Metro racing is at Moonee Valley this week with nine very handy races to punt on. We have come up with a few favourites throughout the day but there are one or two at odds that we think can run a cracking race.
Moonee Valley is a Good 4 with the rail in the true the entire circuit.
QUADDIE PICKS ( 6-7-8-9):
2,4,6,10,12,13 – 1,2,5,11 – 1,7 – 3,9,10
ANJANA has been impressive in her two wins to date and can maintain her unbeaten run in the opening event. The Sepoy filly was forced to sit three and four-wide, with cover, on debut before powering away to win at Wangaratta. She then proved it was no fluke with a hands-and-heels win in Heavy conditions at Ballarat last time out. Has to lump 59kgs but gets barrier one and will be there throwing punches at the finish.
1st: No1 ANJANA 2nd: No10 Goldifox; 3rd: No7 She’s Sensational; 4th: No4 Cosmic Ruby
In what looks a tough race, CRYSTAL SPIRIT is worth a bet here and should get a cosy trip from barrier one. The gelding is resuming and has won first-up previously. Drops in class from his last start where he finished sixth to the highly talented Cliff’s Edge in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes. Has performed well against one of his main dangers in Bel Sonic previously and gets a 3kg advantage in the weights. Hard to beat.
1st: No10 CRYSTAL SPIRIT 2nd: No2 Bel Sonic; 3rd: No1 William Thomas; 4th: No6 I Am Someone
We are backing the Darren Weir stable in this race with MOONLITES CHOICE our on top selection. The four-year-old is first-up since July last year but did warm up for this with a two length trial win at Werribee on May 28. Does love a rain affected track but has won twice on a Good surface previously. Goes well fresh with two wins from three starts and finished behind Merriest and Snitty Kitty in the other run. Hard to beat.
1st: No7 MOONLITES CHOICE 2nd: No3 Creativity; 3rd: No9 Run Gypsy Run; 4th: No1 Hear The Chant
MURPHY’S REWARD has to carry 59.5kgs but if apprentice Lachlan King can get him into a good spot from gate 12, he is worth a bet in this. The five-year-old has been racing well of late with only the talented Inn Keeper beating him last start. Prior to that he finished close up to the likes of Handsome Thief and King River. Has a win at The Valley and is 2-2-1 from 5 starts at the distance. Top pick in an open race.
1st: No 1 MURPHY’S REWARD 2nd: No7 Sam’s Image; 3rd: No15 Strykinglee; 4th: No3 You’ve Been Had
JAMAICAN RAIN has been scratched a few times in recent weeks but looks set to go around a short-priced favourite in this. The Richard Laming-trained runner opened at evens pretty much across the board with bookies but is already into red figures. She was brilliant in winning in the Heavy at Cranbourne last start, thrashing her rivals by six lengths. This is harder though but she still has a manageable 57.5kgs. Was scratched last Saturday at Sandown and was dual nominated this week but taken out of her Rosehill assignment. Short but sweet!
1st: No4 JAMAICAN RAIN 2nd: No8 Miss Clooney 3rd: No2 Hectopascal (NZ); 4th: No13 Brueghelino
Veteran galloper JACQUINOT BAY is worth a ticket here. Has finished runner-up at his past two with one of those against Life Less Ordinary who has been flying of late. Last start he raced behind the leader and followed the rails home only to be beaten by Riyadh that had a 5kg swing on him. Gets Fred Kersley’s claim to drop to 54kgs here and from barrier three should be in the thick of things from the outset.
1st: No4 JACQUINOT BAY 2nd: No2 Akavoroun; 3rd: No6 Tarquin; 4th: No12 Sixties Groove
MY NORDIC HERO has improved at each of his past three starts and gives the impression he is now ready to win. Out of the Chris Waller stable, My Nordic Hero stalked the speed before tracking Caulfield Cup winner Boom Time into the race last start, however, he was no match for him. Despite that, the gelding beat the rest of the field easily and with 54kgs on his back is a definite chance to go one better in this line-up.
1st: No11 MY NORDIC HERO 2nd: No1 Lite’N In My Veins; 3rd: No2 Pilote D’essai; 4th: No5 High Church
Is there anything that can stop ICONOCLASM making it four on the trot? Well, we don’t think so. This colt is absolutely flying and lumped 58kgs to win at his past two starts, doing a stack of work two runs ago to win at Flemington. Has 59.5kgs now but Ethan Brown has ridden him to win at his past two and knows the horse well. We are banking on the pair to continue their winning ways.
1st: No1 ICONOCLASM 2nd: No7 Andaz; 3rd: No12 Woulda Thought So; 4th: No16 Limekilns
We are banking on INN KEEPER (BEST BET)*SCRATCHED* to do the job in the final event on the card. The Symon Wilde-trained runner has been sensational in notching a hat-trick of wins, the latest of those at Caulfield when he worked overtime but was still too strong. Barrier 15 is a concern but he has shown that he can race anywhere and do a bit in the run and still win. Looks a progressive type and the 56.5kgs shouldn’t worry him.
1st: No9 INN KEEPER *SCRATCHED* 2nd: No10 Wise Hero; 3rd: No3 Ashlor; 4th: No6 Leodoro
