Ancient King looks the goods to add another feature hurdle to his list of credits when he goes around in the Sovereign Resort Galleywood Hurdle (3200 metres) on Wednesday.
Already a winner of the Grand National Hurdle, Ancient King has been devastating at his past four starts when racing under these conditions. His record of late when competing in jumping races has been superb with his combined winning margin topping 25 lengths – and some of those that have been left in his wake are lining up against him here.
He has warmed up for this assignment by competing in Cup and handicap races over distances of 2000 metres and more with his latest effort behind Gallic Cheiftain a nice pipe opener for the Galleywood. Racing on ANZAC Day at Flemington, Ancient King was one of the rank outsiders in the field of nine and although finishing last behind some tough stayers, was only beaten by five-and-a-half lengths.
That performance over the 2530 metres showed that he is ready to go here and is a deserved favourite for the Galleywood.
Out of the Darren Weir barn, Ancient King won during the Warrnambool carnival a year ago and looks set to repeat the dose here with John Allen aboard.
Of the others, About The Journey was brave in finishing second to Honey Steel’s Gold last start and get some nice weight relief off that particular galloper here. Naturally, Honey Steel’s Gold has to be respected after winning by five-and-a-half lengths last start while Two Hats has to be kept safe but we aren’t so sure he is racing as good as he was a month or so ago.
Selections: Ancient King 1, About The Journey 2, Dane Hussler 3, Honey Steel's Gold 4
