Randwick for Day 1 of the Championships, what an awesome days racing on the cards we have here, 10 ripping races for us to get into. This day last year we had a horrible bias due to the rain we had in the lead up. But the weather in Sydney has been brilliant, and we will be on a fair good surface with the rail true.
QUADDIES (races 7-8-9-10)
Skinny Play: 1,6,14 - 1,8 - 9 - 1
Wide Play: 1,2,6,7,8,10,14 - 1,3,8 - 3,9,11,16 - 1,13
BEST BET: R9 – 9. KEMENTARI
Next Best Bet: R10 – 1. LUVALUVA
Best Roughie: R6 – 1. ENCRYPTION
No4 LEAN MEAN MACHINE looks to be a very nice horse and got the job done in super impressive style on debut. He just charged through the line and looked to have a lot in hand, big step up here. But he looks to be targeted at this and will run well.
No8 ENBIHAAR comes out of the Blue Diamond last start and has had a trial since. We have seen the diamond form hold up well enough, and she must be over the issue that caused her to miss the Slipper and I have to respect how well Hayes is going.
No7 VENDOME is a well bred colt who makes his debut here, this combination know how to win a big 2YO race and I am not shocked to see him kick off here as the trials show he has ability.
No5 MUNICH was no match for Lean Mean Machine on resumption. But comes to his home track second-up and should have a lot of fitness improvement to come from that and it’s a Snowden runner on a big day, cannot discount.
VALUE RUNNER: No7 VENDOME
No1 HOLY SNOW very good at his first Sydney start, he stays at the mile here and gets a great run of it for Shinn from gate 2 and he will love the open expanses of Randwick.
No3 ASSIMILATE belted them at Canberra, forget who was in it. It was the win of the day coming from well off them and just crushing them. From gate 12 he will have to go back again here, but now we may see the best of him as Team Snowden have figured him out.
No7 DISSOLUTION has come back a new horse this time in for Widdup with two dominant wins since joining the stable. This is a logical next step and his form, from last campaign ties in well.
No2 VILLERMONT can settle that touch closer from the good gate. We haven’t seen the best of him this time in, but he comes back in grade that tiny bit here and it could be the difference.
VALUE RUNNER: No7 DISSOLUTION
No8 DEMERARA has been fantastic in winning her two races this time in, I am a huge fan of her and I like how she has been programmed this time in getting her confidence up in lower grade. She is unbeaten in Sydney and gets a perfect run from barrier 4.
No6 SHE’S SO HIGH flogged them when winning at Flemington last start, she was in the fast lane when winning, but the time for the day did stack up well so she may be underplayed because of the bias? She is a good filly.
No10 CHARLAYNE resumes here and although this is short of her best, her two wins in the first prep were fantastic and she has trialed in good order, no shock to see her blow them away.
No2 FROLIC was a combination of flat second-up / not running a strong 7f. Her fresh run was fantastic and she has been back to the trials and did what she needed to do. Collett will stick hard fence from gate 1 and pick his way through.
VALUE RUNNER: No10 CHARLAYNE
No3 DON’T GIVE A DAMN was awesome when winning the last-gasp qualifier last week, and If Williams is bringing him here to this he must be ready to go. His first-up win at Rosehill was awesome against much better horses than this, if he gets a good enough time on speed, it’s a gap job.
No5 VICTOREM has been going about his work quietly since his fantastic qualifier win and should not be forgotten here. If his mind is on the job, which is the big if, he will be in this race for a long way. He did smash them at Port after all.
No2 CAERLESS CHOICE was somehow picked off by Suncraze in the Scone qualifier. He gets a weight swing on him here and is now second-up and should be much fitter, I can only see him improving big time into this.
No10 ACQUITTAL only gets into this race due to his stablemate going amiss. But the plan from gate 16 will be simple. Go to sleep out the back and charge late. He is a nice horse but still probably six months away.
VALUE RUNNER: No2 CARELESS CHOICE
No2 MASTER OF ARTS was brilliant when winning at Rosehill last start, you never had any doubts in the run as he travelled so sweetly, the step to 2600m shouldn’t be an issue at all. Why isn’t he the fav after winning the lead up?
No8 ALWARD was the flashing light in the lead up race at Rosehill last start when closing off well behind Master Of Arts there, he did get out into the fast lane and ran a good late sectional there. The step in distance shouldn’t be a worry.
No13 ORMITO was just beaten in the Adelaide cup and coming back in distance won’t be an issue at all for him and Weir has given him a trial over the sticks since which he did with Master Of Arts before bringing him to Sydney.
No10 ADMIRAL JELLO was caught in the wrong part of the track last start and still closed off well enough there. He has a horrible draw in gate 16, and I expect Collett to go back to last and pick his way through them.
VALUE RUNNER: No13 ORMITO
No1 ENCRYPTION (BEST ROUGHIE) will eat up the 1400m here. He was good when winning the Black Opal and it took him a while to wind up there, his mother was a winner of the Sires and Champagne so he has the breeding on his side, as most of these are up to 1400m for the first time.
No13 OOHOOD was a massive late closer in the Slipper in a race which wasn’t at all run to suit. The step to 1400m won’t be an issue for her. I just want to see her settle a touch closer in the run and she will be able to put them away if so.
No2 LONG LEAF was in the worst part of the track in the slipper when making a very long wide run there. He gets Kerrin on from gate 2 and he will be able to be closer in the run and be in the thick of the finish.
No6 SEBERATE was run down late in the VRC Sires and looks to roll forward again, his trial since was quite good and he looked to move quite well in his trackwork earlier this week. So he has settled in well.
VALUE RUNNER: No1 ENCRYPTION
No1 ACE HIGH was stuck three and four wide no cover in the Rosehill Guineas and was arguably the run of the race there, as he was only gunned down late there. 2400m won’t be an issue as he smashed them in the spring. He gets a much better run from gate 2.
No14 BELFAST came out of the Tulloch with the best figures of the race coming with a monster close. The step to 2400m looks to be ideal, but Kerrin has a lot of work to do from gate 17 to get a good run in the race.
No6 LEVENDI backs up quickly after a very strong win last week in the Tulloch. He gets a perfect run of the race here from barrier 3 just behind the speed, 2400m is a touch of an issue but I’m backing his class to take him a long way here.
No10 WEATHER WITH YOU will roll forward from the gate again here. Collett may have taken off a touch too early last week as he was all out late. He should be so much fitter for this and set to peak here, its Murray Baker in a Derby, trust his process.
VALUE RUNNER: No6 LEVENDI
No1 REDZEL was awesome when winning the Challenge in seriously fast time. What more can you say about him. He is our best sprinter and the trial between races was quite good as you would expect. From gate 6 Kerrin can lead them, or sit behind something that wants to go stupid.
No8 IN HER TIME was a brilliant winner of the Galaxy and in the run she never looked like losing, this is her time to stamp herself as the horse that everyone said she was last spring. She sits right on Redzel’s hammer all the way here and will get her chance.
No3 BRAVE SMASH has gone to a new level this time in, those that thought his Everest run being a fluke have been proven wrong. He draws perfectly here and gets that soft run that he needs to show that turn of foot that he has.
No10 GLOBAL GLAMOUR rolls forward here and gives them something to catch. Her Randwick record is brilliant and if she gets across easily enough, Clark could be off and gone as they hit the rise.
VALUE RUNNER: No10 GLOBAL GLAMOUR
No9 KEMENTARI (BEST BET) here is his chance to lay his cards on the line and prove how good he really is. He should have won the George Ryder against Winx (yes I said it) Avdulla was way too soft on him there and basically gave him a run. Last time at the Randwick mile he demolished them in the Randwick Guineas. Down to 51.5kg from gate 2, good luck beating him.
No16 D’ARGENTO will carry the 50kgs not the 49 advertised. His win in the Rosehill Guineas was fantastic and he smashed them there. Back to the mile suits here, as he will sit off them and be flying at them late. 2000m back to 1600m is a tactic that Waller has used to win three Doncasters.
No3 HAPPY CLAPPER is going as well as ever this time in and is set to peak yet again in a big Randwick mile. That record stands at two wins three seconds against Winx from six Randwick 1600m mile runs. The weight is no issue as he carried top weight in the Epsom.
No11 LANCIATO is low flying this time in and can reel off some massive sectionals. King knows him so well and gets him into that perfect rhythm. He will be the big closer here
VALUE RUNNER: No11 LANCIATO
No1 LUVALUVA (NEXT BEST BET) will be handling this lot with consummate ease, the step to 2000m before peaking next week into the Oaks is perfect. She won in brilliant order at Kembla last start. She has a big ratings gap on these and I don’t think giving them 7kgs will worry her as she's a big robust filly.
No13 JUNGLE FISH goes in on spec alone here, it's M Kent with a staying filly who ran right through the line last start and she could cause the boil-over if there is to be one.
No3 WEDGIE was run down late in that Kembla race, step to 2000m looks suitable and I expect Clark to roll forward from gate 11.
No4 HARMATTAN was good at the Valley last start when closing off quite well, off her breeding the step to 200m won't be an issue at all.
VALUE RUNNER: No13 JUNGLE FISH
