Wednesday Canterbury Racing Previews & Tips - 19th June
We are playing on a Heavy surface at Canterbury today so make sure you follow those mudlarks.
We return to Canterbury for a solid Wednesday meeting and we have identified a few serious chances that will prove hard to beat. Our top selection has won her first two starts to date and is trained by the astute Mark Newnham. Looks above average and is deserving of a shot in town.
Canterbury is racing on a Heavy 9 with the rail True.
Canterbury Race 1 - 12:50PM ANZ Bloodstock News Plate (1100 Metres)
Tough race to start the program but banking on EXCEED THE STARS to take advantage of the good gate and prove hard to run down over the 1100m dash. Has had two trials leading into his return and expected to be in the finish. Has handled Soft going before but first go on the Heavy. Keep safe.
1st: No1 EXCEED THE STARS 2nd: No4 Mercury 3rd: No2 Frosty Rocks 4th: No7 Papal Warrior
Canterbury Race 2 - 1:25PM Australian Turf Club Plate (1100 Metres)
AQUITAINE was a touch unlucky not to salute on debut on this track a fortnight ago when narrowly beaten by Blazing Miss. Will strip fitter second-up and despite the awkward draw, we expect this Godolphin filly to prove hard to beat. Was heavily backed late last time out so keep an eye on the market here. Barrier slight concern but she has some talent.
1st: No1 AQUITAINE 2nd: No5 Egyptian Missile; 3rd: No7 Enfleurage 4th: No12 Mini Boom
Canterbury Race 3 - 2:00PM Star Turn @ Vinery Handicap (1900 Metres)
MILUNKA is a lightly raced All Too Hard filly out of the astute Chris Waller stable that’s perfectly placed to make it consecutive victories after saluting on this track a fortnight back. Finished off strong when defeating Discombe by a length over the 1550m and the step up to the 1900m won’t be an issue for the galloper. Has the form.
1st: No11 MILUNKA 2nd: No1 Matowi; 3rd: No4 Guise 4th: No6 Flying Pierro
Canterbury Race 4 - 2:35PM Ranvet Salkavite Handicap (1900 Metres)
Ultra-consistent mare SONAREE is the one they all need to beat. Has finished no worse than second at her past five starts, winning two on the way, and this looks a perfect race for her to bounce back into the winners circle after going down by 1.3 lengths to the smart Be Mindful. Ticks all the boxes.
1st: No1 SONAREE 2nd: No7 Austria; 3rd: No10 Gypsy Miss 4th: No4 Bringagem
Canterbury Race 5 - 3:10PM TAB Rewards Handicap (1250 Metres)
AIM FOR PERFECTION (BEST BET) has won her two starts to date and despite the step up in grade, we expect her to keep her unbeaten tag alive in her first attempt in town. Won by two lengths on debut at Newcastle a month back before proving too smart for her rivals on the same course and distance (1200m) when winning by 1.5 lengths. Looks to have a bright future and we expect her to make it three from three here today. Top pick and out of the flying Mark Newnham stable.
1st: No4 AIM FOR PERFECTION 2nd: No5 Dame Kiri 3rd: No1 Echo Gem; 4th: No2 Franquare
Canterbury Race 6 - 3:45PM Ribchester @ Darley Handicap (1200 Metres)
EMBRACER will lead from the good gate and take a power of beating today. Finished less than a length behind Jack’s Bar at Warwick Farm last start but did win with authority the previous start and going on that effort we expect this Waterhouse/Bott-trained colt to prove hard to run down. Will be fit and ready to fire. Big watch.
1st: No5 EMBRACER 2nd: *SCRATCHED* No6 Virgilio; 3rd: *SCRATCHED* No1 Inanup; 4th: No3 Above and Beyond
Canterbury Race 7 - 4:20PM Canterbury League Club Handicap (1550 Metres)
PLENTY just finished out of the placings at Randwick (Kensington) last start when leading for most of the trip only to be nabbed in the final few strides. Has drawn well so expect B Shinn to take this Chris Waller-trained gelding to the front and prove hard to run down. Hard to toss.
1st: No8 PLENTY 2nd: No7 Musume; 3rd: No10 Weekend Affair 4th: No1 Kurnel Jaxon
