Geelong played the host to the feature spring carnival races of the Melbourne Cup and Victoria Derby last time a meeting was held here on October 25.

This drops a long way down from the gala event with eight races consisting of two open maidens.

It is the Victorian country support to the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington, where a big crowd will visit to watch the Group 1 double of the Darley Classic and Emirates Stakes.

The false rail will be at three metres and the track will be perfect as a Good 4. The weather is forecast to be fine and sunny.

QUADDIES (races 5,6,7,8)

Skinny Play:  1,2 – 2,5 – 2,4 – 1,5

Wide Play: 1,2,6 – 1,3,5 – 1,2,4 – 1,2,5

BEST BET: R4 – 2. GERSHOM

Next Best Bet: R6 – 5. ETAH JAMES

Best Roughie: R8 – 3. TEN NUGGETS

R1 – 12.31pm. Moorabool Windfarm F&M Maiden Plate – 1100m.

No9 EMAAN faces a very moderate bunch of maidens in an impossible start to the day to try to find a winner. There is just no exposed form. The filly has drawn one and comes from the top stable of Team Hayes resuming from a 20 week spell. Ran okay at debut.

*SCRATCHED* No5 I AM A UNICORN was well backed into $4.20 before finishing well enough to run fifth in a 1000m maiden at Mornington on October 22. Senior rider Thomas Sadler takes the ride and should be improved for the outing.

No11 MISS HONEYPOT showed good speed to lead before being headed and compounding to run ninth over 1411 maiden over 1400m at Seymour on November 2. Has race conditioning on her side and with the claim has no weight.

*SCRATCHED* No8 COMBATIVE eased in the betting from $3.90 to $5.50 before finishing sixth in an 1100m maiden at Moe back in June. She resumes from a 20-week spell here and gets a novice apprentice to ride, but due to 4kg claim carries only 52.5kg.

R2 – 1.06pm. Moorabool News Maiden Plate – 1300m.

No4 PATRIOT DAY was finishing on strongly first-up to run a good third over 1100m maiden at Stawell on October 23. Damian Thornton keeps the ride and he has drawn well in gate five. Makes good appeal in a moderate field.

No8 YANKEE TOFF resumed from a three-week break with a close fourth over 1400m in a maiden at Pakenham on October 20. Brandon Stockdale rides but cannot use his claim here. The winkers come off and the visors go on.

No10 ROOM TO RHYME was placed at Werribee debut and is resuming here from a 17-week spell. Last start ran a solid fourth over 1618m maiden at Echuca on July 7. Has been placed third twice at four starts.

No2 GABRIEL ran a good third at debut at Ballarat last April. Was then unplaced over 1400m maiden at Wagga on May 4. The Heath Conners-trained four-year-old was then spelled. Did not trial but take on first-up effort at maiden campaign.

VALUE RUNNER: No2 GABRIEL

R3 – 1.46pm. Avis Ballarat & Western District 0 - 58 Handicap – 1300m.

No3 BARMAID FROM WYE battled on well to run sixth over 1300m at Stawell on October 23. That run was off a three-week break and should strip fitter for this encounter. She is known for her strong finishing dashes.

No2 PARTY HOST broke his duck at his fourth start with a hearty half-length win over 1200m in 3yo maiden at St Arnaud on October 28. He was backed heavily into a $2.10 favourite that day. He strikes stronger opposition here, but would respect.

No5 SO DISTINCT gets a considerable gear change with winkers and a tongue-tie going on for the first time. Latest ran a solid fourth over 1600m at Pakenham back in June. Has been given two soft trials over 800m and 990m at Cranbourne for this.

No1 DOUBLE DUX resumed from a three-week break and will have new gear with winkers going on for the first time. Latest was caught four deep before finishing steadily to run eighth over 1100m at Bendigo on October 21.

VALUE RUNNER: No1 DOUBLE DUX

R4 – 2.26pm. Tatchell Transport 0 - 58 Handicap – 1100m.

No2 GERSHOM (BEST BET) had a tough run when trapped wide throughout and had to dig deep to run fourth over 1200m at Pakenham on October 14. Has been freshened up for his return to the short course today and drops a half-kilo to 595kg. Hails from the leading stable of Robbie Griffiths and is drawn to gain a soft run on the rail.

No1 ANY GIVEN BENDER has a short seven-day back up and the blinkers go back on.

No5 LAYNE’S STAR has been consistent at this track without winning. Will be fresh back from a break.

No4 DRAGON ARTIST was well backed but did not leave the gates last start. Keep safe.

VALUE RUNNER: No4 DRAGON ARTIST

R5 – 3.06pm. Cornerstone Rosebowl – 1400m.

No2 GOLD BLUSH is from the leading stable of Darren Weir and has been freshened with a four-week break into this race. She had a torrid run when at $5.50 and finished eighth over 1600m against her own sex at Bendigo on October 10. This is easier.

No1 MRS GARDENIA kicked off her new campaign with a win at Mornington before finishing a good second over 1400m against her own sex at Cranbourne on October 15. She has been kept fresh for this race and looms as a leading chance.

No6 FASTLANE TO HEAVEN the addition of blinkers could help. She ran a close seventh over 1400m at Hamilton on October 29. She drops 1.5kg to 57.5kg for her first start at this track and from barrier four should get a nice run in transit.

*SCRATCHED* No8 PATIENT the addition of a tongue-tie for the first time and having a crossover noseband fitted again may help. She ran a solid fourth over 1203m at Yarra Valley on October 28. She is down a kilo to 56kg and Jessica Payne rides again.

R6 – 3.46pm. bet365 Handicap BM70 – 2218m.

No5 ETAH JAMES (NEXT BEST BET) has been racing in splendid form with smart wins over 1600m and 2000m at Mildura and Ararat prior to running a strong fourth over 1875m against her own sex at Kyneton on October 17. She gets ace jockey Linda Meech to replace a 3kg apprentice and she drops in weight to 56.5kg. Strong chance.

No1 GREAT LANE defied his odds to run a top third in the Hamilton Cup and would respect here.

No2 ROMANESQUE is chasing successive wins here and gets a firm track to race on.

No4 THE DONCHESS has been as consistent as a Swiss watch and keep her safe here.

VALUE RUNNER: No4 THE DONCHESS

R7 – 4.26pm. Ballan Community Bank Cup – 1500m.

No2 STRIKE FORCE narrowly missed the major prize first-up when running second over 1200m here in the Dual Choice on October 25. Has an impressive second-up record of two wins and a third at five starts. Loves this track and jumps from three.

No4 GOLD FIELDS was easy in the betting at $6 before finishing sixth over 1500m here on October 25. Her drops a massive 4kg to 56kg here and Brandon Stockdale keeps the mount. Won over 1500m at Mornington at his prior start.

No1 DYLANSON finished seventh in the Country Cup Final (1600m) at Moonee Valley on October 27. Gets back to the country here and likes to race on the speed. He will carry 58kg with the 1.5kg allowance of Shane Thornton.

No3 THE NEW BOY has an excellent record at this track of three starts for two wins. Latest he ran ninth in the Dual Choice (1200m) here on October 25. That was way up in class and is better suited here dropping a half-kilo to 57.5kg.

VALUE RUNNER: No3 THE NEW BOY

R8 – 5.15pm. Ballan District Health & Care 0 - 58 Handicap – 1500m.

No1 BROCCOLO punters who backed this bloke last start can get their money back here. He fought hard to go down in a close third in three-way fight over 1606m at Benella on October 31. He is again perfectly drawn in gate two and carries 60kg again.

No5 PACHINO BOY was resuming from a long spell when he ran a great third over 1406m at Benella on October 30. Brandon Stockdale is the new rider but cannot use his claim and must carry the full 59kg. Has won here before and would respect.

No2 LEISHMAN was caught along the rail and battled on steadily to finish a sound seventh over 1400m at Warranambool on October 20. Was an impressive winner at Hamilton four starts ago and is only lightly-raced having his eighth start today.

No3 TEN NUGGETS (BEST ROUGHIE) stormed home to cruise to a 1.25 length win in a 1400m maiden at Hamilton on October 29.  That was an upset result at $101 after opening at $41, but with the 3kg claim of the apprentice he carries 1.5kg less on 57kg.

VALUE RUNNER: No3 TEN NUGGETS
