Canterbury has produced and outstanding card of racing here and we have our eyes on a number of good picks that will hopefully deliver the goods. Our best bet has only won on start but that was on a rain affected track so all the ingredients match up for him to run a bottler here.
Canterbury is racing on a Heavy 8 with the rail out 5m the entire.
Taking a punt on the first starter in SKYANN. The Team Hawkes runner comes into the race with a trial win at Rosehill over 900m when leading throughout, winning by three lengths. That was her first trial for nearly 12 months after running second to Sweet Ava in a jumpout in December last year. Worth a ticket based on her trials.
1st: No8 SKYANN 2nd: No1 River Bird; 3rd: No7 Home Scene; 4th: No2 Antonio
STEALTH SNIPER is our on top pick and go one better than his past two outings. The son of Redoute’s Choice has wound up second to Impetuoso and the talented Napoleon Solo. The colt led for most of the trip at Randwick over 1400m last time but couldn’t repel Napoleon Solo, who has gone on to frank the form by winning in Saturday company. Should push forward from five, can handle wet ground and gets the master Brett Prebble on board. Hard to beat.
1st: No6 STEALTH SNIPER 2nd: No10 Welsh Legend; 3rd: *SCRATCHED* No1 Battle Plane; 4th: No2 Black Sunrise
SOUTHERN LAD (BEST BET) is due for a change of luck and can win this. The John O’Shea-trained runner has finished close up in two runs back from a spell but hasn’t had much go his way in either run. The four-year-old finished seventh to Sweet Deal in Saturday company on Nov 17, however, he was beaten just over 1.5lengths. First-up he was third to Niccobelle which is good form. Drops in class and gets a 3kg claim too.
1st: No1 SOUTHERN LAD 2nd: No4 Pierina; 3rd: No8 Pembroke Castle; 4th: *SCRATCHED* No2 Kopite
This is a great race that is loaded with chances. We don’t mind giving *SCRATCHED* SOPHIELLA another chance after she didn’t have a great deal of luck when fifth on the Kenso behind Ellie’s Encore three weeks ago. Drawn four, Sophiella can settle in the first half of the field and Adam Hyeronimus should be able to issue his challenge approaching the turn. She likes the wet and distance too.
1st: *SCRATCHED* No9 SOPHIELLA 2nd: No5 Connemara; 3rd: No7 Arizona Wildcat; 4th: No2 Can’t Find Snippy
Difficult race to end the program but one of our bets of the evening comes up in the shape of LEGISLATION (NEXT BEST BET). Yes, he’s only won once from seven career starts but that was on a Soft surface and he gets wet conditions here. That win was also against talented filly Fiesta and while he has been unplaced in six runs since, he has gone up against some big names like Sunlight, Written By and Futooh. Warmed up for this with a second to Irithea at the trials on Nov 13, beating home subsequent winner Seasons. Worth the gamble.
1st: No8 LEGISLATION 2nd: No4 Tenorino; 3rd: *SCRATCHED* No1 Bombarding; 4th: No12 Rare Episode
