Mornington is the secondary meeting in Victoria on Australia Day in support of the big race card at Moonee Valley on what is a long weekend of racing.
The rail will be set at the eight-metre position and with Mornington set down on the coast the weather will be cooler than in other parts of Victoria. There could be a bit of rain with a cloudy day and a high on 27C forecast. The track is rated perfect as a Good 4 and would expect it to remain there. There are plenty of chances on the eight-race card with some open races.

No9 BLUE JAY WAY pay to forget her last start when she was impeded and checked but still run on steadily to finish 10th over 1600m maiden at Ballarat on January 14. If she gets a clear crack will be in the finish today.
No4 FOX STREET faces a moderate lot here and gets his chance on his debut sixth over 1500m maiden at Cranbourne on January 5. Jamie Mott replaces Jessica Payne and will appreciate the extra ground today. Very mild opposition.
No5 GUEST ran a handy second at debut over 1500m maiden at Yarra Valley on December 22, before finishing a sound seventh over 1600m maiden at Sandown on January 10. Has drawn to do no work in gate two.
No1 EAST WEST was having his third start back from a spell when finishing a sound eighth over 2081m in a maiden at Moe on January 17. He is race hardened and has been over the trip where most of his opposition have not.
VALUE RUNNER: No1 EAST WEST
No7 SARCASTIC looks to be the one to beat here in a moderate maiden after her strong third over 1130m in a maiden at Geelong on September 17. That was only her third start and she drops 1.5kg today to 56.5kg.
No6 RUBYANNA JANE has finished inside the money at her past three starts. Latest she ran a solid third after showing pace to lead over 1200m in a F&M maiden at Cranbourne on January 12. With the 2kg claim she carries 54kg.
No1 HAWKESTONE was backed into a $3.20 favourite when finishing a sound third over 1100m in a maiden at Sony Creek on December 30. He fought hard but he did peak and was entitled to do so. Will strip fitter for the outing.
No4 TIGER TRAP exhibited brilliance at his sole trial when running away to a 2 length win over 900m at Stony Creek on January 9. The three-year-old is the youngest in the field and has drawn the coveted one gate.
VALUE RUNNER: No4 TIGER TRAP
No3 EVIE’S PEARL Looms with good claims if she repeats her last start when finishing a good second over 1150m in a maiden at Werribee on January 13. The three-year-old filly gets experienced senior rider Chris Symons to steer today.
No5 MYLEX has been placed once at three starts and is resuming from a 15-week spell today. Last start she claimed her first pay when finishing third over 1200m maiden here on October 10. She has the experienced Noel Callow to guide.
No7 SHE KEEPS NOSECRETS is resuming from a 36-week spell and has not been seen apart from a sole trial since her last start in May. She coasted home into second over 760m at Cranbourne on June 5 and was put away. Watch betting.
No2 SOUTH ARBOR has been placed at two of his three starts. Latest he ran a solid fourth over 1000m at Cranbourne on January 12. That was on a bog track and he will be back on firmer going today. Drawn well in gate five
No3 AMASTRYKER has been placed at six of seven starts and this looks the race she could achieve her breakthrough. Last start she ran a fighting second over 1200m maiden at Cranbourne on January 12. That was against her own sex but on a bog track.

No4 GLAYVA was caught up in a traffic jam before finishing sixth over 1300m maiden at Sandown on January 10. That was only her second start and there is room for heaps of improvement. Senior rider Nikita Beriman is the new pilot.
No5 INK gets senior rider Jye McNeil replacing a 1.5kg claiming apprentice today. Was having her third start when finishing ninth over 1115m maiden at Werribee on January 13. That was a fair effort and is capable here.
VALUE RUNNER: No5 INK

No1 ALIENATED scored a clever maiden win over 2050m at Moe back on December 15. Last start was raised in class and finished sound second over 2000m at Bairnsdale on December 29. Lachlan King’s 1.5kg claim sees him carry 59kg.
No2 EYES ARE BLUE was a maiden winner over 2224m at Geelong two starts ago before being elevated in class and running a sound fourth over 2640m at Werribee on January 13. With two runs over the journey is rock hard.
No7 CALIFORNIAGRANDCRU is still a maiden at five starts but has shown recent improvement over ground. Was stepped up to 2030m for the first time and ran a solid second in a maiden at Werribee on January 13. Gets a chance.
VALUE RUNNER: No2 EYES ARE BLUE
No3 HARD FAITH was a smart winner over 1300m at Geelong last prep. She had the bar raised when finishing ninth over 1100m at Caulfield on January 7. She is back down in class today and has a far superior second-up record of two starts for a win. She does go up 2.5kg for the drop in class, but has Jamie Mott to negate the weight increase. She is only a three-year-old too.
No1 LET ‘EM HOWL had a horror run last start before finishing ninth over 1425m at Werribee on January 13. Forget she went around and go on her prior performances when finishing second here and at Moonee Valley.
No5 I WRITE THE SONGS (BEST ROUGHIE) lost ground at a crucial stage but rallied to finish a strong sixth over 1400m at Ballarat on January 14. She drops to 57kg today with the 2kg claim of the apprentice and ran a good third here two starts ago.
No2 THIEVING MINX gave a rock solid effort first-up when running fourth over 1000m at Cranbourne on January 12. That was on a bog track and senior rider Beau Mertens replaces a 2kg apprentice with a good alley in seven.
VALUE RUNNER: No2 THIEVING MINX
No2 LADY SEABRING (NEXT BEST BET) is a three-year-old filly who scored a fighting win at Moonee Valley over 1528m three starts ago. She was backed from $7.50 into $5 last start when running on well to finished fourth after being tramped four and five deep over 1400m at Ballarat on January 14. Thomas Stockdale’s 2kg claim reduces her impost to a more comfortable 59.5kg today.
No4 NAVITA was heavily backed into a $2.20 favourite last start but yielded to run last of eight. Prior form was tops.
No1 PENTHOUSE POET the return to the shorter distance is in his favourite after failing over 2025m as a $2.90 favourite.
No3 MACO NAPRET was second-up when finishing a sound sixth over 1457m last start. Respect here.
VALUE RUNNER: No3 MACO NAPRET
No8 MY AIM IS TRUE (BEST BET) was never on the track and fought bravely to finish sixth over 1000m at Cranbourne on January 12. She was caught three deep and lost ground at a critical stage. The in-form apprentice Lachlan King takes over today and his 1.5kg claim drops her weight to a more comfortable 57.5kg. Hopefully she gets a superior run from gate six here.
No7 MESCLUN was narrowly beaten at her past two country starts and looks the danger.
No3 GROGANS ANVIL is far better suited in the country than at his last start at Sandown.
No2 THUMBTACKS won over a 1000m at his last start at this track three runs ago. Makes appeal.
VALUE RUNNER: No7 MESCLUN
