Sabotage – Moonee Valley Race 6: 2nd ($4.20F): Good money around for the ex-kiwi second-up after some key scratching’s. Looked the winner with only 100m left before Seannie ($4.80) sprouted wings late to get up by less than 1L. Laid in slightly after hitting the front so can improve, possibly to 1400m around Caulfield. Still following.
Booker – Caulfield Race 5: 1st ($4.80): Jumped well to get a soft lead, completely controlled the race form there. Racing pattern and determination will take her a long way with prep, will be right in the Oakleigh Plate.
Shoals – Caulfield Race 5: 8th ($2.80F): Well below par performance. Was close enough to a slow pace and found nothing when asked rounding the turn. Restricted room hasn’t worried her in the past, would need a better price to back next time in.
Mr So and So – Caulfield Race 7: 2nd ($21): Brilliant run right up in class to Group 2 level. Was bolting at the turn when the winner Holy Snow ($14) had begun its run. Recorded the fastest last 200m of the race in 11.82s. Likely freshen now, keen next time in.
Levendi – Caulfield Race 7: 5th ($6): Touch slow out from barrier 8 to sit 7L off the speed. Seemed to lack the fitness of the trifecta as they went past with some ease late. Battled on well enough to warrant backing second-up with solid support here.
Star Stealer – Colac Race 6: 1st ($2): Gave the rest of the field a minimum of 5kg and won easily despite the small margin. Loomed up round the turn and Mott only needed to give him one reminder. Can win next start in better company.
This Week’s Black Book Runners:
Single Gaze – Caulfield Race 8: 2nd ($19): It has been well-documented that the C.F. Orr stakes was an extremely messy race with many unlucky runners and only 1.3L separating the first 9 home. However, this return was simply too good to ignore. Settled further back than normal in mid-field and was held up at a vital stage with only 200m to go. Despite this the 5YO mare hit the line with vigour along the rail to just be denied by a world-class galloper in Hartnell ($6). She’s been knocking on the door to take out a big G1 and this could well be the preparation.
Where to Next? Look for to peak come the Australian Cup 10/03 over 2000m at Flemington.
Oxford Tycoon - Warwick Farm Race 1: 3rd ($6.50): Impressed with the way this colt has improved through the trials (won both) to race day. Looked excellent in the yard but being an imposing type, he’ll derive further benefit from the run. Pinged the lids to lead nicely, but just ran out of gas inside the final 300m to go under by only 1L. With fitness under his belt the Written Tycoon colt should give a bold showing around a circuit like Rosehill – not at the top level however.
Where to Next? Listed 2YO 1000m-1200m
Acqume – Warwick Farm Race 3: 2nd ($13): Did extremely well to run a not fully wound up She Will Reign to 1 length first-up over the 1100m. Sat handy to the speed in 4th, peeled out around the turn and looked like she was going to eyeball the G1 winner for a second before class prevailed. Looked excellent in the yard on the back of 2 solid trials for the in-form Brad Widdup stable. 1 from 1 second-up, should be hard to beat next time in.
Where to Next? 3YO Fillies BM75 over 1200m
