Doomben fronts up for yet another meeting with the rail out 10.5 metres to protect it for Saturday's Meeting. The track has taken a pounding in recent years but is holding up well. But with rain forecast it will probably be a day for front runners or at least those on the pace.
QUADDIES (races 6,7,8,9)
Skinny Play: 4,10/1,6/6,7/4
Wide Play: 4,7,10,11/1,2,3,6/2,6,7,12/1,4,5,7
BEST BET: R9 – 4. CAPITAL CONNECTION
Next Best Bet: R1 – 2. BINARY
Best Roughie: R4 – 6. CATALINA MISS
No2 BINARY (NEXT BEST BET) He doesn't win many races but usually about the place and if he is ever going to win again this is it. Has been placed at his past three starts in stronger races than this.
No1 SKILLFUL Sydney form was solid for a race like this and only start this area was a handy fourth at the Gold Coast. Small field here suits.
No3 SWEET SHAMROCK Had good form last campaign and showed he was getting back near that with last start second at the Gold Coast. It was good enough to win this.
No7 BILBERRY STAR He will be big odds here but recent form okay and if it was to rain heavily he is a good wet track horse in heavy going.
VALUE RUNNER: No3 SWEET SHAMROCK
No1 MUDGEE ROAD We say it every week about Brisbane staying maidens but they are never strong. At least Mudgee Road has been placed three of past four starts and looks to have strong claims in this weak affair.
No2 INVERARAY Looks one of the few other chances on form which includes two seconds at past two starts. Looks as though 2000m will suit.
No4 ASALWAS Plodded away at Grafton last start when third over 1600m. It was only his second start and should be fitter now.
No6 STREET COMIC He was second in a weak maiden at Ipswich last start but it wasn't a bad run and he was forced to come deep. Each-way here.
VALUE RUNNER: No2 INVERARAY
No6 ROCK ‘N’ SUMMER Well-bred first starter from the premier stable. Has had two trials and won them both so looks hard to beat.
No13 MAJOR LUCK At only start was very well backed but plodded into fifth at Eagle Farm. Has had four trials and shown promise in them all. Respect fresh here. He is an emergency here but should get a run.
SCRATCHED No4 I AM IMPINGE From a leading stable with the top jockey here for debut. Has had two trials and the latest was a strong win at the Gold Coast.
SCRATCHED No1 BUXTON He was big odds when missed the start and came from last to be midfield in a maiden over 800m at Ipswich. Far better suited this trip and not the worst by a long way.
VALUE RUNNER: No1 BUXTON
No6 CATALINA MISS (BEST ROUGHIE) Has been placed this track in much better company and first-up here with a third in a Gold Coast trial under her belt. She will be handy odds and rates highly.
No4 SEQUALO'S SPIRIT Has been entered and scratched a few times lately so making debut here. Has shown ability in a trial win.
No2 JOHNNY WHITESOX He didn't have a lot of luck at only start when second to a smart filly at the Gold Coast. Better for the run and at this distance.
No10 SHES AN EAGER LASS Another first starter who has trialled well winning her latest at Doomben. Must have some claims here.
VALUE RUNNER: No6 CATALINA MISS
No5 I'M JUST PINK This isn't very strong and his second at the Sunshine Coast and his good barrier here give him a winning chance.
No10 LAKOUDIS Rarely do you see a maiden who has had 18 starts and you could say he has been unlucky in 14 of them. Good second at Ipswich last start and surely luck will go his way one day.
SCRATCHED No4 HAROLD VICTOR Again started big odds last start at second run back from a spell and got left in front and in the worst part of the track at the Gold Coast. Give one more chance here.
No1 HALLSIDE REBEL First-up here and on his best form would win this drawn wide and his two trials have been just solid. Still has claims here.
VALUE RUNNER: No10 LAKOUDIS
SCRATCHED No4 SKY TEAM Another ordinary standard maiden and one wonders why it is first leg of the quaddie. But Sky Team has shown enough in some trials to be hard to beat here from barrier one.
No7 HEART OF AUSTRALIA She has been a heart breaker for punters with minor placings at nine of her 11 starts. She will again be among the favourites and as we said about All Pluck last week eventually she must win one of these.
No11 TAUGHT BY THE BEST Has been racing well in central Queensland and this isn't much harder.
No10 SEE MIRACLES Has been minor placed a couple of times and if she could reproduce her trial form she would win better races than this.
VALUE RUNNER: No10 SEE MIRACLES
No6 MY GIRL HAYLEY Believe it or not she was once rated a Golden Slipper hope. Never reached anywhere near those heights and last campaign was ordinary. But on her recent trial win at Doomben she might be in for a good campaign, starting here.
No2 LA DOLCE VITA She is another who has never lived up to the wraps on her. But she is very fast and now in a top stable. She has had two trials to get ready for this. Respect.
No1 MISHANI SLEUTH He has raced in some very good races and never been disgraced. Resuming here and impressive Doomben trial winner recently beating some top horses.
No3 GOOD TO BE GREAT Racing in career best form with a win and three minor placings past four starts. Each-way again here.
VALUE RUNNER: No1 MISHANI SLEUTH
SCRATCHED No6 BERGERAC Started big odds but easy Toowoomba winner at third race start when beat a horse who has since won. This is only a fair field and has high hopes again.
No7 LEDOYEN His form is good enough to test this field. Won two starts back at the Sunshine Coast and another who didn't like the rock hard Rockhampton track when fourth there last start.
No12 ALPENGLOW Has won her past two starts at Dalby and Toowoomba. This is harder but not by much so has each-way hopes.
No2 WHAT'S THAT Hasn't run since winning in Lismore in February. Has trialled solidly for comeback but weight is the main worry.
VALUE RUNNER: No12 ALPENGLOW
No4 CAPITAL CONNECTION (BEST BET) Usually we wouldn't tip a horse which won its first start and was stepping up to a Class 2 as a special. But he won his maiden by nearly six lengths and it could have been ten. Looks very smart and some of these are not.
No1 DEVIL'S FIRE Ran second at all five starts at last campaign. In fact has nine career seconds and two wins to his credit. Has had two trials in preparation for his comeback and to say he is always an each-way chance is an understatement.
SCRATCHED No5 PINCH MOUNTAIN Good winner at the Sunshine Coast before last second in Rockhampton. Consistent and deserves thought.
SCRATCHED No7 PLUCKY GIRL Never runs a bad race but starting to get expensive after another second at the Gold Coast last time. Still must be respected.
VALUE RUNNER: No5 PINCH MOUNTAIN
