The 2018 NFL Draft is over and as usual, there were plenty of surprises. We take a look at the teams that were the biggest winners from this year’s draft.
It’s easy to put the team with the number 1 overall pick as one of the winners of the draft but when you have not only the 1st pick but also the 4th pick…and not only that, you have five picks in the first three rounds, it’s extremely hard not to come out looking like a big winner. And that’s certainly true for the Cleveland Browns who finally after years and years might have their long-term quarterback after drafting Baker Mayfield from Oklahoma first overall. Even if all their other picks turn out to be duds, if Mayfield turns into a decent quarterback, that’d be a major win for the Browns who have lacked a decent quarterback for over two decades now.
With the Browns missing pieces looking very much filled, they may be a good chance to get straight back into the playoffs next season!
In a case of the rich getting richer, the New England Patriots had an outstanding draft. Most expected the Patriots to use their first round pick to find a successor to the arguably all-time greatest QB Tom Brady who turns 41 this year. Instead, they went in a different direction, drafting around Brady by improving their protection of him and giving him a very promising and versatile (just how the Patriots like it) running back in Sony Michel. By filling these key holes, it’s hard to see them not repeating or even surpassing last year’s season which ended in a heartbreaking loss to Philadelphia in the Superbowl.
The Patriots are favourites to win the Superbowl (again) but there's still some reasonable value if you're confident they can do it.
Everyone expected the Green Bay Packers to focus on defense in this draft, so it was not at all surprising when they drafted two defensive backs with their first two picks. The part that was surprising was the calibre of defensive back they were able to get. They moved down a few picks in the first round after a trade with New Orleans but were still able to get the man they wanted. As well as this, they were lucky to snag another excellent defensive back in the 2nd round who wasn’t expected to fall that far in the draft. If these picks can amount to anything, it would go a long way in supporting top QB Aaron Rodgers to get back into the playoffs.
With superstar QB Aaron Rodgers back and some promising young defensive players, the Packers could be a great chance to win the Superbowl.
The Arizona Cardinals traded up to pick Josh Rosen and fill their quarterback position, which they desperately needed and for a price which seems well worth it. He could be their long-term option as they look to not fall behind in the NFC West which has all of a sudden become the most competitive in the league. With their top running back David Johnson returning from a season-long injury last year, the Rosen-Johnson combination has the potential to be a top duo.
It might be a few years before the Cardinals get back to winning ways, especially friom their division, but if you think Rosen is the piece they need to go back to being one of the top sides in the NFL like they were a couple of seasons ago, you can get a great price for them to win their division.
