2018 Chelmsford Stakes Preview
Don’t discount Godolphin for Group Two success – Trainer James Cummings has three interesting runners in the feature event of the day in Sydney
It’s not every day you see Godolphin runners go around at value in a Group race but that is exactly what is happening at Randwick this Saturday in the Bisley Workwear Chelmsford Stakes (1600 metres).
James Cummings will saddle up three runners with their average price being a whopping $50! It’s Somewhat, Mr Moonlight Magic and Allergic will all be carrying the hopes of Godolphin and certainly, for the first two, they are a definite chance of getting into the money.
It’s Somewhat ($16*) is resuming but loves the track and distance. The Randwick mile is the scene of his greatest triumph when he led throughout to win the 2017 Doncaster and his fresh record indicates he could play a part in the finish. He has warmed up for this with a trial at Warwick Farm and Rosehill, the latter being a good effort when third to Tom Melbourne over 1030m on August 20.
Mr Moonlight Magic ($9*) is an interesting runner as he is having his first start in Australia.
A winner first-up previously, the six-year-old has form around Johnannes Vermeer last preparation but it’s been nearly 12 months since he competed. Cummings has given him two trials leading into the Chelmsford with the latest of those behind Mister Sea Wolf seeing him beaten less than two lengths after being last for most of the 1250m.
Finally, Allergic ($126*) probably isn’t suited by the conditions (weight for age) of the race or the distance so it’s easy to see why he is at such big odds. The gelding is also first-up and hasn’t won in six attempts when fresh so look for him to feature in slightly easier company later on in the carnival.
