Doomben Racing Preview & Tips - Saturday 9th June
The UBET Stradbroke Handicap is the feature event on a cracking meeting at Doomben.
It’s the last day of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and what a cracking day of punting we have in store with eight races on the card. Of course, the feature is the Stradbroke Handicap and there is plenty of value to be found in the race. Meanwhile, a quick look at some of the other features suggests it could be a fat day on the punt should the shorties get beaten!
Doomben is a Soft 6 with the rail in the true the entire course.
QUADDIE PICKS ( 5-6-7-8):
1,2,7,9,15,16,17 – 1,2,5,11 – 1,2,9,11,16 – 1,2,3,5,7,8,9
Race 1 – 11.45am Makers Mark Hinkler Handicap 1200m
Whichever horse you fancy you are going to find value about it. This is a wide open affair and we are going with one at double figures – TOO GOOD TO REFUSE. The Desleigh Forster-trained runner is resuming from a six-month break but has an excellent first-up record and is a winner on soft going previously. Is drawn the rails and should be finishing off hard.
1st: No6 TOO GOOD TO REFUSE 2nd: *SCRATCHED* No7 Havasay; 3rd: No11 Sony Legend; 4th: *SCRATCHED* No5 Gracida
Race 2 – 11.46am Mullins Lawyers Grand Prix Stakes 2200m
Taking a chance with HOPFGARTEN here. The seven-year-old has had three runs back from a spell and should be at or near his peak. Last start he sat outside the speedy Sheiswhatsheis, who he faces again here, and only got tired the last little bit in finishing 2.15 lengths in arrears. Has drawn barrier five and should be close enough to them on the turn. Value player.
1st: No2 HOPFGARTEN 2nd: No14 Sheiswhatsheis; 3rd: No5 Ecuador; 4th: No11 A Shin Rook
Race 3 – 12:55pm Ascot Green Queensland Guineas 1600m
PEACEFUL STATE (BEST BET) is the class runner of the field and as such we are sticking with him here. The Darren Weir-trained runner has been sensational in winning Listed features in Adelaide over the past month-and-a-half, settling near the rear on both occasions before producing a powerful finishing sprint to overwhelm his rivals. Chances are he will be back in the second half of the field again despite coming up with gate six. Did run second in an Australian Guineas back in March. Top pick.
1st: No1 PEACEFUL STATE 2nd: No2 Assimilate; 3rd: No3 Sambro; 4th: No7 Seaway
Race 4 – 1.35pm Pages Event Hire Brisbane Cup 2200m
AMBITIOUS (NEXT BEST) looks nicely placed in the Cup race. The Japanese import has been knocking heads Almandin, Winx and Comin’ Through at his past three starts in which he has placings in two of those. His second to Almandin in the Tancred was great and he never got a clear crack at them in Comin’ Through’s Doomben Cup last start. Although is lumped with 59.5kgs, he is without doubt the class runner of the field.
1st: No1 AMBITIOUS 2nd: No3 Kiwia; 3rd: *SCRATCHED* No2 Megablast; 4th: No5 Sedanzer
Race 5 – 2.15pm UBET Stradbroke Handicap 1350m
CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES looks perfectly placed to take out the Group One this afternoon. The three-year-old filly will only carry 50kgs and meets Impending 3.5kgs better off for their meeting in the Kingsford-Smith a few weeks back where she was wide throughout. Drawn barrier one, she is likely to get a cosy run and blessed with a brilliant turn of foot, expect her to be hitting the line hard. The one to beat.
1st: No16 CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES 2nd: No1 Impending; 3rd: No2 Santa Ana Lane; 4th: No7 Foxplay
Race 6 – 2:55pm Jaguar Land Rover J.J Atkins Plate 1600m
We are tipping ZOUSAIN to turn the tables on his stablemate Lean Mean Machine in this one. The lesser fancied of Chris Waller’s trio, with the other being favourite The Autumn Sun, Zousain seemed to appreciate the soft conditions two starts back when taking out the Champagne Classic in fine style. Led and was mowed down by Lean Mean Machine last start but with a Soft track here, it could play into his hands. The big negative is barrier 14 though.
1st: No2 ZOUSAIN 2nd: No5 The Autumn Sun; 3rd: No1 Lean Mean Machine; 4th: No11 Fundamentalist
Race 7 – 3:35pm Channel Seven Queensland Derby 2200m
Don’t give up on DARK DREAM. The Kerry Parker-trained gelding was a beaten fav last start against many of his rivals here, however, he twisted a shoe in the run that ended up giving him severe discomfort. Despite that he finished third to Heavenly Thought. Go on his win two starts back at this rack by four lengths – and it was on soft going. We are getting value for him this time around and it should pay to stick.
1st: No1 DARK DREAM 2nd: No2 Heavenly Thought; 3rd: No11 Lucky For All; 4th: No6 California Turbo
Race 8 – 4:15pm Bundaberg Rum Dane Ripper Stakes 1350m
Wow, what a way to end the day! The mares race is a dartboard job where you can pick 10 horses and still miss the winner. PROMPT RESPONSE is our on top selection and a look at her recent form suggests she will be hard to beat. Her last start was in the Group One Queen of the Turf when she beat all bar Alizee. Prior to that she worked hard in the run to beat Oregon’s Day in the Emancipation Stakes and that galloper went on to win the Hollindale. Has been given a freshen up and did finish second in a recent trial Rosehill. Big negative is barrier 16 but otherwise she is all class and can work in the run.
1st: No1 PROMPT RESPONSE 2nd: No9 Moss Trip; 3rd: No11 Invincibella; 4th: No5 Pedrena
