As winter racing goes we are still looking at wet tracks, however, Hawkesbury has thrown up a decent surface and as a result we have two selections from that venue today. The other, and our best of the day, appears in the final race from Warrnambool so it will be a bit of a wait – but hopefully worth it!

Hawkesbury is racing on a Good 4 with the rail out 3m from 1300m-400m, then true the remainder.

Warrnambool is racing on a Heavy 10 with the rail out 9m the entire circuit.

Race 5 (Hawkesbury) – 2:35pm McKenzie’s Food Services Maiden Plate 1300m

MASCOT led and weakened to finish out the placings when resuming from a spell at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago but does look well placed to give this an almighty shake here today. Will strip fitter second-up and will be the one they all need to run down. Trainer and jockey have a good strike rate when combining. Hard to go past - sticking with him.

Race 7 (Hawkesbury) – 3:45pm Pacific West Foods Aust Class 2 Handicap 1600m

Lightly raced Pierro gelding TOROSO has drawn to get the run of the race and will make his presence felt here today. Beaten by less than 2 lengths at Newcastle last start when three-wide for most of the trip so the effort was full of merit. Won by two lengths at Hawkesbury a month back and if he brings that form here he will be hard to beat. Key player.

Race 9 (Warrnambool) – 4:00pm Swich Rentals Benchmark 64 Handicap 1400m

NIGHT FALLS (BEST BET) hasn’t had a great deal of racing but does look hard to toss in this. Just failed last start at Geelong, going down by a neck and can atone for that narrow defeat today. Trainer Darren Weir and Damian Lane combine here and they have proven to be a lethal combo throughout the season. The draw (11) could turn out to be an advantage if they are looking for the outside rail leading into the straight. Will be in this for a long way and looks hard to beat.
