The race has continually changed distances. It was run back over 1200m for the first time since Australia converted to the metric system (1972) last year.

DOOMBEN 10,000 HISTORY

  • The Doomben 10,000 was named such after it was given 10,000 pounds purse and was at the time the richest sprinting race in Australia (1950s).
  • From 193441 it was run over six furlongs. 1942-72 was run over seven furlongs. 1973-2016 was run over 1350m. 2017 run over 1200m.
  • From 1933 to 1979 was a Principle Race. In 1980 became a Group 1.
  • The Queensland born champion jockey George Moore won the race five times (1940, 1953, 1957, 1969, 1971) before going to Hong Kong to train.
  • Sydney’s champion trainer Tommy Smith is the most successful trainer having won the race six times (1955, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1982, 1985).
  • Many horses have won the race twice including notables Falvelon (200102) Chief De Beers (1995, 1998), Prince Triala (1990-91), Black Onyx (1969-70). Apache Cat was the last horse to win in successive years in (2008-09).
  • Queensland legend Bernborough won the race in 1946 and other champions to win include Manikato (1979) and Baguette (1971).

 

  • Bernborough is the weight recordholder, when he carried 65.5kg to win. He backed up a week later and won the Doomben Cup and is the only horse to win the lucrative double.
  • Hot Danish (2010) and Beaded (2011) were the last mares to win the Doomben 10,000. Sea Siren was a threeyear-old filly when she won it in 2012.

 

 

DOOMBEN 10,000 FORMAT      

  • The Doomben 10,000 was changed from a handicap to weightfor-age in 1997.
  • Restricted to a maximum of 16 starters. Run in a clockwise direction.
  • Flat Entry is through nomination with the best field selected at final acceptances.
  • The key lead up race is the BTC Cup (1200m) into the Doomben 10,000.
  • The final field is drawn on Tuesday May 9, with the best 16 runners selected through a ballot and discretion.

 

DOOMBEN 10,000 TROPHY

  • The trophy for the Doomben 10,000 is a magnificent engraved gold cup. The race was first contested in 1933, when won by Wallen.
