See What The Poms Have To Say About Our Cup!
Our friends across the world have a British preview of Australia's biggest race, the Melbourne Cup
Thomas Hobson cut for Melbourne Cup success by 15 bookies.
Just over 37% of bets have been on the Willie Mullins horse winning Australia’s biggest race.
Willie Mullins announced yesterday that Joao Moreira has been booked to take the mount on Thomas Hobson ahead of next month’s race that stops a nation. The Irish trainer came very close to winning the 2015 running with Max Dynamite and will be hoping Moreira, who is widely regarded as one of the best riders in the world, will help him land his maiden Cup success.
It appears both punters and bookies alike agree the booking has increased Mullins’ chances of winning the prestigious race as in the last 48 hours, no fewer than 15 bookmakers have slashed Thomas Hobson’s odds. The Ascot Stakes winner can still be backed at $20 but is already as short as $16 with one bookmaker.
Given the amount of support for the Rich Ricci-owned horse, the odds could be cut even further as we get closer to the off. Since the jockey booking, just over 37% of bets have been on Thomas Hobson winning. He’s been the most backed horse in the race, just pipping Amelies Star, who has received 33% of bets.
Bookies have installed Amelies Star as second favourite for the Cup, behind Almandin who is a $7 shot, the only horse with single-figure odds.
Oddschecker spokesman, George Elek “Frankie Dettori was onboard Max Dynamite in 2015 and, whilst Joao Moreira may not be such a household name in the UK, this jockey booking is no less striking. Punters need no excuse to climb aboard a Willie Mullins good thing, and the booking of the Brazilian jockey has them reaching for their wallets.”
