SATURDAY RACING HORSES TO FOLLOW: CAULFIELD: 25-02-2017Very different conditions in Caulfield to Randwick this weekend with racing on a good 3 surface for the duration of the card. The first of the major two year old races kick off last Saturday with Catchy Saluting from our black book. She might have a few big hurdles if she’s going to contest the slipper ($26-$11), but given the way she rounded the field up and ATC Sires ($26-$11) over the 1400m may be a good race. Another runner from our black book which deserves a mention is Humidor. Certainly looking on target for the Australian cup as he stormed into second from the back to be narrowly denied by 0.2L. He’s now $6 into $4.60 for that race. RUN-ON SELECTION – OREGON’S DAY: Another good run for this daughter of Domesday. Flew home once again to grab third after jumping at the generous quote of $7.50 coming in two points during the betting. Certainly relishing the scratching of short race favourite Fuhryk, she sat 7th in the running off a decent tempo so was entitled to rattle home. Seemed to respond in short bursts when Zahra pushed the button suggesting she’ll take benefit from the run having been second up. As the cream off the crop 3YO’s start to break away and contest the big Group 1 races, if she stays at just this level under against her own sex, I think she’ll be breaking through sooner than later. Staying at 1400m probably looks ideal, as her best split was a quick 11.02s from the 400m to the 200m. However once fit she wouldn’t be out of touch at a mile if it weren’t run at breakneck speed. Running a 0.1L second to a hard fit Black Heart Bart first up is no easy feat and he’ll get better out further in trip. Set out as a $17 chance for his second Australian start (drifting from $11), he almost looked home before Bart let rip though the middle of the track. It seems like punters are not willing to let him go round at a quote like that again as the son of Deep Impact is now $26-$15 for the Queen Elizabeth and slashed from $51-$26-$15 for the Doncaster. The Queen Elizabeth has been the long-term target but Winx may cause the Doncaster to look a bit more enticing. Play the futures with caution here though as the former Japanese galloper won’t want much sting out and Sydney has a knack of turning on the water works for the big race days of late.
