With the AFL football final on Saturday between Adelaide and Richmond, Victoria’s feature racing switches to Friday night at Moonee Valley.

The Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) has attracted a high-class field of sprinters, with Russian Revolution having his shot at gaining a berth in the Everest with a critical win at the elite level.

The eight races are all high-grade and most competitive as the spring rolls on towards the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

The false rail will be at the four-metre position and the track should be perfect for the first night meeting of the spring. Rated as a Good 4.

Unfortunately, rain is forecast and it will be cold, so keep an eye out for a downgrade of the track rating.

Best Roughie: R7 – 4. ROCK MAGIC

R1 – 6.30pm. Sporting Globe 3yr C&G Plate – 1200m.

No1 KOBAYASHI was having his second start back from a spell when finishing a solid sixth to Merchant Navy over 1200m in the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield on September 2. Has had several important gear changes, with blinkers off and a tongue-tie and winkers going on. Good chance here.

No4 MURAAQEB was trapped five deep before finishing ninth over 1200m here first up on August 26. Gets a change of rider, with Mark Zahra replacing Michael Walker and from a rails draw should get a nice soft run. He is a well-bred colt and would expect improvement fresh here.

No7 EXPERIMENTATION was scratched from last Wednesday at Flemington to run here. Underlined, he was on course for a big first-up effort with a strong win in a 990m trial at Cranbourne on September 18. He gets top apprentice Beau Mertens to steer from gate (3) and commands his due.

No2 DANGER DEAL is an Adelaide sprinter here for an assault. Broke through for his maiden win with a courageous effort over 1050m in a maiden at Morphettville on September 9. That was his first start back from a long spell and has glamour Victorian jockey Damian Lane to steer here. Keep safe.

VALUE RUNNER: No4 MURAAQEB

R2 – 7pm. Strathmore Flowers Handicap – 1200m.

No8 LABUAN STAR has been in scintillating form, with two wins and a third at his past three starts this campaign. Latest he scored an outstanding 1 ½ len win over 1000m at Mornington on September 13. Dean Yendall keeps the ride and he drops a kilo to 55.5kg here. Expect a strong challenge.

SCRATCHED No14 MODERN WONDER will have a tongue-tie and winkers on for the first time. He was well fancied when finishing a sound second over 1121m at Geelong on September 3. Ben Thompson goes on top here and his 1.5kg allowance drops his weight to a mere 53.5kg. Sure to have admirers.

No12 MILES OF KRISHAN returns to Victoria after a sortie in Adelaide where he ran a strong third in a Group 2 (1600m) at Morphettville on May 6. The 5yo gets top stable jockey Regan Bayliss to ride here and she has an excellent record fresh of a win and two seconds at three starts.

No1 DEMONSTRATE has a rock solid first-up record. Has not raced since finishing sixth over 1200m in a feature race at Swan Hill on June 9. The Godolphin-trained 5yo gets top jockey Mark Zahra to ride at his return and he loves this track, with a win and three placings at five starts.

VALUE RUNNER: No1 DEMONSTRATE

R3 – 7.30pm. Simpson Constructions 3yr F Stakes – 1200m.

No1 HOUTZEN is a Queensland filly who will be improved on her debut at Moonee Valley when finishing a solid third over 1000m in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes on September 9. Top Queensland jockey Jeff Lloyd is down to ride here tonight. She ran fifth in this year’s Golden Slipper and mounts a strong case.

No4 INVINCIBLE STAR is a Group 3 winner who is racing fresh tonight. She has not raced since finishing sixth in the Magic Millions 2yr Classic at the Gold Coast last January. Has heaps of upside, with only two starts to her credit. She has had two trials in Sydney and is primed for an assault.

No2 BROADBAND is a South Australian filly who can show stark improvement on her first-up eighth in the Atlantic Jewel (1200m) here on September 9. She is a Group 3 winner and place-getter and she gets big race rider Dwayne Dunn as her partner from a superior draw in gate (2). Has claims.

No5 FOX SWIFT stakes her claim with a strong win down the straight 1100m in a Listed race at Flemington on September 16. She fought hard to claim the No. 1 spot in a three-way finish that day and she gets top jockey Mark Zahra to ride again. From gate (6), she is one of the better chances.

VALUE RUNNER: No5 FOX SWIFT

R4 – 8pm. 55 sec Challenge – 955m.

No6 SUPER TOO raced in scintillating form to win over 1000m at Randwick on August 19. She went helter skelter that day and she loves this distance, with an impeccable record of five starts for four wins. Ace Sydney jockey Blake Shinn travels down to ride her tonight and drawn perfectly in (1).

No10 MADEENATY is a 3yo F who drops in class on her last start fourth in the Group 3 San Domenico (1100m) at Rosehill on August 28. She has shown abundant speed but is limited to where she can go at her own age and she looks suited in this class against older horses. Has claims.

SCRATCHED No9 MISS VISTA is a baldy-faced mare with four white socks and a lust for the short-course. She is resuming from a 14-week break here and has an envious first-up record of two wins and a third at three starts. She loves this course and with Ben Allen’s 1.5kg carries only 53.5kg. Strong chance.

SCRATCHED No11 ANOTHER DIAMOND loves this track and should go well fresh. She has not raced since finishing fifth over 1200m at Swan Hill on June 9. That was during the Swan Hill carnival and she fought hard that day. She gets top apprentice Beau Mertens to ride from a great draw in (3) and looks value.

VALUE RUNNER: No11 ANOTHER DIAMOND

R5 – 8.30pm. JRA Cup – 2040m.

No4 STAR EXHIBIT will be blindfolded for the first time after he dumped jockey Mark Zahra and raced around without a rider in the Dato Tan Nam (1600m) here on September 9. He gets a change of rider with top jockey Damian Lane taking the reins and is out to give compensation to punters.

No2 JON SNOW struck a high class field when finishing a sound ninth to Humidor in the Group 1 Makybe Diva (1600m) at Flemington on September 16. Down a grade here and won the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) as a 3yr last season. His stable is in great form and respect.

No1 TAVAGO has Sydney’s No 1 big race rider Hugh Bowman coming down to ride. Chased steadily enough to run seventh in the Makybe Diva (1600m) at Flemington on September 16. That will have topped him off nicely for this race and the step back to 2000m will suit even more.

No6 FOUNDATION is an English import who looks ready to fire on his last start 1.7 len eighth over 2040m here on September 9. He was placed third at his prior start over this trip on August 23 from a three-week break. Top stable jockey Regan Bayliss is to ride and would watch here.

VALUE RUNNER: No6 FOUNDATION

R6 – 9pm.Stocks Stakes (4yr mares and older) – 1600m.

No7 I AM A STAR (NEXT BEST BET) gets a great chance to burst back into the winner’s list against her own sex here. She chased well to finish seventh to Sword Of Light in the Group 2 Let’s Elope (1400m) at Flemington on September 16. The extra 200m will be sublime for her and she will lack nothing in horsemanship with Ben Melham riding after a stint on the sidelines due to a suspension

No1 HELL OR HIGHWATER her form is impeccable and out to make it four straight wins here.

No8 MONTOYA’S SECRET is now primed for a big showing with two runs under her belt.

No11 SMART AS YOU THINK loves this track and will strip fitter on her first-up effort.

VALUE RUNNER: No11 SMART AS YOU THINK

R7 – 9.30pm. Moir Stakes – 1000m.

No5 RUSSIAN REVOLUTION (BEST BET) is chasing a spot in the $10million Everest with a win here tonight. The son of Snitzel unleashed a powerful win over Heatherly in the McEwen Stakes (1000m) here on September 9. That was his first start at this track and was at his first start back from a spell. Ace Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman has travelled down to ride at this all-important start.

No13 SHE WILL REIGN is the reigning Golden Slipper winner returning to the track and is ready.

No9 SHEIDEL is the Oakleigh Plate winner and gets Hong Kong’s Magic Man back for another Group 1.

No4 ROCK MAGIC (BEST ROUGHIE) ran a ripper race in the Group 1 William Reid at his last start at this track. Back in town.

VALUE RUNNER: No4 ROCK MAGIC

R8 – 10pm. Stutt 3yr Stakes – 1600m.

No3 SHOWTIME everything did not go to plan when he bounded at the start and crossed to lead before finishing a sound fifth to Royal Symphony over 1400m at Flemington on September 16. That was first start since breaking his maiden at Wyong. Will strip superior for the outing.

No4 MASCULINO has been in blistering form and is in line to claim a hat-trick here after two great wins. Latest was over 1509m here on September 9 when he had to dig deep when challenged for the lead and responded strongly for a narrow win.  Jake Noonan keeps the ride for his effort.

No2 AZAZEL finished on the heels of some classy sprinters when he ran fifth to Catchy in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes down the straight 1200m at Flemington on September 16. That win stands the colt in good stead for his test here where he is up in distance. Has shown class but the 1600m is the query.

No9 WASSERGEIST broke the ice in style over 1400m in a maiden at Sandown on September 6. He is elevated sharply in class tonight but the distance should suit and he gets Sydney’s big race rider Hugh Bowman to steer at his first test at the metric mile. He is from an astute stable and should be watched.

VALUE RUNNER: No9 WASSERGEIST
