DAY RACING HORSES TO FOLLOW: Randick: 04-02-2017

It was Chinese New Year race day at Royal Randwick (hence all the 8’s in prices) last weekend and there was competitive racing all throughout the day, headlined by the Breeders classic.

The track played very evenly throughout the whole program after slight showers the day before. All runners got their chance.

OBVIOUS PICK – RELIGIFY: What a horse this gelding has been for connections, winning his 10th race from 25 starts. Jumping at $3.18, the son of Choisir was solid in the market without being extremely well backed. Punters were looking more towards Strawberry boy: $3.98 and Gold Symphony: $4.08-$3.78.

However, the race played out completely differently to the betting with Religify running them into the ground up front, galloping in under his own steam by 2.3 lengths, taking his earnings up over the $500,000 threshold.

Given his extremely favourable racing pattern of running along and giving a kick under any weight placed on his back it’s not hard to envisage him giving a quality mile race a shake, perhaps finding a few out at running strong early sectionals. Perhaps even the Ajax over 1500m on the 11th of March at Rosehill would suit.

Record: 25:10-5-2

Where to next? James Ruse Handicap: 1500m, Rosehill 18/02.

GOOD MARE RETURNING PICK – DENMAGIC: Although the winner Dal Cielo dominated the betting, $7.08 held up for most of the betting about this group 1-placed mare resuming.

She (and the winner) were 2 of only 3 runners to break the 34s threshold for the last 600m split of the meeting, running 33.84s. One would expect fast times in a 1000m contest, however this mare is much better suited out to the 1400-2000m races once she’s fit. So to see her trademark turn of foot on show so early in the prep is a sign of good things to come.

It is easy to speculate after that run that a race like the Coolmore Classic: 1500m on the 11th of March would be on the radar down the track.

Record: 19:2-4-4
