Autumn Watch: Runners from the 7th of April

Day 1 of the Championships threw out plenty of odd results, making it tough to follow the form forward. But one runner really stamped herself as a serious contender for next weekend.

As the Autumn carnival draws closer, Saturday racing is heating up. We will look to give you an early edge by identifying key runners for the upcoming big races and suggest plays in early markets where available.

Luvaluva – Rosehill Race 9: 1st ($5): Having opened as the early favourite at around $3.80, there was a consorted betting move against this filly from Saturday morning until jump time. An understandable move given she was carrying 7kg more than the field and may not have been at her top given the poor blood count she had last week which forced her to miss a potential run in the Vinery.

Admittedly she got a nice run off the speed sitting around 9th and only got the job done by 0.2L. But to make a sustained move from 8-9 lengths behind the lead prior to the 600m under 60kg with such ease is the ideal pipe-opener going into a 2400m event. Of the opinion she still has room to improve condition-wise given the way she paraded and the fact this was clearly not her grand final.

Record: 10:4-1-0

Targets: ATC Oaks: 14/04: $4.40

Suggested Plays:

Unsurprisingly the market has reacted heavily to her big win on the weekend. We should get better than $4.40 on the day. Hoping for around $5 to go chips in.
