Find the right horses for your blackbook from Flemington on Saturday

Mon, 6 Mar, 12:00 AM

In contrast to Sydney, good weather ensured the track was in the good range at Flemington on the weekend. On top of the ground with the rail in the true position yielded fast times throughout the day.

There was a very evident rails bias during the card due to the irrigation lanes. I believe it will pay dividends to follow those who have overcome the bias and ran on from out wide.

From our black book, Hey Doc got up to win the major event on the card, whilst Portman ran on strongly against the bias to record a very close second.

Prior to our black book selections, I must say Heatherly ($1.80) was stunning back into her favourite leading roll whilst ANEHIEM ($26-$15 for the Australian Derby) and SNITZSON ($101-$51 for the Australian Derby) are definitely ones to follow out of the guineas, both running on strongly late at huge odds.

2YO SELECTION – CARIBBEAN PEARL: Started as the $61 outsider of the field on debut in a listed race and as such there wasn’t too much money around for the grey daughter of Barbados.

She settled down last in the run, never quite settling for in-form jockey Damian Lane or getting to the rail (best ground). But when Lane shook the reigns she responded greatly, running a 10.92s final 200m to finish 4th, only 2L off the eventual winner (1.6L behind smart Madeenaty).

She never really looked a winning chance so she wasn’t fully tested over the concluding stages in the worst ground, which gives her plenty of up side. She won’t stay a maiden for long and staying out of the placing’s might give her a nice weight edge next run.

Record: 1:0-0-0

That was an impressive debut! Ploverset nabs stablemate Madeenaty late to salute in Race 3.

Where to next? 2YO: 1000-1200m

3YO SELECTION – ROCKSTAR REBEL: Another one who ran well at a big price in the final race of the day. Unwanted by punters: $21-$31 who knew the pattern of the day by this stage.

The colt defied the drift and powered on late from well back in the field and well off the rails for a good 2.6L 4th. Eventually clocking a swift 12.05s final 200m, only 0.08s slower than swooping winner Mr Sneaky who had the better ground.

They did go hard for the majority of the 1400m journey, with D.Dunn on Tribal Wisdom not wanting to let L.Currie on Theanswermyfriend get away with any cheap sectionals early. Hence the race was set up for the swoopers, but not those working out wide.

Given the fast tempo over 1400m, I believe this colt could step out to the 1600m and be competitive. Especially given he is still only a 65 rater on the Victorian benchmark. If he is to drop back down in grade he’ll be winning but he could definitely run well again in open class.

Record: 5:1-1-1

Mr Sneaky and @CWilliamsJockey get up in the last stride in a dramatic finish to the last at #Flemington.
