Monday Racing Tips - 18th February

Some big name trainers are in charge of our horses to follow this afternoon.

Sat, 16 Feb, 12:00 AM

The likes of Michael Costa, Kris lees and Richard Freedman will be carrying our hopes, and wallets, heading into today’s thoroughbred action as we look to kick off the week on a high. Our best of the day was luckless last time out but has drawn far better for this assignment.

Ballina is racing on a Soft 5 with the trail out 1.5m 1000m-400m, true the remainder

Newcastle is racing on a Good 3 with the rail out 3m the entire.

Ballina Race 1 - 2:05PM Tursa CG&E Maiden Plate (1305 Metres)

When Michael Costa brings anything over the border it has to be respected and that is the case with PISTOLERO. The three-year-old has only had the three career starts but has shown enough to be considered a threat here. Is first-up since May last year but did warm up for this with a 1000m trial. The fact Costa is confident the son of High Chaparral can run out a strong 1305 first-up speaks volumes.

1st: No5 PISTOLERO 2nd: No6 Weigela; 3rd: No3 Call Me Ready; 4th: No4 Kidlat

Ballina Race 2 - 2:40PM Northern Star F&M Maiden Plate (1305 Metres)

Expect the Matty Dunn-trained BLING ‘N’ BUBBLES (NEXT BEST) to be very hard to beat in this. The filly chased valiantly last start at this track on Feb 4 but was no match for Beach Baby, ultimately finishing second beaten 3.5 lengths. That was her second run back from a spell so she should be nearing peak fitness now. Barrier seven will see Robbie Fradd push forward in the hope of finding a prominent spot. Worth following.

1st: No5 BLING ‘N’ BUBBLES 2nd: No7 Indibelle; 3rd: No9 Maquina Voladora; 4th: No1 Luv Our Stratum

Ballina Race 3 - 3:15PM 100.9 ZZZFM Class 2 Handicap (Scaled -0.5kgs) (1005 Metres)

This mare produced a very good run first-up and shapes as a good bet here. *SCRATCHED* MY UNICORN (BEST BET) hadn’t raced since July last year when heading to the Sunny Coast on Jan 11. She was luckless throughout, sitting three and four deep the entire race and despite racing on the speed, didn’t shirk her task in finishing just 3.3lengths from the winner. Drawn five, she maps to go forward again and the booking of Ryan Maloney gives us extra confidence.

1st: *SCRATCHED* No7 MY UNICORN 2nd: No3 Old Trieste; 3rd: No2 Usurp; 4th: No4 Little Bit Of Suzy

Newcastle Race 5 - 4:10PM Cessnock Leagues Club Maiden Plate (900 Metres)

LAST ACE is resuming from a spell and looks hard to beat going on his debut effort back in October. On that occasion, the Kris Lees runner sat outside the leader and winner at Port Macquarie when second, beaten five lengths, as an odds-on favourite. Drawn 13 is a negative but the services of Darryl McLellan are a big tick.

1st: No7 LAST ACE 2nd: No9 Our Vera; 3rd: No3 Ah You With Me; 4th: No2 Jack Junior

Newcastle Race 7 - 5:30PM Senpos Point Of Sale Class 1 Handicap (1600 Metres)

Our value pick of the day comes in the shape of ANTONIO’S PRIDE. The Richard Freedman runner will find this slightly easier than his first-up assignment on the Beaumont track where he finished seventh to Stryke Rock. The distance could be a little short of his best but he has shown in the past that he can handle the mile and barrier three means Josh Adams will have him in a prominent spot throughout. Eachway.

1st: No2 ANTONIO’S PRIDE 2nd: No1 Holy Reign; 3rd: No4 Itz Lily; 4th: No5 rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em
