Randwick for what is the middle meeting now of the Spring racing carnival. Nine good races on the card here headlined by the Spring Champion stakes for the 3yos over 2000m, how do they beat Ace High? Can they? Outside of that the Roman Consul is a very good race. Track will be good again and rail is +3m.
QUADDIES (races 6-7-8-9)
Skinny Play: 2 - 1 - 2,4,6 - 4,10,11
Wide Play: 2,3,5 - 1,3,6,7 - 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,10 - 4,5,10,11,12
BEST BET: R3 – 3. INTERLOCUTER
Next Best Bet: R2 – 4. UP ‘N’ ROLLING
Best Roughie: R4 – 2. RED KNOT
No7 FRENCH TUNE second-up to 1400m looks hard to beat here, I do love the job that he did fresh knuckling down to run over the top of the leader. There isn’t much pace here as he should be able to jump across and get a soft lead and be hard to beat.
No2 REGENT comes across and gets a good run on the map two pairs back. He has been looking for the bigger track in both of his runs this time in. He brings a good SP profile to this in some races against the older horses and has its chance.
No6 SPARKY LAD should sit just behind the leaders here and was a good winner first-up and the form out of that has stood up well out of that with Kaonic winning on Wednesday. He stays at the 1400m here which shouldn’t be an issue and will be in the finish.
No4 OUR MANTRA gets a sticky run on the map here and Shinn will need to make a decision early as to what he does or he may get posted wide. He was good against Beau Geste last start and that is quite good form.
VALUE RUNNER: No7 FRENCH TUNE
No4 UP ‘N’ ROLLING (NEXT BEST BET) should be able to turn the tables on Alward here after having no luck last start when he needed it. On the map he gets that same run third the fence here and with the smaller field K Mac will be able to roll off the fence approaching the turn and be too strong for them, the weight swing is another advantage too.
No2 ALWARD loses Bowman here, won well last start but don’t think he can beat the toppie again.
No3 VELADERO should roll along to the front here and give them something to chase with no speed in the race.
SCRATCHED No6 SHOCK ALERT next best.
VALUE RUNNER: 4 – 2/3 Exacta
No3 INTERLOCUTER (BEST BET) was an actual winner first-up from a spell, yet somehow lost the race on protest. Punters were very hard done by there. He finds a race second-up with good speed engaged in the race again and should be able to just tag in behind them. I think he can win a nice race in the spring in Melbourne and he should be winning this if he wants to head that way.
No1 HOGMANAY has been going well enough this time in and should run well again for Innes.
No4 GOODWOOD ZODIAC should improve at the second Australian preparation and a mile at home fresh is suitable.
No6 MAPMAKER won well last start and should run well enough again here.
VALUE RUNNER: No4 GOODWOOD ZODIAC
No3 SCHEDULE just missed last start in the Dubbo Cup that was run in seriously fast time and comes out of a good highway before that. The 1600m here looks suitable in a race where there is a lot of pressure and he can sit behind them and charge over the top late.
No10 DIA DE REYES comes out of a good Saturday race last start at Doomben and is my preferred M Dunn horse here. He gets well back on the map here which shouldn’t be an issue with the speed engaged here and could blow them away late.
No2 RED KNOT (BEST ROUGHIE) gets a soft run of it just behind the speed here and has the right man in Collett on board to take those “gutsy” runs up the fence with not much of a gap. He comes out of some good Wednesday races and should be thereabouts.
No4 CASCATA ROSSA is priced this short due to being a M Dunn horse here. He did win well at the Gold Coast, in what was a weak race were the times and figures were quite poor. He maps poorly and could get stuck in the ruck turning from home.
VALUE RUNNER: No2 RED KNOT
No10 SOUCHEZ gets a race run to suit here and gets that smother run where he can explode over them late here. He hasn’t won since winning at Flemington over 1400 this time last year and now that he is fourth up from a spell he can blow them away. One last chance!
No6 SHILLELAGH hasn’t had the best of luck since joining the Waller yard and looks to have come back in good order off the two trials. She loves rock hard going and gets that here as well as the starting point of 1400m she looks well set up here to run well.
No4 DUCA VALENTINOIS was the Scone Cup winner last time in and has been trialing up well coming into the fresh run, I love that he was pushed out to win the 1200m trial in good time to get him fit enough to run well fresh and his fresh record of 6: 1-2-1 is quite good.
No2 BURNING PASSION was just behind Tom Melbourne last start who we all saw run so well in the Epsom, he is the only leader in this race. He has only missed a place at one start at this track and looks a big chance yet again.
VALUE RUNNER: No10 SOUCHEZ
No3 VIRIDINE gets the soft run on the map again here and won in good fashion first-up from a spell and looks to have come back a much better horse this time in. He ran some of the best times of the day fresh and did it with something in hand, he may well be a Coolmore player and I have him priced $1.90.
No2 SINGLE BULLET was unlucky fresh and should have finished a lot closer to Virdine than what he did. The trials coming in were quite good and he has improved as a horse. He gets a sticky run on the map again, but should be much fitter now.
No5 BEAU GESTE won well second-up from a spell, but now comes back from 1300m to 1200m and loses Avdulla? He is a horse that oozes quality, but with Avdulla going with the stablemate over this colt, I cant price him any shorter than $8.
No1 CHAUFFER seems might short for a horse back to 1200m who hasn’t looked like getting close to them over 1200m at any stage this time in. He will get back and charge at them late and may need some more speed on to get over them here.
VALUE RUNNER: No3 VIRDINE
No1 ACE HIGH was just too strong for them over the 1800m last start and the way he ran through the line suggested that the 2000m here is going to be no issue at all. He has always shown that he would be a Spring Champion / Derby player. The only knock I have on him is that I’m tipping a D Payne horse at $3.50 in a Group 1.
No6 DISSOLUTION lost the compass around the turn last weekend and that cost him the win there. Good jockey change with Clipperton on and I love the quick back up to the 2000m as he has always shown that he wanted ground and he gets a soft run from the inside gate.
No7 SULLY gets the blinkers on here and he should improve dramatically. He is a gelding who has only half an idea of what he is doing and the blinkers may well sharpen him up. The 2000m being by Reliable Man will be no issue at all.
No3 TANGLED gets a soft run on the map here, just in behind the speed and wasn’t too bad last week. He looked as if the 2000m would always suit him even when he was a 2yo. Shinn for Bowman isn’t too bad a change.
VALUE RUNNER: No6 DISSOLUTION
No4 DAWN WALL gets a soft run in behind them and looks set to peak third-up from a spell. On face value she was disappointing second-up, but she may well have been flat after the booming fresh run. She now comes into a black type race and with the race shape here, she could well explode.
No6 ZENALICIOUS was a hidden run second-up in the Golden Pendant. She gets a soft run behind the pace here and getting up to the 1600m is going to suit her down to the ground. Les Bridge horses always improve into the prep and this one looks ready to peak.
No2 DIXIE BLOSSOMS comes back to the scene of the crime here. This time last year she exploded away in a similar race and was also third-up from a spell like she is here. Her Randwick record is fantastic, and I want to see something from her, or its life for me.
No1 DAYSEE DOOM won the lead up in brilliant fashion coming in, she just cops everything that is thrown at her. Being 3-4 wide in the run never seems to be an issue and she gets a similar run here from gate 14. As Adkins has to have a few plans in his mind here.
VALUE RUNNER: No6 ZENALICIOUS
No11 CALABASAS has been trialing brilliantly coming into the first-up run and just sits in behind the speed here. He is yet to win first-up from a spell, but has placed twice in the past. The claim for Adkins is handy and he only has the 54kgs to carry here.
No10 PIRACY has come back brilliantly this time in, winning both runs in good fashion. He has had the two kills at the provincials and the midweeks and now finds a good Saturday race to contest. He will sit on the speed here and be in the finish.
No4 FIRSTHAND has a good fresh record here and will come at them with one withering run. The two trials have been pretty good and Clippo will hold him up and charge at them late. The form out of his runs last time in have been quite good.
SCRATCHED No5 VIGILANCE resumes here and did a brilliant job in the first racing preparation winning four from four. The two trials coming into this have been pretty soft, but she looks to have come back quite well and may well blow them away.
VALUE RUNNER: No11 CALABASAS
