2019 Spring Champion Stakes Race Preview & Betting Tips
Noted frontrunner the one to catch in Saturday’s Group One.
Surprise, surprise – we have a Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott runner as a noted leader in this! Just Thinkin’ (3) should find the top while Rhaegar (5) led last time out but those tactics backfired so maybe they’ll ride him a little more conservative. Put your house on the fact Castelvecchio (1) will be back last while Shadow Hero (2) gets the chance to be midfield at worst from the better draw.
The Key Runners:
2. Shadow Hero (2) – $1.70F*
J: J. Parr (56.5kg) T: M. Newnham
Unfortunately, we aren’t going to get a price for this guy but something is better than nothing. Showed a tremendous turn of foot to take out the Gloaming over 1800m and the extra distance definitely won’t be a concern. Drawn perfectly in two and should be finishing right over the top of them once again.
THE EACH-WAY TIP
3. Just Thinkin’ (10) – $8*
J: T. Clark (kg) T: G. Waterhouse & A. Bott
Is a natural go-forward horse so is likely to push forward from gate 10. Led all the way in a tough effort to win the Dulcify two starts back and then did all the work in a fast run Gloaming Stakes when fourth. Will have to produce something special to turn the tables on Shadow Hero but if he gets the front he will definitely take catching.
9. Persan (3) – $51*
J: G. Schofield (56.5kg) T: D. Payne
This guy was the one rattling home in the Gloaming when fifth to Shadow Hero. Really seemed to appreciate the step up in distance that day so the extra 200m here may really be up his alley. Drawn three and could be closer to the speed than he has been. Not the worst at the big odds.
Don’t mind going big on the favourite here so we’ll go ‘all in’ on the odds-on pop. Outside of that, if you are considering the quinella then Castelvecchio ($4.80*) is the natural second pick while trifecta and First 4 players can throw in our each-way and roughie tips for value.
- • 100% of the bank on Shadow Hero to win ($1.70F*)
