Canterbury fans will be hoping for a massive turnaround when they host Brisbane in Thursday Night Football.

Fresh off a 36-nil hiding at the hands of the Sea Eagles last week, Canterbury have all the motivation in the world to put in a big performance here because if they don’t then this scoreline could turn out to be a hell of a lot worse.

They face a Brisbane outfit who will have their confidence lifted following a narrow win over the Canberra Raiders last Friday, securing a 13-12 win thanks to a late Jordan Kahu field goal.

A NEW LOW

The Bulldogs effort against Manly last week was nothing short of disgraceful.

They lacked steel, toughness and any sort of penetration when they had the chance to attack. In short, it was their worst performance under coach Des Hasler in five years.

Plenty of rumours have been floating around during the week that Hasler could be sacked, however, the two-time premiership-winning coach has to be given the benefit of the doubt to some degree. After all, he isn’t the one missing tackles out of the field.

Highlighting just how bad they were, CANTERBURY completed just 69 percent of their sets and compounded that stat with 12 errors while being completely overrun by the Manly side who ran for nearly 600 metres more than they did.

THE REAL DEAL

BRISBANE has arguably had the hardest run of any team in the opening month but has come through it with a 2-2 record.

They have played the top four from last season and beaten the premiers (Cronulla) and the Raiders while dropping heartbreakers against the Storm and Cowboys.

Last week’s victory against the Raiders was important because there was beginning to be some doubt as to whether they could close out the tight games.

Remember, even in defeat, Brisbane’s averaging losing margin in 2017 is just 1.5 points!

THE HISTORY

The advantage definitely rests with Brisbane in this one.

Punters will take note in the fact the Broncos have won five of the past seven overall but the record flips when it comes to games at ANZ Stadium.

Canterbury has dominated the fixture at ANZ by winning six of the past nine, however, did drop the last game 30-10 back in Round 19 of last year.

Historically these games don’t become a tryfest so maybe the Under 35.5 Points (@1.91 with Bet365) could be worth having a few dollars on.

THE VERDICT

Hasler and the Bulldogs definitely have their work cut out.

After being held to nil last week, they lose playmaker Moses Mbye through suspension and have thrown in Matt Frawley in his place. A rookie half won’t give punters a great deal of confidence going up against one of the competition’s best defences who only conceded an average of 16.25 points (3rd in the NRL).

Brisbane has looked pretty solid against the best teams in the competition and shouldn’t be overly concerned with what the Bulldogs throw at them.

Naturally you can expect to see some bounce back from the Dogs because let’s be honest, no one likes to get smashed. Will it be enough for them to find some attacking mojo and score an upset? We highly doubt it.
