Friday Night racing comes to us from Canterbury and we have a good meeting on the cards here. The 2yo race is quite interesting to kick off proceedings. A month ago this was a Saturday race card, so it means the good horses are back. There is rain predicted in the lead-up to the meeting here. I have done the form for a soft track. The rail is +3 the circumference.

QUADDIES (Races 5-6-7-8)

Skinny: 1,8 – 3,4,9 – 4 – 6,8,10
Wide: 1,3,8,9 – 2,3,4,9 – 4,5,9,13 – 4,5,6,7,8,10,11

Next Best Bet: R3 N1 DARK EYES
Best Roughie: R6 N9 UPSTART

R1 - 6:15pm. TAB REWARDS PLATE - 1100m.

No 9 GRASSLANDS (Also accepted Saturday) Comes out of the Gimcrack behind Jorda on debut which is a race that always holds up each year. The trial leading in was impressive. Freedman now starting to hit his straps in Sydney and must be respected.

No 6 SEDITION Is well bred being out of Jerezana who was a group class mare. The trial leading in was quiet and there looked to be a little bit of gas under the hood there. The draw makes it a touch sticky though.

No 10 NICCI'S GOLD Gets blinkers on for a debut here and had them on in the last trial where she extended quite well. From gate 10, I see Clark firing across from the gate as she showed a lot of toe in her last trial.

R2 -6:45pm. #THERACES HANDICAP - 1550m.

No 6 BIRDSONG Has good form around her and has hit the line well enough in her past few to make the step up to 1550m ideal here. With only 54.5kg on her back, Clark will need a touch of luck early, but with recent form around her. She’s hard to beat.

No 2 CLEESE Closed off quite well on debut at Newcastle. I like the step up to 1550m here as he looked as if he needed ground in his trials. From gate 1 he is going to get a good run in the race and will be hard to beat.

No 3 DAHOOIL Hit the line powerfully first up in a good race. The step up to 1550m quickly looks as if it will suit. Tommy coming off a G1 win in Hong Kong earlier in the week will be full of confidence and be in the finish somewhere.

BIRDSONGCanterbury Park AUS 07:45 - Winner

R3 -7:15pm. TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP - 1900m

No 1 DARK EYES (Next Best Bet) Was probably a touch flat last start after winning with 62kgs in a really tough effort at the New Year’s meeting. On 14/1 they rolled along at quick tempo in that race and he was left flat footed and just ground away. Back to the trials since and he did what was needed there. Up to the 1900m now suits, as does the weight drop and he will be hard to beat.

No 2 COLONEL CUSTER Was left alone in front last start. If he is again he will be hard to run down.

No 7 STORM SYSTEM Finally up in distance here and has been working through the line well.

R4 -7:45pm. RANVET HANDICAP - 1550m.

No 4 FUNLOVING Has been going quite well as of late leading all the way in her past two. Stays at the same distance here and if left alone in front she is going to be hard to beat again after the claim.

No 1 ARIGOLD Probably a touch disappointing when rolled last week at Hawkesbury. But the run was still quite good. His previous run at the track he was a winner. Record around the mile is great and has a chance again.

No 6 AUSTIN Gets Glyn here, who has been low flying as of late. He is an enigma. Kind of like Montauk in the same colours. If he brings his best form he will be in the finish.

No 5 CALM AND SERENE Won well last start and stays at the mile here. McEvoy got everything out of her last start and stays with her here. If she can find the front she has her chance.

FUNLOVINGCanterbury Park AUS 08:45 - Winner

R5 -8:15pm. TAB HANDICAP - 1250m

No 8 REACH FOR HEAVEN Was the run of the day in my view last start at Randwick. He got a mile back in a race that wasn’t run to suit and really finished off well in the worst ground. Second-up here with Avdulla on, he is going to be hard to beat.

No 1 AJANI Was a big winner in the rich maiden at the Magic Millions. He produced an effort that was proven to be against the bias at the end of the day. The one concern is the travel up to Queensland and back.

No 3 GHOSTLY Was quite poor last start at Randwick when second-up. He was off the bit at the 500m and just gave nothing. The win previous to that was quite strong. This is a nice race with a few nice horses. With the blinkers and tongue tie on here, I’ll give him another chance.

No 9 REVOLVER Has trialled well enough leading into this race after coming out of a really good form race previous to that in September. From gate 12, first-up he probably goes back and has the last shot at them.

REACH FOR HEAVENCanterbury Park AUS 09:15 - Winner

R6 - 8:45pm. TOOHEYS NEW SHOOTING STAR - 1250m.

No 3 WAY TOO GOOD Backs up after a run on Australia Day and looks ready to win after three good runs this preparation. The Australia Day race should stack up well enough here and expected rain won’t be an issue with placings on wet tracks in the past.

No 4 MACHINEGUN JUBS Missed the kick last start and then proceeded to over-race throughout the event. That told on him late as he wasn’t able to make ground off Badajoz. The step up to 1250m suits and he has a chance.

No 9 UPSTART (Best Roughie) Should have won at the Magic Millions meeting. He had no luck whatsoever when he needed it. Third-up at 1250m from a soft gate and McEvoy on board he has his chance

R7 -9:15pm. SCHWEPPES HANDICAP - 1100m.

No 4 SPIRIT AND FIRE (Best Bet) Won well upon resumption over the course and distance on 11/1. He was thrown over the line that day and looked a touch underdone. He should be much more improved for that effort and gets a good jockey change in Berry here. He is 2/2 at the track and distance and will be hard to beat here.

No 5 SUPPLY AND DEMAND Brings a good first-up record to this race and has trialled well.

No 9 GOLDEN SHOES Finished second to Spirit And Fire last start and has a chance again here.

No 13 INVINCIBLE DAME Won well last start and looks to be suited yet again here.

SPIRIT AND FIRE Canterbury Park AUS 10:15 - Winner

No 6 CHATUCHAK Won well first-up at Gosford. He should be improved for that win, and if he does do that with a win previously second-up and getting Doyle he has a big chance here.

No 8 MADAME LILY Closed off well first-up. They did get smashed by the winner there. But she was a mile off them at the home turn and really closed powerfully and the step up to 1250m here will suit as will the bigger field.

No 10 SAMMI JAIN @nd at the last couple of starts gives Sammi a knockout chance here, especially with the 3kg claim.
