Betting tips for every race. Today’s best bet is in race 7.

Mon, 1 Jan, 12:38 PM

Plenty of racing to kick off the New Year for punters with a whopping eight-race card back at Sandown on Wednesday following a nine-race card here last Saturday.

The fields look quite even, so suggest that punters keep an eye on any betting moves for a guide.

Does not look to be a day where the winner’s slap you in the face so you will have to do your work and observe racing patterns and betting.

The weather will be sunny and the track is rated perfect as a Good 4.

The false rail will be at the True Position.

R1 – 1.00pm. Sheamus Mills Bloodstock Plate – 1300m.

No8 EL PHOENIX is a three-year-old gelding who commenced his campaign on a good note with a strong second over 1300m maiden here on December 20. That was against his own age and he is against open aged maiden today. Mark Zahra rides again and he is well drawn again in gate three.

No6 BELICHICK is a three-year-old son of Star Witness who showed promise at his trial with a sharp win over 800m at Cranbourne on November 14. He has had heaps of time up his sleeve to improve and gets Melbourne’s leading jockey Damian Lane to ride at his debut. Must respect.

No11 MY MOTHER SAYS won a trial over 850m at Tatura in good style before debuting with a solid fourth over 1300m maiden at Bendigo on December 13. He was a solid $3.60 favourite that day and he will take heed from the outing. Drawn perfectly in four and senior rider Stephen Baster partners.

No2 MONTEVIDEO was at double figure odds at debut when surprised with a strong over 1100m maiden at Bendigo back in September. Top trainer Chris Waller put him away and has brought him back for this race. Top jockey Michael Walker will ride and he can overcome the alley in gate 10.

R2 – 1.35pm. Chandler MacLeod Plate – 1200m.

No2 CONFLUENCE has been ultra-consistent with four placings at his five starts and deserves a break. Latest he ran a close second over 1400m at Flemington on August 12. He is only a three-year-old so there is plenty of scope for improvement and he does go well fresh. Top rider Damian Lane partners.

No11 THE PARTY GIRL is a second string to Confluence and gives the Caulfield stable a strong hand in this maiden. She made a solid debut with a good third over 1100m maiden at Kilmore on December 19. Gets the bonus of top jockey Damien Oliver to ride today and has the impeccable record of one start for one win second-up.

No12 TYCOON GINA looked impressive at winning a trial over 850m at Tatura on December 19. The daughter of leading stallion Written Tycoon spread out her rivals coasting to a convincing 1.5 length win. She is drawn ideally in gate four and leading stable rider Regan Bayliss will guide her today.

No3 LE BEAU ETOILE is a son of leading stallion Star Witness. He will wear blinkers for the first time after his debut eighth in a 1200m maiden at Moonee Valley on December 15. Suffered some interference and with a clear run today could come into the money. Stephen Baster riding is a bonus.

R3 – 2.10pm. Clanbrooke Racing Handicap – 1500m.

No11 TAGREEDA was heavily backed into a $3.30 first-up when finishing second over 1300m at Cranbourne on December 16. Gets top jockey Damien Oliver to ride today as a bonus and boasts an impeccable second-up record of one start for one win. Drawn ideally in gate five.

No2 MISS ADEQUATE kept on working away to finish a solid third over 1514m against her own sex at Moonee Valley on December 8. Trainer Danny O’Brien has gone for the 2kg claim today to reduce her impost to a more comfortable 58.5kg. Has been a most consistent mare and is a player.

No8 ROSEWEDGE clawed her way to a narrow maiden win over 1100m at Sale before raised in class and running an admiral third over 1200m against her own sex at Moonee Valley on December 15. Jake Noonan keeps the ride and she stays on the same weight on 58.5kg today. Serious contender.

No4 MILLIE THE MISSILE has been ultra-consistent with two wins and a second from her past three starts. She does go up a kilo to 59.5kg on the last-start win over 1600m at Kilmore on December 19, but she has the perfect alley in two to bring her brilliant country form to the city today.

R4 – 2.45pm. Dream Thoroughbreds Handicap – 1400m.

No10 KAPTIVE HERO resumed in good style with a strong second over 1300m here on December 20. He was at $15 that day and he has a rock solid second-up record of three starts for two seconds. With apprentice Chris Caserta’s claim he will carry only 55kg and makes good claims here.

No11 PENINSULA BOY showed he was on track for this with a steady third over 1400m at Cranbourne on December 22. That was his second start from a 25-week spell and should be further improved. Ryan Maloney is the new rider and he meets a similar field today as last time.

No12 WETAKEMANHATTAN could not have made a better debut than when winning over 1300m maiden at Bendigo on December 13. He romped home by 2.5 lengths that day as a $14 chance. He does rise a kilo to 58kg in spite of going up in class. Jordan Childs keeps the ride and respect.

No1 FORTHEFUNOFIT has won at two of his past five starts. He comes to the city with a smart last-start win over 1400m at Cranbourne on December 22. He beat Peninsula Boy that time and they clash again here. Ethan Brown was booked to reduce his impost by 2kg to 61.5kg. Keep safe.

R5 – 3.20pm. Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap – 1200m.

No12 FILLE DE CHARLIE looked most impressive when bursting to the wire with a 2.5 length break on her closest rival in a 1200m maiden at Moonee Valley on December 15. She was at $8 that time and Jordan Childs keeps the ride today where she goes up 1.5kg to 57.5kg. That was first-up from a long spell and room for more improvement.

No9 FREEHEARTED has impressed at her two starts with a fourth and a win. She claimed a .75 length victory over her own sex in an 1100m maiden at Kyneton on December 13. She was backed from $6 into $4.20 that day and leading apprentice Ben Allen is the new rider. But he has no claim here.

No8 OUR CHIQUILLA is a stablemate to Freehearted and gives the Darren Weir camp a strong hand in this mares’ event. With the 2kg claim of apprentice Ethan Brown her impost is reduced to a more comfortable 57.5kg. She won two starts ago at Terang and ran a solid sixth at Moonee Valley last time.

No7 MOUSAI gets top jockey Dwayne Dunn to ride first up here from a 26-week spell. She made a perfect debut with a 3 length win over 1200m maiden on the synthetic track at Pakenham on April 27. She was given a soft trial at Tatura where she ran sixth. Drawn ideally in gate four.

R6 – 3.55pm. United Petroleum Handicap – 2100m.

No8 WHISTLER BOWL (NEXT BEST BET) looks to be a top chance in this race on his win over 1800m in a maiden here two starts ago. He romped home by a comfortable 2.5 lengths that time. He returned her to finish a solid sixth over 1800m on December 20. He was backed into a $3.40 that day and struck some handy sorts. He should find this more to his liking and carries only 56kg with apprentice Chris Caserta’s 3kg claim.

No1 MARCHING ON is chasing a hat-trick following great country wins at Kyneton and Cranbourne.

No13 ABOVE AUTHORITY finished strongly against her own sex over 2000m at Mornington last start.

No15 BONVILLE drops a massive 5kg with the claim of Taylor Marshall to 55kg on his last start.

R7 – 4.30pm. Sheen Group Handicap – 1600m.

No8 TAN TAT TRUSTING (BEST BET) is resuming from a 23-week spell and has changed stables. The four-year-old is now with Tony McEvoy and will wear a lugging bit for the first time today. He was an impressive winner at his second and final start over 1600m here back in June and would respect. The stable’s No1 jockey Luke Currie will ride today but the alley is something of a minor a draw back in gate 12.

No14 MR MONEY BAGS comes here from an imposing maiden win at this track. Looms as a danger.

No1 TENAPPY LADIES has been entered all over the place, but if starts is a definite chance.

No13 SINJAREE was a fighting winner over 1400m at this course three starts ago. Not out of it.

R8 – 5.05pm. Ladbrokes Handicap – 1200m.

No2 CALL ME HANDSOME was plunged into a $2 favourite when finishing second over 1000m at Bendigo on December 17 Apprentice Stephanie Thornton’s 3kg claim relieves his weight impost down to 58.5kg today and the Irish-bred has drawn perfectly in gate five to be prominent.

No9 WRITTEN IN STONE was a very good winner over 1100m at Bendigo four starts ago. Last start finished on the leaders hammer when a close fourth over 1100m at Caulfield on Boxing Day. Faces a quick back up here but is from the Darren Weir camp and top rider Brad Rawiller steers.

No15 BOORADLEY has won and been placed four times at five starts. Latest start he was backed into $3.40 when finishing second over 1000m here on December 20. Liam Roirdan’s 3kg claim helps with the weight dropping his impost down to a comfortable 56kg. Drawn well in seven too.

No14 LUCKY PROSPECTOR (BEST ROUGHIE) went out on a high when winning at Cranbourne last campaign. Was having his second start this preparation when finishing a steady fourth over 1135m at Geelong on December 14. He gets ace jockey Craig Williams to ride off a three-week break. Watch betting.
