Racing Victoria is doing a lot of experiments this summer to see whether new ideas work well with punters. Today’s Caulfield meeting will be held as a twilight event with the first race to start at 4.30pm.
We have seen night racing increased in Victoria over the past two summers with meetings on Thursday and Friday nights each week as RV hunts for a bigger slice of the gambling dollar.
This evening’s meeting will be like a night at the greyhounds with only 30-minute intervals between each race, so punters won’t have time to dawdle and the stewards will be praying for incident-free races.
Not an easy card to find winners as most of the races appear fairly even on paper value.

No2 STEEL OF MADRID was given a breather after last start third over 1200m maiden at Moonee Valley on December 12. Trainer Tony Noonan had him trial where he ran a comfortable second over 900m at Stony Creek on January 9. Noonan’s son Jake rides and is well drawn in gate three.
No1 BEST MAN has been placed second five times at 11 starts. Latest ran sixth over 2000m maiden at Mildura on October 3 as a $3.10 favourite. Resumes today from a 15-week spell and is having his first start in the city. Expect him to be running home and is an each-way chance.
No3 SURFER JOE has been placed twice at four starts. Latest he ran a close third over 1118m handicap at Geelong on January 4. He drops back to maiden class today and he was specked at big odds being backed from $41 into $20 last start. Would expect him to strip fitter as his last start was first-up.
VALUE RUNNER: No3 SURFER JOE
No3 LUCKY CAT was a spirited winner at debut when having to dig deep over 1100m fillies maiden at Bendigo on December 17. She than had no luck when got shuffled back to last and powered home when it was all over to run eighth over 1100m here on January 7. Gets top rider Damian Lane to partner.

No11 STYLISH MISSILE dug deep to win at her debut in an 1100m maiden at Wodonga on September 11. Has not raced since finishing a good third over 1100m at Bendigo on October 21. With Ethan Brown’s 2kg claim her impost will be reduced to a comfortable 57kg and makes appeal against her own age and sex.
No14 CARIBBEAN PEARL was well backed at $4.60 before breaking through for her first win at her sixth start over 1200m maiden at Warrnambool on January 7. Steven Vella keeps the ride and she does go up 2kg to 58kg but she has a superior draw in gate one. This is her second start back from a spell.

He was plunged from $4.80 into $3.70 that day and he is well drawn in gate one today. He gets the 3kg claim of apprentice Liam Riordan to reduce his weight down to 55kg – which is a kilo less than he carried last start. Makes strong appeal.
No7 BORD DE GAIN finished strongly over 1100m here with 59kg last start and with Damian Lane again to ride makes a good case.
