Melbourne Cup Betting Update: Punters relentlessly backing Cup favourite
One horse certainly caught the eye of punters over the weekend
There has been a flourish of bets on the Melbourne Cup following the weekend's racing action, with one Randwick winner, in particular, catching the eye of the Australian public. Chris Waller’s, Finche won the tightly contested The Agency Real Estate Kingston Town Stakes, a win which shot him into favouritism for the Cup.
Finche finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup last year, and now looks set to compete in the $8 million handicap once more. The son of Frankel toughed it out at Randwick to win at $10, finishing a neck clear of Stampede.
The win forced bookmakers to cut odds on the Cup success, and Finche is now the $15 favourite for November's big race. It wasn’t just the corporates reacting to the win, punters were quick to back the six-year-old in their droves. Since the race, a massive 39% of bets have been on Finche winning the Melbourne Cup.
The $26 shot, Raymond Tusk, has been the second most backed in the market during the same period.
If you look a bit further down the betting, there’s a runner whose price-tag really stands out. The fourth most backed horse in the market since Saturday has been Dashing Willoughby, who can still be backed at a massive $151. The four-year-old was last seen finishing a long way behind Logician over in England (Doncaster).
