Sunday Racing Tips - 4th August
Jumps action heads to Sandown while Muswellbrook’s card isn’t tardy either.
Our expert has done the form and come up with four outstanding chances at Sandown while the Cup at Muswellbrook has one going around at the $10* quote which is appealing. Our best of the day is smart by name and smart by nature. Was brilliant winning at Caulfield two starts back and is likely to be first past the post here.
Sandown is racing on a Soft 6 with the rail true the entire circuit.
Muswellbrook is racing on a Soft 5 with the rail in the true.
Sandown Race 1 - 11:05AM Crisp Steeplechase (4200 Metres)
Veteran hurdler WELLS has to carry 70kgs but should still prove too good at the finish. The 12-year-old carried the same weight when successful at Pakenham last start in the Mosstrooper Steeplechase and with three recent runs under his belt he will be primed for this. Has won twice and placed a further two times on the circuit. Hard to beat.
1st: No1 WELLS 2nd: No3 Lucques; 3rd: No5 Slowpoke Rodriguez; 4th: No2 Bit Of A Lad
Sandown Race 6 - 2:25PM Grand National Hurdle (4200 Metres)
KILLARNEY KID (NEXT BEST BET) loomed to win at Pakenham last time out against most of his rivals here, however, he stumbled on the second last jump and then failed to finish. He started a hot $2.05 fav that day. Prior to that he was ultra impressive in beating Euroman by five lengths at Warrnambool. Enjoys all conditions, is proven over the jumps and has the Patty Payne / Steve Pateman polish. Go again!
1st: No1 KILLARNEY KID 2nd: No3 Gobstopper; 3rd: No5 Comics; 4th: No2 Tallyho Twinkletoe
Muswellbrook Race 6 - 4:00PM Bengalla Mining Company Bengalla Cup (1200 Metres)
Consistent gelding MOST EXALTED is our tip for the feature of the day from Muswellbrook. The Mack Griffith-trained runner hasn’t been seen at the races since finishing 11th of 12 in the Quirindi Cup back in February. Warmed up for this with a second to Sharpe Hussler at the Scone trials on July 22. Most Exalted is a first-up specialist and has only missed a place once in six starts at this stage of a preparation. Gets back in the field so barrier 11 not a major concern but if there is speed on then he definitely comes into play.
1st: No3 MOST EXALTED 2nd: No2 Sugar Dance; 3rd: No13 Weather Channel; 4th: No8 Cascata Rossa
Sandown Race 9 - 4:15PM Blue Star Print Handicap (1400 Metres)
Talented gelding SMART ELISSIM (BEST BET) appears to have come back to racing in great form and that is good enough reason to back him here. He was an impressive first-up winner at Caulfield on June 29 when Luke Nolen produced a pearler of a ride, knocking off Twilight Run with that horse franking the form by winning next start. Smart Elissim then finished a narrow second after attempting to lead throughout at the same track three weeks back. Gets some weight relief thanks to Lachie King’s claim and from gate five will be a prominent spot throughout. Classy.
1st: No3 SMART ELISSIM 2nd: No2 Groundbreak; 3rd: No4 Shot Of Irish; 4th: No1 Barthelona
Sandown Race 10 - 4:50PM The Big Screen Company Handicap (1200 Metres)
We tipped GIBBON at Flemington last time out but he didn’t have a great deal of luck in the race won by Prezado. Go on his effort on the Hillside track two starts back when second to Aluf after coming from the rear. Before that was also close up at Flemington. Drawn one and gets the 3kgs off his back thanks to Teo Nugent, he is worth an eachway investment.
1st: No3 GIBBON 2nd: No9 La Tigeresa; 3rd: No2 Well Sprung; 4th: No4 Mr Tipla
