Thu, 8 Mar, 10:24 AM

This nine race card is a pip-opener for Monday’s gala Adelaide Cup meeting, where South Australia celebrates by getting a public holiday.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Moon Spinner was super impressive at his debut when obliterating his opposition in an 1100m maiden at at Morphettville on February 17. The son of Sepoy returns in Race Eight and with McEvoy utilizing the 2kg claim of Melbourne apprentice Chris Caserta she looks nicely weighted on 57kg.

The false rail will be shifted out to eight metres after the nine races last Saturday were run at the True Position. The track is rated perfect as a Good 4. The day will be hot with a maximum of 34C after an overnight minimum of 19C.

QUADDIES (races 6,7,8,9)

Wide Play:  1,2,4,5 – 4,5 – 4,9,12 – 2,3,9

Next Best Bet: R7 – 4. LORD TOPPER

Best Roughie: R6 – 9. EQUILAGO

R1 – 12.31pm. Hughes Limousines Handicap – 1550m.

No2 SKILLFUL STEPS looked a good thing last week but was scratched after acceptances. Will stick to him to claim his third win on the trot here after winning by a total of 7.3 lengths at his past two starts here and at Strahalbyn. Gets a cosy run on the rail.

No5 HEAVENLY THOUGHT is a Darren Weir-trained galloper so would respect. Won over 1300m at Sandown two starts ago before finishing a strong fourth over 1400m at Pakenham on March 1. Drops 2kg here to 57kg.

No6 ATLANTICA controlled the race from the front and fought on well to finish second over 1400m here on February 24. Again has no weight with Raquel Clark’s 2kg claim reducing the handicap to 53kg and is drawn in gate four.

No3 BAJAN ran home strong to open winning account in a 1350m maiden at Strathalbyn on February 21. Will lack nothing in horsemanship with Jason Holder replacing Jamie Kah today.

R2 – 1.06pm. UBET Adelaide Cup Monday 12th March Handicap – 2400m.

No2 ZIMBALI showed his opposition a clean pair of heels, when running away to a 4.3 length win first-up over 2000m at Naracoote on March 4. He gets a nice drop in weight with Justin Huxtable’s 3kg claim reducing his impost to 53.5kg

No1 FLYING CASINO pay to forget his last of nine last Saturday and give another chance here. He was never in the hunt that day. He won over 2250m here at his previous start and top jockey Jason Holder is sticking.

No3 MAJESTIC MOMENT with decorated jockey Clare Lindop announcing her retirement this week she will be out to make every post a winner. Way down in class on last Saturday’s eighth in the Lord Reims (2600m).

No5 CASIRAGHI was an excellent winner over 2400m here two starts ago. Latest he ran a fair sixth over 2100m at Gawler on February 28. He gets a big drop of 4.5kg in weight down to the limit on 54kg here.

R3 – 1.46pm. Adelaide Festival of Racing 5-19 May Maiden Plate – 1000m.

No7 IT’S A MYTH looks hard to beat on exposed form in this maiden with five starts for three placings. Has been Group 3 placed and looks the testing material on 55kg and from barrier eight set against mediocre opposition.

No2 TROUBLESOME LAD is a son of Denman making his debut for the leading Adelaide stable of Lloyd Kennewell. He has been kept safe in betting at $9.50 despite running eighth at sole trial over 1000m here on February 22.

No9 M’LADY showed the benefit of time when returned with a good fourth over 1000m here on February 24. The daughter of Reset had trialled well at Murray Bridge beforehand and with 2kg claim carries 53kg.

No5 EPERDUMENT resuming from a 37-week spell and did show some form at maiden campaign when placed once at three starts. She is drawn well in gate three and has been placed over 1300m at this track.

R4 – 2.21pm. Medallion Homes Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate – 1300m.

No3 CHAROSSA converted a trial win over 1000m here to a strong second over 1100m here on February 17. That was his first start back from a 17-week spell and has a superior draw in three today. Top chance.

No10 EXALTED LAURETTA is sparring for top billing here after her great debut second over 1000m here a fortnight ago. With Victorian apprentice Chris Caserta’s 2kg claim she will only carry 53.5kg and is drawn in two.

No8 BLUE MORPHO nearly broke the ice first-up when a close second over 1350m at Strahalbyn on February 21. Was a red hot $1.60 favourite that day and missed by centimetres. Gets barrier one and out for revenge.

SCRATCHED - No9 BOHEMIAN FOREST she fought hard out wide to run a strong second first up over an 1100m F&M maiden at Gawler on February 28. She should strip fitter for the effort and drops 3kg here with the claim to 53.5kg. Gate 16 hurts.

R5 – 2.56pm. Kym Searle's 50th Celebration Handicap – 1550m.

No1 ENKI has been a model of consistency with four placings and a win from past five starts. Latest he ran a close third in a tight finish over 1400m here on February 24. With Chris Caserta’s 2kg claim carries 57.5kg.

No3 CAVALRY GOLD comes to the city off a fighting win over 1350m at Strathalbyn on February 21. Todd Pannell keeps the ride and stays on 58.5kg here. Nice alley in six.

No7 CHAMPAGNE LUCY is a Victorian raider who comes here with two wins and a placing from past three starts at Yarra Valley. Had to dig deep to claw to a narrow win last start over 1500m three weeks ago. Down 1.5kg to 56.5kg.

No6 TAHNEE TIARA has top notch form with two wins and two seconds from past five starts. Latest she found the winner too strong when second over 1700m at Penola on February 23. With the 3kg claim drops to only 54kg.

R6 – 3.41pm. Holdfast Insurance Handicap – 1000m.

No2 JAY JAY D’AR was specked in the betting at debut from $13 into $10 before winning well over 1000m at Moonee Valley on February 16. Bill Egan follows across to ride on 58.5kg in a small field. Must rate highly.

No4 HEART CONQUERED two winners have come out of the field where he ran fourth over 1000m here on October 28. That was the colt’s sole start and he is trained by the astute Team Hawkes so would expect improvement.

No1 MANZALA was a brilliant debut winner here last November. Resumed from a spell with last of four after fading from the leading role over 1000m here on February 24. With the 3kg claim of Jack Mafrtin carries 56kg.

No9 EQUILAGO (BEST ROUGHIE) made a big impression at her debut to trounce her opposition in a 1000m maiden at Port Lincoln on February 18. With apprentice AK Chan’s 3kg claim she has no weight on 52.5kg and pay to respect.

R7 – 4.20pm. James Boag's Premium Handicap – 1400m.

No4 LORD TOPPER (NEXT BEST BET) has been excelling over these courses and was a good winner here two starts ago over 1400m before finishing third over 1400m here on February 24. That last start was off a three-week break and he gets the benefit of a 3.5kg drop in weight to 57kg and Todd Pannell stays as the pilot. He loves this distance and looks a strong chance today.

SCRATCHED - No5 BATTLECAMP won very well fresh and was bouncing off a five-week break last start when seventh here.

No7 AFFRAY gets a 2.5kg drop in weight to 54kg on his last start seventh over 1200m at Moonee Valley.

No1 VICTORY DOWNS with the 3kg claim will carry 58kg and goes very well fresh. Worth noting.

R8 – 5.01pm. Adelaide Galvanising Handicap – 1000m.

No4 MOON SPINNER (BEST BET) showed deft ability at his debut to race away to a convincing 1.4 length win over 1100m in a maiden here on February 17. He was plunged into a red hot $1.75 favourite and he is a product of Adelaide’s leading stable Tony McEvoy. Victorian apprentice Chris Caserta’s 2kg claim reduces his impost to a comfortable 57kg today.

No12 INVINCIBLE AMICI has been a model of consistency and ranges as the main danger.

No9 MISS LABELLE out to chase a hat-trick here and with the 3kg claim has no weight on 54kg.

No13 CAPTAIN CRACKERJAK has been most honest on Victorian provincial tracks and gets Jason Holder to ride.

R9 – 5.40pm. Schweppes Handicap – 1300m.

No9 ICONOCLASM was strongly fancied at $2.80 when scored a brilliant win 1310m at Ararat on February 8. Showed contempt for the opposition cruising to an 8 length win. He is a Darren Weir product and will be at tight odds.

No3 AUTUMN STREET blasted her rivals to score a comfortable win over 1300m here on February 14. She gets Caboche’s 2kg claim to reduce her weight to 57.5kg but barrier 14 hurts.

No13 VIKINGS REWARD has the blinkers going on again and the winkers coming off again. With Raquel Clark’s 2kg claim will carry only 54.5kg and his form at this track has been consistent.

No2 MISSILE BOOM with apprentice Chris Caserta’s 2kg claim will carry 58kg. He is fresh off a four-week break and he was a Cranbourne winner over 1300m three starts ago. Looks an each-way chance.
