Saturday Racing Previews & Tips - Moonee Valley 24th August
Our expert is fairly confident of doing the business nice and early at The Valley.
Moonee Valley hosts a very strong nine-race card where more horses being aimed for the spring will be resuming from spells. Our best bet of the day comes about nice and early. This Tasmanian-trained galloper by Scott Brunton has been flying since returning from a break and Ben Melham retains the ride.
Moonee Valley is racing on a Soft 5 with the rail out 4m the entire circuit.
Moonee Valley Race 1 - 12:20PM Paramount Liquor Handicap (1600 Metres)
SHOT OF IRISH (BEST BET) caught the eye last week when flashing home for third behind Age Of Chivalry and there is definitely no horse in this race that is as good as that. Goes up an extra 200m which looks ideal but also goes up 3kgs. Knocked off Smart Elissim two runs back. On top for us.
1st: No1 SHOT OF IRISH 2nd: No4 Laure Me In; 3rd: No2 I Boogi; No5 Wenner
Moonee Valley Race 2 - 12:55PM Sweeney Estate Agents Handicap (2500 Metres)
Like the chances of *SCRATCHED* THE STATESMAN (NEXT BEST BET) who meets the fav More Than Ever 3kgs better than their last meeting. Will push forward from gate 10 so don’t worry about the wide gate as Michael Poy will look to posse up close to the speed. Is fit, has run well here previously and the Soft track suits. Include.
1st: *SCRATCHED* No1 THE STATESMAN 2nd: *SCRATCHED* No2 More Than Ever; 3rd: No11 Dabiyr; 4th: *SCRATCHED* No3 Bling Dynasty
Moonee Valley Race 3 - 1:30PM Palentino – Outstanding 1st Crop Yearlings Plate (1200 Metres)
TARAAYEF has been ultra-impressive in winning her past two and is our on top tip here. Admittedly was aided by a great ride both times by Luke Nolen but she still had to get the job done. Looped them last time out here over 1000m before hitting the line hard. Extra 200m suits. Will get back from 10 and be finishing off hard with the rail out probably playing to her advantage.
1st: No3 TARAAYEF 2nd: No1 La Tene; 3rd: No9 Andrassy Avenue; 4th: No5 Lady Lupino
Moonee Valley Race 4 - 2:05PM Dr Sheahan Plate (1200 Metres)
STREET ICON could benefit from Teo Nugent’s 2kg claim and is one to follow. Had to come really wide last time out when well supported but go on her effort two runs back when a narrow second to Gododdin. Carries just 52kgs and comes out of the Maher & Eustace barn. Respect.
1st: No10 STREET ICON 2nd: No3 Fragonard; 3rd: No7 Algadon Miss; 4th: No2 Miss Norway
Moonee Valley Race 5 - 2:45PM Seppelt Wines Carlyon Stakes (1000 Metres)
ASSERTIVE APPROACH can repay his followers by taking out the Listed feature. The Team Hawkes runner led and ran quick time out in front at Flemington but couldn’t hold off The Inevitable which nailed it on the line. Was heavily tried that day. Small field and barrier four plays to his advantage here. Could lead and be hard to catch.
1st: No3 ASSERTIVE APPROACH 2nd: No5 Spirit Of Valor; 3rd: No2 Bons Away; 4th: No4 Ashlor
Moonee Valley Race 6 - 3:25PM Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap (1519 Metres)
Prepared to give NEW UNIVERSE another go who was ultra-impressive in winning here two starts back. Trainer Chris Waller has decided to back the gelding up quickly following his sixth at Caulfield last Saturday when he didn’t have a great deal go right. Likely to go back from 10 but will be running on.
1st: No6 NEW UNIVERSE 2nd: *SCRATCHED* No3 Vinland; 3rd: No7 Romancer; 4th: *SCRATCHED* No4 Kemono
Moonee Valley Race 8 - 4:45PM Ranvet Handicap (1200 Metres)
Taking the punt on TERBIUM who has won four of five starts. Hasn’t been seen since May when contesting the Group Two Euclase at Morphettville which was his only defeat. Isn’t drawn well (12) but will probably settle midfield for John Allen. The Phillip Stokes runner went from maiden to Group Three winner in the space of two months and knocked off the highly-rated Zousain in the Zeditave. Classy customer who beat Grey Shadow (a winner since) in a trial recently.
1st: No8 TERBIUM 2nd: No11 Tavisan; 3rd: No9 Usain Bowler; 4th: No6 Man From Uncle
Moonee Valley Race 9 - 5:20PM MSC Signs Handicap (2040 Metres)
HARRISON could spring a surprise fresh in the final event. The Liam Howley-trained runner went around in some to races last prep and started $6 in The Bart Cummings but ultimately finished at the rear. Went pretty good fresh last time in over the mile but the 2040m suits better. Likes to go forward and barrier two is a big plus.
1st: No5 HARRISON 2nd: No6 Inverloch; 3rd: No13 Tavirun; 4th: No12 Charossa
Moonee Valley Race 7 - 4:05PM McMahon’s Dairy McKenzie Stakes (1200 Metres)
HIGHTAIL is a quality youngster resuming from a break and is worth a ticket. Ran third in the Magic Millions behind Exhilarates and that is sensational form with that horse taking out the Quezette last week in brilliant fashion. Has won first-up in the past and has only missed a place once in seven starts. Respect.
1st: No1 HIGHTAIL 2nd: No3 Condo’s Express; 3rd No8 Exeter; 4th: No4 Independent Road
