Betting tips for every race at Caulfield. Today’s best bet is in race 10

Fri, 20 Oct, 12:51 AM

Welcome to the last day of the Caulfield spring carnival with the highlight of the bumper ten-race card being the running of the Caulfield Cup (2400m).

It is not an easy meeting to find winners as the fields are full to the brim of class and it may pay to watch any betting moves and keep a wary eye out for important scratchings.

The Caulfield Cup is a cracker with Australian newcomer Johannes Vermeer all of the rage since his huge effort in last Saturday’s Caulfield Stakes at his Australian debut.

There are many chances in the Cup and some will have to be forgiven for their last starts like Humidor. As always there is plenty of drama in the week leading into the Caulfield Cup.

The rail will be out at six metres and the track is rated perfect as a Good 3.The weather is a shade chilly with a top forecast on only 18C.

Best Roughie: R6 – 2. BURNING FRONT

R1 – 12.15pm. Resimax Group Plate – 1400m.

No6 OUR CROWN MISTRESS Search for win number three at her fourth start here. Has been in sparkling form and by 4.25 lengths over 1340m at Geelong last start on October 4. She drops 4kg to 55kg under the set-weight and penalties conditions.

No3 COUNTERPLAY never surrendered when finishing a fighting second in a Group 3 over 1200m here last Saturday. The Adelaide-trained filly has won twice and been placed second twice at her five starts and carries 55kg again.

No10 SWORN EVIDENCE was an imposing winner at Geelong two starts ago before finishing fourth as an odds-on favourite over 1200m at Ararat on September 26. Gets top jockey Craig Williams to ride here.

No11 NAANTALI started her career on a big high with an effortless win over 1200m in a maiden at Cranbourne on September 20. Gets top jockey Mark Zahra to ride and is not really suited under conditions going up a kilo to 55kg.

R2 – 12.50pm. Polytrack Gothic Stakes – 1400m.

No2 BEAU GESTE is a Godolphin-trained 3yo who ran a good third in the group 2 Roman Consult (1200m) at Randwick on October 7. The son of Street Cry gets hot Melbourne jockey Damian Lane to ride at his debut here.

No3 ÉCLAIR SUNSHINE was scratched from last week’s Caulfield Guineas. South Australian 3yro who ran well to finish fifth to Perast in the Guineas Prelude over 1400m here on October 1. Gets a change of rider with Luke Nolen taking the reins.

No8 LORD SUNDOWNER is in red hot form with two wins on country tracks before coming here. Latest he was backed into a $2.20 before streaking away to a 4.5 length victory over 1400m at Echuca on October 2.

No1 SNITZEPEG gets top jockey Craig Williams as his new rider. Scored a good win in the listed Poseidon Stakes over 1400m at Flemington at the odds of $15. He has been most consistent and from gate nine gets his chance.

R3 – 1.25pm. New Zealand Bloodstock Ethereal Stakes – 2000m.

No6 PINOT from the leading Sydney stable of Gai Waterhouse and Andrew Bott. She broke her maiden status in style at Flemington with her brilliant win in the Oaks Trial (1800m) on September 27. She has the speed to combat the wide alley in 19.

No5 HIYAAM showed she was on the rise with a good second in the Group 2 Edward Manifold (1600m) at Flemington on October 10. The Mick Price stable cleaned up last Saturday’s Guineas and she will be superior for the outing.

No1 ONE MORE HONEY ran a solid fourth in the Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m at Randwick on September 30. Leading Sydney jockey Blake Shinn is to ride the daughter of Onemorenomore at her debut here. Respect.

No10 RIMRAAM jumps in class here on her last start win in a 1755m maiden at Geelong on October 4. But she has finished either first or second at all of her five starts and they have brought Hong Kong jockey Chad Schofield down to ride

R4 – 2.00pm. Ladbrokes Classic – 2000m.

No7 TAVISTOCK ABBEY dug deep to win the Derby Trial (1800m) at Flemington on September 27. He is searching for a hat-trick here after claiming his maiden win at Bendigo in great fashion two starts ago.

Drawn perfectly in gate four in a small field.

No2 CLIFF’S EDGE has been well supported in early betting and gave a good effort to run a narrow second to Main Stage over 1800m at Flemington on October 7. He is capable of turning the tables with John Allen to ride again.

No1 TANGLED is a Sydney colt by leading sire Snitzel. He fought hard when finished second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 7. Top Sydney jockey Blake Shinn rides from gate five and is a good chance.

No4 MAIN STAGE will be out to keep the upper hand on Cliff Edge after beating him over 1800m at Flemington on October 7. He has been racing in great stead and goes up a kilo to 57kg under the set-weight conditions here.

R5 – 2.35pm. Priceline Pharmacy Coongy Cup – 2000m.

No8 SAMOVARE she had to sustain a tough run when challenged midway for the lead in the Group 1 Underwood (1800m) here on October 7. She fought on well to finish only 2.85 lengths behind Bonneval, who is a top fancy in the Caulfield Cup today.

SCRATCHED No11 WHEAL LEISURE is in blistering form with two smart wins. Latest she scored a slashing 1.75 length victory over 2000m here on October 1. She again carries no weight on the limit on 54kg and gets top apprentice Ben Allen to ride.

No5 SPECTROSCOPE was doing his best work at the finish when running fifth in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1800m) at Randwick on September 30. Trainer James Cummings has booked ace Melbourne jockey Craig Williams to ride here.

No10 KIWIA was the beaten favourite in the Murtoa Cup (2050m) when running third to Survived on October 7. He had won three of his prior four starts, including two wins at this track over 2000m and 2400m so would not discard.

R6 – 3.10pm. Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes – 1400m.

No11 DANISH TWIST has finished on the coat tails of some smart types in Sydney. Latest she ran in the Group 2 Gold Pend (1400m) at Rosehill on September 23. Trainer Kris Lees has a good strike-rate in Melbourne and has Hong Kong ace Jose Moreira to ride.

No6 GRANDE ROSSO was caught in a wall of speed when running ninth to Santa Ana Lane in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke (1400m) here on October 1. They went like bats out of hell that day and don't expect the same pressure here. Craig Williams is the new rider.

No2 BURNING FRONT (BEST ROUGHIE) was held up at a pivotal stage last time before finishing seventh over 1400m at Flemington on October 7. He is back to his favourite track here where he has the unblemished record of four starts for four wins. He drops 2.5kg to 57.5kg, which is a bonus too.

No10 ECKSTEIN is a Group 3 winner who gets top Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman to ride here. She lost vital ground when impeded before finishing a close seventh in the group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on October 7.  On that effort she rates with chances here.

R7 – 3.45pm. Harrolds Caulfield Sprint – 1000m.

No1 FAATINAH (NEXT BEST BET) was held tight on the rail in a fast run Group 1 Moir (1000m) when finishing a close sixth at Moonee Valley on September 29. Team Hayes is burning with multiple winners at each meeting and they have booked Sydney ace Hugh Bowman to ride. He has a great second-up record of a win and two seconds at four starts.

No9 SUPER TOO broke a Randwick 1000m record two starts ago before winning over 950m at the Valley.

No8 SNITTY KITTY has speed to burn and in line for a hat-trick here. Very strong.

No10 PROPERTY is a 3yo resuming and his 2yo form was top class. Would respect.

R8 – 4.30pm. BMW Caulfield Cup – 2400m.

No3 JOHANNES VERMEER is an International who caught the eye with a trail-blazing second to Gailo Chop in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) here last Saturday. He is a Group 1 winner at home and the stable have current Melbourne Cup favourite and last year's winner Almandin. He appears to be all class and gets a top run from two.

No2 MARMELO has looked fantastic at the Werribee quarantine centre and is a high class stayer who can make a big impression at his Australian debut. Sydney ace jockey Hugh Bowman has been booked to ride this last-start French Group 2 winner over 3000m. The son of Duke Of Marmalade has had two starts over 2400m for a win and a second and he looks value at $18.00 here.

No11 BONNEVAL is New Zealand’s Golden Girl and has been on fire since coming to Australia. She was held tight before finishing sixth to Gailo Chop in last week’s Caulfield Stakes (2000m) and won the Group 1 Underwood, Group 2 Dato and Group 1 Australian Oaks at her prior three starts. She left home with the NZ Oaks under her wing. Loves the 2400m and has red hot jockey Kerrin McEvoy.

No1 HUMIDOR must be prepared to forgive him for his distant third to champion Winx in the Group 1 Turnbull (2000m) at Flemington on October 7. Astute trainer Darren Weir has gone to his magic bag and put a bubble cheeker on left side and the tongue-tie back on after he hung in the straight. His previous win in the Group 1 Makybe Diva (1600m) at Flemington was outstanding. Has been placed second at two starts over this trip.

R9 – 5.10pm. Schweppes Tristarc Stakes – 1400m.

No1 FOXPLAY should find this much easier than her fifth in the Group 1 Epsom (1600m) at Randwick on September 30. She gets the jockey-of-the-moment Kerrin McEvoy as her new pilot against her own sex at her second start at Caulfield. Was third and second to Winx in the Group 2 Warwick and the Group 1 George Main at her prior two starts.

No2 GLOBAL GLAMOUR was the $3.70 favourite when finished runner-up to Derryn in the Group 2 Arrowfield at her last start in April. She has had two trials at Randwick over 705m and 1050m and performed well in both. The barrier (16) is a drawback but she has an unblemished record here.

No3 SILENT SEDITION is a Group 1-winning mare having her second start back from a spell. There was a lot to like about her fifth in the Group 2 Gilgai (1200m) at Flemington on October 7. She has an excellent second-up record of two wins and two placings at four starts, but gate 18 does hurt her.

No11 COOL PASSION is on the quick back up after blazing her opposition in the Group 3 Northwood Plume (1200m) here last Saturday. The former West Australian mare dug deep and she gets No.1 stable jockey Luke Currie to ride from a good draw in gate eight. The extra 200m is a query.

R10 – 5.45pm. Carlton Draught Alinghi Stakes – 1100m.

No1 FUHRYK (BEST BET) is a Group 3 Adelaide winner who clipped the heels and had no luck before finishing a close fourth to Savanna Amour in the Group 3 How Now (1200m) here on September 23. Team Hayes is running red hot and she looks suited under the wet-weights and penalties conditions of this race on 58kg and drawn gate two. Can end a hard day for punters on a soft note.

No3 NIETA she faded in the Group 2 Premiere, but prepared to forgive. Has top speed and prior form good.

No8 CONSEALER has a rock solid fresh record and the stable is absolutely on fire.

SCRATCHED No9 CRYSTAL FOUNTAIN is unbeaten at four starts and gets hot jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
