Saturday Racing Previews & Tips - Randwick 13th April
We say farewell to one of the greatest racehorses to grace the turf. Welcome to Day 2 of The Championships!
Day 2 of The Championships is dominated by four Group Ones but we aren’t kidding ourselves – Winx is the star attraction as the champ goes for 33 straight wins to round out her career. Outside of the great mare though, our best bet of the day is a highly promising gelding that has won five straight races and can make it six here.
Randwick is racing on a Soft 5 with the rail 3m the entire.
Randwick Race 1 - 1:25AM Kings Of Sydney Sport Mile (1600 Metres)
AUTOCRATIC could be worth a shot in the opener. The Team Snowden colt was heavily backed from double figures last start in the Baillieu behind Bellevue Hill and worked to the line nicely when a closing fourth. Never looked likely in a leader dominated race last time but the extra 200m should suit.
1st: No3 AUTOCRATIC 2nd: No1 Amercement; 3rd: No8 Significance; 4th: No4 Power Scheme
Randwick Race 2 - 12:05PM The Agency South Pacific Classic (1400 Metres)
Going for WILD PLANET considering he isn’t badly weighted against a few of his main rivals. The son of Animal Kingdom has gone around in Listed and Group company and proven to be very competitive and the fact he is only carrying 54.5kgs is a bonus. Drops 3.5kg on his last outing when attempting to lead throughout in the Darby Munro on March 23 when grabbed late by Krone. Likely to go forward again and prove hard to toss again. Has trialled nicely in preparation for this.
1st: No4 WILD PLANET 2nd: No12 Millard Reaction; 3rd: No5 Krone; 4th: No10 Fasika
Randwick Race 3 - 12:40PM Polytrack Provincial Championships Final (1400 Metres)
ARCHEDEMUS (BEST BET) is the one to beat in the Prov Championship Final. A winner of five from seven career outings, the gelding has drawn perfectly in four and should be going forward to take up a spot either in front or close enough to the speed. Toughed it out to win his qualifier and led throughout two starts back at Rosehill over Star Of The Seas which has franked the form by winning twice since. Good horse in the making. Gwenda Markwell’s stable is on a high after winning the Derby last week – can she make it another feature here?
1st: No2 ARCHEDEMUS 2nd: No4 Bobbing; 3rd: No6 Safado; 4th: No3 Spring Charlie
Randwick Race 4 - 1:15PM Camera House Percy Sykes Stakes (1200 Metres)
Can’t go past KIAMICHI to claim another big win. The Godolphin runner is backing up after last week’s Sires’ where she ran third to stablemate Microphone after leading. Drops back to 1200m for this and the seven-day back-up won’t be an issue as she did that when doing the Magic Night – Golden Slipper double. Leads again from gate five and will be very hard to run down.
1st: No1 KIAMICHI 2nd: No3 Pin Sec; 3rd: No5 Cheer Leader; 4th: No4 Flit
Randwick Race 5 - 1:50PM Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200 Metres)
Prepared to give CLASSIQUE LEGEND another chance at a better price. The gelding went around as a hot favourite last time out in the Darby Munro only to be stuck three-wide on the speed throughout. His narrow third was outstanding! Prior to that, he won his first two starts in sensational fashion albeit in easier company. We are getting a much better price this time around and he is a horse on the way up. Steps up in grade but we think he has something special.1st: No7 CLASSIQUE LEGEND 2nd: No3 Lean Mean Machine; 3rd: No10 Trope; 4th: No2 Encryption
Randwick Race 6 - 2:25PM Heineken 3 Australian Oaks (2400 Metres)
VERRY ELLEEGANT only has to race kindly to win. Chris Waller seems to have found the key to the daughter of Zed with two very impressive wins of late including the Group One Vinery Stud last start. She does have a history of pulling though so if he does that your tickets will be confetti. We are banking on her settling back midfield and travelling nicely and if she does that, it will be Waller and McDonald celebrating another Group One.
1st: No1 VERRY ELLEEGANT 2nd: No3 Frankely Awesome; 3rd: No5 Maracaibo; 4th: No6 Aliferous
Randwick Race 7 - 3:05PM Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000 Metres)
Well, we get to say farewell to a legend. WINX should be going out on a winning note as she chases her 33rd straight victory. She is too good, too fast and too strong for this field and she has beaten most of these previously and the ones she hasn’t really haven’t shown enough to suggest they will upset the apple cart. Hugh Bowman will just drop her out the back from nine and time his run perfectly on her, as he always has, as the pair sweep to a 25th Group One.
1st: No7 WINX 2nd: No2 Hartnell; 3rd: No1 Happy Clapper; 4th: No5 Kluger
Randwick Race 8 - 3:50PM Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200 Metres)
Going wide in the Sydney Cup with SOUND which is over $20 across most corporates. The Mike Moroney runner was seen doing his best work late when fourth to Avilius (beaten 6 lengths) in the Tancred on a Heavy surface. He gets far better going this time around which suits him plus the distance won't be a concern. The Tancred was easily his best effort in four Australian starts. Pushed Best Solution all the way in a Germany Group One and that horse came out two months later and won the Caulfield Cup. Gets back in the run but is worth a shot at the stumps.
1st: No2 SOUND 2nd: No11 Midterm; 3rd No10 Dubhe; 4th: No15 Rondinella
Randwick Race 9 - 4:30PM Coolmore Legacy Stakes (1600 Metres)
Forget ALIZEE went around in the Doncaster last week. The Godolphin mare was out of the back and was carrying a big weight and on top of that, the race was run to suit those up front, so essentially she had no hope. Prior to that was third in the All-Star Mile and won her first two runs back this preparation. Loves Randwick, won this race last year and can win again. Will get back but watch for her steaming home late.
1st: No1 ALIZEE 2nd: No4 Dixie Blossoms; 3rd: No2 Prompt Response; 4th: No13 Kenedna
Randwick Race 10 - 5:10PM TAB Sapphire Stakes (1200 Metres)
If ever a horse deserved a win it is SPRIGHT (NEXT BEST BET). The Garry Frazer-trained mare has finished a narrow second twice at her past two starts behind Winter Bride and Sunlight, the latter in the Group One William Reid. Usually ends up in the second half of the field but hopefully, from gate three, Jason Collett can have her a little closer. Possesses a big finish and can match up to any of these on her day.
1st: No5 SPRIGHT 2nd: No9 Ellicazoom; 3rd: No3 I Am Excited; 4th: No2 White Moss
