL

R1 -12:40pm CANONBURY STAKES - 1100m

SHOWTIME Has trialled quite well leading into this first-up run. On debut he started $1.75 and ran sizzling time that day. I think Tommy would have his time over if he could, as he was too cute sitting behind the filly with race fitness. Second preparation first-up and with blinkers on he looks ready to go and will be a slipper player.

MENARI Amazing win on debut where nothing went right, he missed the kick, over-raced a touch and when the gap came he exploded through it and won well. Second start with a senior on board he looks to take up the speed here and be hard to run down.

HUALALAI Not sure what went wrong on debut. He had trialled in amazing fashion and started $1.35 in the race there and he was gone at the 600m. He has been back to the trials since and has done well.

MALAHAT Looked as if he was looking for a bigger track on debut at Canterbury and would take a lot from the hitout. He has been back to the trials since and was quite good behind Showtime there.

SELECTIONS: No 2 SHOWTIME, No 1 Menari, No 5 Hualalai, No 3 Malahat

VALUE RUNNER: No 2 Showtime

R2 – 1:20pm WIDDEN STAKES - 1100m

MILANESE GIRL Should have won on debut, she was green in the run and didn’t get the best steer from Collett that day. She comes here at the start of her second preparation with blinkers on for the first time and at her home track, she should be improved for the effort.

AUNT LIBERTY Won well on debut at Newcastle and in fast time, she really pinned her ears back there and wanted to win and got the job done well. Back to 1100m is no issue here whatsoever and she’s going to be hard to run down.

SWEET DEAL Has trialled well leading into a debut run here. She is drawn to get a really good run and she will suit Collett as she will get back in the run and scrape the paint and have the last shot at them.

BOOROOJ Has improved with each and every trial leading into a debut run here. She gets Avdulla for the debut who will keep her mind on the job. From the gate she probably settles behind the speed and flys late.

SELECTIONS: No 4 MILANESE GIRL, No 5 Aunt Liberty, No 13 Sweet Deal, No 9 Boorooj

VALUE RUNNER: No 13 Sweet Deal

R3 - 1:55pm SCHWEPPES HANDICAP - 1500m

PIPELINE Should find this much easier than the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast. He came from a long way back there and hit the line well. He has no weight on his back here and from gate 1 he is going to get all favours here

CHOICE WE HAD Won’t be as far off the leaders as he has been at his last few runs. He was in a sticky spot three pairs back in the run at Randwick and only got clear late. With no weight on his back he is hard to beat.

DYLAN'S ROJO Looks to take up the speed here and will give sight given his last-start run at Randwick. He jumped and ran them along and was only nabbed late. He goes down 3kgs for that effort and will be hard to run past.

CAUTHEN'S POWER Backs up quickly here after leading last week which was not his go at all. From barrier 3 I think he will sit just off them here and Shinn will ride him in that “cuddle cuddle” way that we see him with horses who have that short sharp sprint.

SELECTIONS: No 8 PIPELINE, No 5 Choice We Had, No 4 Dylan’s Rojo, No 3 Cauthen’s Power

VALUE RUNNER: No 4 Dylan’s Rojo

R4 -2:30pm TAB HIGHWAY PLATE - 1500m

RUTHLESS AGENT Has won three on end since starting his career and the first-up win at Canberra was very strong. Big jockey upgrade from Poland to Bell to Shinn and I’m not too concerned about gate 14 as he will be able to wind up and get at them late.

CIRCLE GAME Over-raced the other day and it really cost her any chance of winning there. The form out of that race has stood up quite well with Via Napoli and Anisha running the quinella last week. From 13 she will have to go back.

MADAME DE BAN Was just run down late in a similar race last start. She has had a month between runs and gets Bowman here. The form out of that race has held up quite well and the form needs to be respected.

BOLD BEGINNING Had a good run last start and found the line quite well there. That didn’t look to be too bad a highway and the form should be respected.

SELECTIONS: No 6 RUTHLESS AGENT, No 10 Circle Game, No 11 Madame De Ban, No 13 Bold Beginning

VALUE RUNNER: No 10 Circle Game

R5 – 3:05pm TAB HANDICAP - 1400m

AUSTRALIANA Won in extraordinary circumstances on debut at Newcastle, he hit the ground running and didn’t stop, just demolishing them by five lengths and running 33.01 for his last 600m. This is a logical step at his second start and he will be hard to run down.

AWOKE Returns here and gets right down in the weights after taking on group level races last time in. The trial leading in was quite good and I like the booking of Avdulla as he has a history with her.

NEPEAN Won his maiden well at the New Year meeting at Randwick. He is drawn to get a perfect run yet again here from 1. Glyn and Cummings have become a lethal duo in recent times and I think this horse can go on.

ECHO EFFECT Was no better than three wide in the run last start. He is drawn to go forward and sit off Australiana here. If he can settle in the run he will give sight here.

SELECTIONS: No 7 AUSTRALIANA, No 8 Awoke, No 5 Nepean, No 2 Echo Effect

SEWREEL (Best Roughie) Was good in her Australian debut at Gosford in a group race behind Imposing Lass, I don’t think the tight track suited her there and getting to the open spaces of Rosehill will suit as does Doyle and the blinkers on.

MONTAUK Backs up quickly here and I still don’t get how he won last week. Was that actually Montauk? He charged through the line there and had turned his form around. If he keeps that up he has a chance here.

GOLD AMBITION One last chance for him here as he has teased us way too many times this time in. A lot of people will have dropped off after his last start. But I’m throwing him in one last time.

SELECTIONS: No 9 HARPER'S CHOICE, No 4 Sewreel, No 5 Montauk, No 2 Gold Ambition

VALUE RUNNER: No 4 Sewreel

R6 -3:40pm EXPRESSWAY STAKES - 1200m

No1 MUSIC MAGNATE (Best Bet) Looks to have a mortgage on this race class wise. He is a group 1 winner at WFA here. He has trialled brilliantly on two occasions and you may have missed the last one as the camera was focused on Winx that day. He has the speed to lead this field or sit off Ball Of Muscle. Whatever he does, barring bad luck he will win!

R8 – 5:00PM #THERACES HANDICAP - 1100m

BADAJOZ Was thrown over the line late by Doyle when resuming, he looked to be laboring and was lacking match practice till Doyle lifted him late. Second-up from a spell he should be much fitter and hard to beat.

SCARLET RAIN Has not been seen in close on a year where she won three of four before a failure in the slipper. First-up over 1100m from two trials, I do not see her race pattern changing and she will hit the ground running and be hard to beat.

SANGIOVESE Looks much more suited back to the 1100m here as she just tired late over the 1200m at Randwick. She drops 3.5kgs to the 53 here and with Avdulla on board she is going to be hard to beat.

QUATRONIC Has a good fresh record and looks to be well placed by Dunn here. From barrier 10 he sits just off them and with even luck he will be in the finish.

SELECTIONS: No 4 BADAJOZ, No 5 Scarlett Rain, No 12 Sangiovese, No 10 Quatronic

VALUE RUNNER: No 10 Quatronic

R9 – 5:40pm TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP - 1350m

No 3 YOUR WAY (Next Best bet) Won in brilliant fashion second-up at Canterbury, she was on the speed and gave a great kick on the turn and only tired late there for a big win with 60.5kgs. Third-up to 1350m looks to suit perfectly here as she will get all favors in the run and be hard to beat.
