DAY RACING HORSES TO FOLLOW: CAULFIELD: 01-07-2017
Caulfield played host at Saturday’s racing and punters were once again treated to a fair surface, which gave every runner its chance. A slight advantage to those on pace if anything, but there was next to no preferred part of the track as evidenced by Radipole’s ($12) win along the rails in the last race of the day.
It was a mixed day for our black book with Coldstone getting the money in race 3 at the respectable price of $6.10. Ever-consistent mare Grey Street then followed this with a 0.75L second in Race 5 at each way odds of $7/2.10.
The joy stopped there somewhat as Violent Snow was disappointing finishing 2.25L 8th after being well backed into around the $7-$6.50 mark. One more form her. Same cannot be Heza Ripper who’s had his chance now, whilst Zara Bay out of the same race does her best racing first and second up so I’d probably like to see her freshened before investing again. Likewise, Overberg who has had his time this prep.
The biggest disappointment of the day however was Niminypiminy, sent out at $9.50 and seemingly not tested at all in the straight in a leader dominated race. Gun hoop Mertens said she didn’t feel comfortable racing inside other runners. Can’t forget on the back of that valley run.
MILER SELECTION – PORTMAN: Finished off very nicely into 3rd after settling mid-field over an un-suitable 1200m journey. The starting price of $6.50 depicted the gelding’s raw ability as plenty of punters would remember the stylish way he moved through the grades in the summer months over further.
Some punters may have been burned before as he was beaten at $2.90 and $2.25 in his final runs last prep. But his record suggests he’s extremely consistent and I’m sure there will be a chance to get those investments back when he steps out over a mile this time in (or even 1400m with a tempo).

3YO STAYER SELECTION – ALL OUT OF LOVE: Was really taken by the way this gelding worked home off what was a very unsuitable tempo. Flopped out of the gates about a length behind the field to settle on the rails about 5-6L off the speed but worked home in slick time: 12.03s, 11.66s, 11.86s last 3 furlong splits to finish third.
I’ll be taking the punt he’s come back a much-improved galloper this preparation (ran 15th in the Vic Derby at $201) and having been sent out a $26 chance last time out we might get a good price to find out.
