Even if Chrome would have drawn better and had an easier run in transit, it’s hard to envisage the eventual widening gap being closed (4.5L on the turn to 15L+ at the post). A very unfortunate way for a genuine champion of the turf to bow out.

\n

Such sentiments were echoed by Arrogate’s trainer Bob Baffert:

\n

\"I feel bad about California Chrome, he just didn't bring his race today so the match-up never came about.”

\n

Similarly, jockey Mike Smith simply said, “That was not the real California Chrome today”.

\n

Exciting times still lay on the horizon for Chrome as he heads to the breeding barn now and no one is more excited about those prospects than his trainer Art Sherman, who made the following comments to NBC after the race:

\n

“That’s the first bad race he’s ever run for me,

\n

“We had a great run, I congratulate Bob Baffert, that horse is really a super nice horse.

\n

“He’s (Chrome) off to the breeding shed. I just hope his babies come back to me three years from now.

\n

“It’s been one hell of a journey for me.”

\n

From a punting perspective moving forward, Shaman Ghost who ran on for second (at a healthy $4.30 to place) is certainly one to follow. This colt certainly seems to have come back well from the fever that forced him out of this years $6M Breeder’s Classic (where Arrogate narrowly denied Chrome) as he was going through his gears very nicely late attacking the line.

\n

The biggest talking point about the race however is arguably off the track. A completely new business model was adopted by the participants in this race.

\n

Of the 12 horses to run, each investor puts up a purse of $1M, yielding the total $12M. Then of this: $7M to the winner (Arrogate), $1.75M for second (Shaman Ghost) and $1M for third (Neolithic).

\n

However an investor may choose to sell their place in the cup to another competitor if they wish. They are in total control of their position in the race.

\n

Furthermore, to add to the purse of each runner comes a share in wagering, sponsorship and media rights. So forking out $1M for your $51 shot may not seem as ludicrous as it may have.

\n

Could a model such as this work in Australia? Given the success of our product over many years and the continual rise in prize money in big Group 1 races, a trial would be intriguing.

Horse Racing News | California Chrome denied in Pegasus World Cup

Arrogate denies California Chrome a final victory in the first running of the world’s richest race

ARROGATE EASILY DENIES CHROME IN FINAL RACE

In a fitting debut for the new world’s richest race (US$12M), Arrogate and California Chrome, recently dubbed the world’s two best horses did battle.

According to the betting, it was only a two horse race with the eventual winner Arrogate firming from an opening quote of even money into the red at $1.80. Whilst, conversely California Chrome was a drifter: $2.50-$2.80.

The betting trends were to be as expected after Arrogate came up with the 1 draw, whilst Chrome drew the widest barrier in 12. What is still mesmerizing to an Australian racing follower is the route carved out by champion jockey Victor Espenoza; carving across from barrier 12 and contempt to sit 4-5 pairs wide with no cover for the 1800m trip.

But that’s the way on the dirt in the US.

Even if Chrome would have drawn better and had an easier run in transit, it’s hard to envisage the eventual widening gap being closed (4.5L on the turn to 15L+ at the post). A very unfortunate way for a genuine champion of the turf to bow out.

Such sentiments were echoed by Arrogate’s trainer Bob Baffert:

"I feel bad about California Chrome, he just didn't bring his race today so the match-up never came about.”

Similarly, jockey Mike Smith simply said, “That was not the real California Chrome today”.
