Racing was at headquarters last weekend and after a rest the track was looked in pristine condition and raced accordingly. Of the straight races, both the inside and outside fence contingents seemed to have their chance, whilst of the races around the bend running on didn’t seem a problem.
Hoping a fair track yields some trustworthy form moving forward into the winter months.
As for our black booked runners, Extra Zero was back at long odds $26-$18 in the first and produced a sound effort to run 6th off the back of an un-suitably slow tempo over 1800m. The old boy should be returning something to the punters soon.
Our other Saturday black booker Malibu style was narrowly edged out (0.3L) in a 2.35L turn around back to the 1000m by sword of light. Showed enough to suggest sticking with him after his first run down the straight.
RIGHT CAMP SELECTION – STEGGLER: This imported galloper couldn’t quite end what was a phenomenal week for Australia’s premier trainer D. K. Weir on a winning note. Running 4th in the final event on the card over a mile.
After opening close to double figures, the lightly raced 5YO was crunched into a $3.90 favourite by the jump. Hence by running 4th he might owe some punters a win, but I don’t think the pay-back is too far away.
After being a touch slow out, B.Rawiller placed the former UK galloper some 9L off what was a strong pace. He moved out into clear running at the turn and raced up from the 300m before his condition seemingly gave out over the final 100m.
Given he looked in the yard to be able to derive improvement from the run, he should take a power of beating over a similar trip next start. Especially if he can jump with them and running on is no issue.
SECOND AUS PREP SELECTION – COLDSTONE: After what was a somewhat lacklustre first Australian preparation, Mick Kent certainly seems to have this French galloper back and ticking along very nicely.
He was another that was a touch slow out from a wide barrier 10, so that he settled 3 wide mid-field for most of the trip. Worked home very well to make up some 4L from the point of the turn to finish a close 0.2L second to (former black booker…) Inspector.
The bunched finish and plethora of hard luck stories (Pure Pride still giving plenty including myself nightmares) must invoke some legitimate queries over the form out of the race. But for what was a $41 chance, take the punt!
