Desperate times call for desperate measures and that will be the case for both sides when the second game of Super Saturday kicks off.

One of the pre-season favourites for the competition, Canberra are 1-3 but have been narrowly beaten in two of those losses including last week’s one-point defeat to Brisbane.

Parramatta aren’t in much better shape at 2-2, however, they have been terrible over the past fortnight and were never in the hunt against Cronulla last week before losing 20-6.

CANBERRA have played well for the most part in 2017 without really reaping any rewards.

Aside from their thrashing at the hands of the premiers a few weeks back, Canberra has played up to its potential which was never more evident than their 40-point hiding of the Tigers a fortnight ago.

A Golden Point defeat to the Cowboys in Round 1, coupled with their effort against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium last week, has made their record looks worse than what it is. Had it been for some fortune, along with discipline, those results could have easily gone their way.

Parramatta began the season strongly but have compounded lately.

After blowing a 12-point lead against the Gold Coast in Round 3, Parramatta were meant to benefit from the return of playmaker Corey Norman last week.

Coach Brad Arthur would have been bitterly disappointed with their efforts against the Sharks as they made 15 errors, 30 missed tackles and completed only 68 percent of their sets. On top of that, you cannot win a game of rugby league these days by conceding 10 penalties.

This makes good reading for Raiders fans with three of the past four results going their way.

Delve into matches played against the Eels solely at GIO Stadium and on historical stats alone you would think the Raiders are a shoe-in. Ricky Stuart’s men have won 10 of the past 12 clashes at the venue with the last Eels victory in the nation’s capital being back in 2006.

Look for the Raiders to bounce back to winning form in this.

Their efforts, although mostly in defeat, have been good enough to take this out especially when you consider the quality of competition they have faced so far in 2017.

Parramatta need to get back to the sort of form that saw them put 34 points on the Dragons back in Round 2. Better handling, better discipline and better last-play choices will keep them in this contest and if they can do that they are definitely a chance.

As punters, however, you have to play what’s in front of you and on what we have seen so far the Green Machine look the better bet in this.

JARROD CROKER – the Raiders captain is on 99 career tries
