Canterbury Racing Previews & Tips - Friday 4th January
New Year racing at Canterbury and we are keen on a few runners to line our pockets heading into the weekend.
Nice card of racing for the Friday night gallops at Canterbury Park. We have identified four strong chances but our best of the bunch is more of a value play than anything else. This galloper always runs a good race and didn’t have any luck last time out. Drawn well this time around, you should be backing him eachway all day!
Canterbury is racing on a Soft 6 with the rail out 3m the entire circuit.
Canterbury Race 1 – 6:15PM #theraces Handicap (1250 Metres)
MATOWI is worth a punt in the opener. The maiden event looks suited to this son of Ocean Park who has raced four times for just one of the placing. However, that was against Tarka back in August and that form was franked the start after when it took out the Group 2 Stan Fox. Ran fourth to Nakeeta Jane and Ranier back in September and again, that form was franked throughout the Spring. Has warmed up for this with a quiet trial at Warwick Farm.
1st: No4 MATOWI 2nd: No8 Spiritosa; 3rd: No7 Plenty; 4th: No2 I Am Zain
Canterbury Race 5 - 8:15PM MSC Signs Plate (1200 Metres)
Prepared to give C’EST DAVINICHI another chance after his failure in Saturday metro company last time out. Couldn’t get into the race won by Monsieur Sisu last time at Warwick Farm but go on his two previous wins at this track. Maps to get back in the field but with ‘The Gun’ Brenton Avdulla aboard, we want to give this guy another chance.
1st: No6 C’EST DAVINCHI 2nd: No7 Snitzel Day; 3rd: No1 Dawn Raid; 4th: No3 Chalmers
Canterbury Race 7 - 9:15PM Col Crawford KIA Evening Star (1250 Metres)
HANDFAST (BEST BET) has been extremely unlucky at his two starts since a spell but is drawn well heading into this. The Richard Litt-trained runner was wide throughout last start when seventh to Tell Me in what turned out to be a leader dominated affair on the Kenso on December 21. Prior to that, he flew home from near last at this track to finish third to Samadoubt. Now third-up and with a 1.5kg claim for Sam Weatherley, things look like they can fall into place here.
1st: No1 HANDFAST 2nd: No3 The Pharoah; 3rd: No8 Cascata Rossa; 4th: No10 Sepoy Acheva
Canterbury Race 8 - 9:45PM Australian Turf Club Handicap (1100 Metres)
SYLVIA’S MOTHER is the short way home but jeez she looks a good thing. Comes into this off a brilliant first-up win at Hawkesbury, winning by over four lengths in Class 2 company. Steps up in grade but has to be respected as a winner of two of her only three starts. Drawn three and a small field will suit. Hard to beat.
1st: No5 SYLVIA’S MOTHER 2nd: No1 Alassio; 3rd: No8 Transmitter; 4th: No2 And So It Goes Again
