The words Winx and maiden aren’t often muttered in the same sentence. However, this morning the great mare has broken her trial maiden at Royal Randwick in heat 1 over the 1000m.
Jumping well, Winx settled down around third from last. Travelling in typically nice fashion throughout, she was eventually asked for some effort up along the very inside as trial leader Stampede drifted slightly from the markers. She put the rest to bed quickly to win by a length on the line.
Not that there was any doubt prior to this trial, but she looks to be going as well as ever. Injury-free, her name is as good as etched into the Cox Plate already.
Of the others, new 3yo Pariah was impressive hitting the line strongly under minimal riding for second. Pariah is touted as the current leading contender for his owner James Harron’s Everest slot and certainly lived up to his 2yo credentials this morning.
Happy Clapper was also caught the eye. After sitting wide, he was allowed to find his stride late in the piece, working nicely down the very outside late. Worth following him again this preparation.
